40M HF VARA
8
I have had HF VARA set up on my computer using my Kenwood TS-850S and a SignaLink for the past year and a half. It is my goto digital mode and I use in multiple times a week. In fact, I used it on Monday to send my digital check-ins to the various ARES nets I inhabit each week - - with no problems. I always us the same gateway (K5RAV) on 7102 Mhz. I receive that signal usually about S-8 or higher, and it usually picks me up after the first or second poll. But today, I tried to send some Winlink messages and K5RAV (or my station) seemed to be acting strange. On the TS-850, I can hear both sides of the "digital conversation" and I have become accustomed to how it sounds as it moves through the connection, sending, receiving, etc.. K5RAV picked me up immediately after the first poll, but then we went into a cycle where it would poll, my radio would answer, it would poll, my radio would answer, etc., and after about 10 of these cycles I got a QRT, both stations identified, and no traffic passed. I can only guess that I inadvertently changed something in the settings, so I went back through the set-up menus, but I could find nothing that deviated from the original configuration. I will admit that I am definitely a "user" of this technology and I have no idea what to check next. I have tried 4 or 5 other times to connect to K5RAV with no luck, and I have been working my way through other 40M gateways to try, but haven't gotten into one yet. I ended up sending my traffic on VARA FM. The VARA Log file from one of the attempts looks like this: 2024-11-13 16:50:21 Connecting to K5RAV... 1/15 2024-11-13 16:50:30 Connected to K5RAV VARA HF v4.8.7 2024-11-13 16:52:00 QRT Received 2024-11-13 16:52:06 Disconnected TX: 0 Bytes (Max: 0 bps) RX: 0 Bytes (Max: 0 bps) Session Time: 01:36 You can see that there is a 1.5 minute period between the connection and the QRT Received where there is just a back and forth handshake of some kind but no traffic getting sent in either direction. Can anyone suggest some guidance I can use? Thanks.

VARA HF signal to noise ratio issues
4
I'm having a problem with the SNR. The SNR is always in the Red, typically -19db or so. When I monitor the signal, it is very strong so I'm not sure why this continues to be an issue. I'm running an FT-819 with a Signalink. I've tried adjusting the TX and RX on the signalink but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas why I can't get the SNR to improve? Thanks in advance.

FM Deviation Calibration with TinySA Ultra

I have to calibrate the Wide VaraFM on a Icom 208H mobile VHF transceiver and thought I would try it with a modestly inexpensive TinySA Ultra. I asked about this procedure in the TinySA forum. My question is, can I just use VaraFM modem SW to modulate the carrier? Just use the tune function alone or do I need another form of modulation to the carrier? I will be using a DRA-50 soundcard. Am I correct in my thinking? Also, while viewing the carrier and adjust to minimum carrier? I'm hoping to just use the external antenna on the TinySA Ultra and just transmit into a dummy load on lowest power (5 watts). I'm hoping to pickup the close signal for the transceiver. Any thoughts on this setup and procedure? Thanks, Todd AL7PX

Encryption

I have installed VARAHF, VARA CHAT and Winlink on a Dell 7020 running Windows 11. For some reason I do not have the encryption option showing up. I am using my CFARS callsign and not the ham callsign. It is almost the identical system to my installation on my Dell 3020 which works perfect. VARAHF v4.8.9 and Vara Chat v1.4.1 running on both systems. I have completely removed and reinstalled both VARAHF and VARA Chat to no avail. As well as copying the complete VARA directory from one system to the other but still no encryption. Any thoughts on what to try next? -- Darcy VE6DDD

Trimode closing
I believe you are referring to RMS Trimode. VARA itself doesn't have a scheduler to close. I would look deeply in the settings for RMS Trimode and see if there is a schedule to close. The other thing to do would be to look in the Windows Event Viewer at the time you believe the close is happening. There could be a fault recorded and that would give you a hint or guide as to what is happening. Doug / N3JXB

Does anyone here have an IC-9700 working at full rate with VARA Wide using a Masters Communications DRA-series sound card? If so, which DRA are you using?

Digirig Mobile bandwidth

#VARAFM
Have you seen VARA FM Wide pass data through a Digirig Mobile at wide speeds? I mean speeds greater than 14,000 bits/second, which are only supported by the wide modes of VARA FM. The VARA display might look like this ( https://www.winlink.org/sites/default/files/oe8xyr_vara_fm_v4.1.2.jpg ). VARA FM speeds are listed here ( https://www.winlink.org/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/screenshot_2020-11-27_152223.jpg?itok=kNw-NoHj ). If you¡¯ve seen this, please tell us about the radio, antenna, computer and software versions you used. I¡¯m not sure a Digirig Mobile has enough audio bandwidth to do this. Demonstration of such a high data rate would be evidence that it does. I¡¯m not equipped to test it.

VARA v4.8.9

Since I installed VARA v4.8.9, it has worked on all HF bands except for 20 meters. Whenever an attempt to transmit is made, the following occurs: My iCOM IC-7300 transmits. I hear the USB disconnect and connect system sound. When using WSJT-X I get the message: Error in Sound Input - AN error opening the audio device has occurred. Tuning function
3
I have an MFJ-1786 loop antenna. Every time I change bands, and sometimes frequencies as well, I have to retune. However, VARA does not offer this function of transmitting a low power signal for tuning purposes. WJST-X has a tuning button on the user interface for this purpose. With this loop antenna tuning is a challenge, though it stays put after achieving low SWR. How do people do this with VARA? 73, K1CPR Juan

Empty Carrier
12
I'm having a strange problem running varaFM. The radio is connected and Vara is receiving transmissions. However, when it transmits, the radio keys up, but it is just an 'empty carrier' there is no noises or sounds coming across? Any ideas what I have wrong on this setup?

Digirig Lite bandwidth

Have you seen VARA FM Wide pass data through a Digirig Lite at wide speeds? I mean speeds greater than 14 Kbits/second, which are only supported by the wide modes of VARA FM. If you¡¯ve seen this, please tell us about the radio, antenna, computer and software versions you used. I've heard a Digirig Mobile has enough audio bandwidth to do this. But I haven't heard about a Digirig Lite. I¡¯m not equipped to test it.

Computers vs VARA
22
I am a little late to this discusssion on computers vs VARA, but I have had no problem whatever using any computer I wish to use, including an HP laptop, with VARA and my DRA modem. But I am using Win 10 wiith all of those. I refuse to use Win11 at this point. When I was an IT guru at the University of Idaho, I had to insist that none of those computers I supported could switch to the latest MicroSoft operating system until after 1 year of getting the bugs out of it. I DO know that a good friend just bought a new laptop from a local store here in Moscow, Idaho which came with Win 11 installed and we had one heck of a time making it work with any digital software or interface!!! The problem, in our case, wasn't the computer, it was BIG TIME, with Win 11. Win11 does some really strange things with the sound system. The last thing we had to do to make it work was to reverse the two RX TX jumper wires in the interface because Win11 insisted that our "sending" data was actually "receiving" data, and vice versa. Reversing the two wires in the interfaces fixed the problem, but it was NOT intuitive. Ken W7EKB -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

VARA FM setup (Run as Administrator).exe crashes immediately upon launch
4
#install
I downloaded VARA FM v4.3.8 setup.zip from winlink.org. I extracted the zip file and attempted, several times, to run VARA FM setup (Run as Administrator).exe, right clicking and, of course, selecting Run as Administrator. I momentarily see an hourglass, which then disappears. Followed by ... nothing. The downloaded zip checks out as ok. I am running Windows 11 with the most recent updates, on an AMD x86-64 processor. I have no anti-virus software installed other than what comes with Windows. Windows Security's Protection history shows nothing in the history, and it says ¡°The settings to block potentially unwanted apps are turned off. Your device may be vulnerable.¡± (Good!) Anyone know what's going on here? (I asked the author, Jose, via email and he suggested that I ask here.)

VARA HF Freezes
7
Hi, A wierd one. Running VARA HF standalone. Radio is ic718. Signalink USB connection that works for WSJT. Signalink USB black transformer. The jumper board is SLMOD8RI. No jumpers activated (j4, nor 2 on the jumper board). SLCAB8R cable is used (8pin mic connector). When I start up a VARA modem, and connect the VARA Input to Sound Card Recording the VARA waterfall shows movement. When I connect VARA Device Output to the SoundCard Playback the VARA HF waterfall freezes. If I disconnect the SL rj45 and the audio in leaving only the USB connector I get the same result. I came here since the SL works for FT8 just fine. Any thoughts? -- 73, Rory Griffin W4RJG

Question About Congestion
13
Hello all, I'm wondering if someone can point me to any documentation on how VARA deals with traffic congestion. For example in the old shared wired network days we had CSMA/CD - And upon a collision all transmitting stations would start a random counter and then restart their sequence. How does VARA handle this type of thing? Sorry, I'm a newbie to wireless digital modes and I'm very curious. Again, please feel free to point me to any good documentation on the topic. -C

Status of the Project
5
Hello all, Honestly, this may be taken the wrong way and I just want to say up-front I'm NOT looking to cause any trouble here. I assume I'm just missing some obvious things and that is why I'm asking! I know VARA is very popular and widely used, but I can't seem to find a 'home page' for the project. Support is hosted here on groups.io, on the only 'official' looking website I can find the last post is from like 13 years ago, and even the purchase screen is a 3rd party payment processor. I'm surely missing something but where is the homepage, where is the official documentation? Additionally, I'm trying to find the terms and conditions of the license agreement. For example, if I purchase a license, how many machines can I use with that license? How many call signs... etc? I think you guys get the idea of my question here. Again, I'm not trying to throw shade, I feel like I'm just missing something! Can someone point me to the 'source of truth' for this product? Thanks all!

Which type computer for gateway on VARA HF and FM
24
Hello everyone. I have what may be a crazy question, but I am trying to find a decent computer to handle my VARA HF and FM Gateway. I currently am using a gaming pc but I have seen on some videos that some folks use a mini or microcomputer. Not a computer expert by no means so What do you use? Any suggestions on a better pc setup? Just need some help so I don't buy something that will not last or work well. Thank you for any help with this matter. Jeff K4HVF

Walker County ARES needs help with VARA FM on the 991-a
15
Walker County ARES is trying to setup VARA FM to be able to use Winlink on their 991-a radios. I have been looking online for help and checking videos, I do not own a 991-A, out but there is plenty on HF but not FM. Do you need a different cable from the USB cable that is used for VARA HF? What mode do you select? This is a couple of the questions that I have. They are hosting two Boy Scout Troops in a couple of weeks and would love to be able to show them how this works. Thank you for any help. Jeff K4HVF
