VARA HF Not Connecting

I am new to the group. Jose EA5HVK suggested I write and see if anyone can help me out with this issue. As background I wanted to see if the shack could work off one computer as I have been using both Mac and Windows for various things. I bought an iMac and Parallels with Windows 11. Windows 11 is a fully paid for operating system. As I am sure most of you know Windows running via Parallels is based on ARM64 Architecture which can be problematic. However it does have an x86 Compatibility Layer built in so many applications do work. At first the Icom IC-7300 was unable to communicate with Windows 11 on the iMac. Icom Japan offers two drivers neither of which worked. I was able to solve that problem by going directly to Silicon Labs and downloading the Silicon Labs Universal Windows USB Driver. The 7300 and Windows 11 on the iMac via Parallels now communicate with no issues. That's the background (and perhaps this solution will be helpful to others using Windows 11 with ARM64. For example the Microsoft Surface Pro which natively runs an ARM64 version of Windows). The problem now is that I am not able to connect VARA HF. ?The Winlink/VARA program does the 10 try and comes back with "unable to connect". ?This has been going on now for about two weeks. At first I chalked it up to Propagation but at this point I suspect something else is going on and would appreciate any feedback. I should also add that as a test I re-connected the 7300 to my Dell Windows Laptop to see if that would work and I still get failure to connect across multiple sites and multiple tries. Any thoughts/help would be appreciated. 73. Paul

You could try running VarAC, it is a very popular way to "chat" using Vara and if all else fails you can see if you are getting out as the PSK reporter will show your signal being received. Most users are active on 20m (14.105 calling/centre QRG). Assuming you are actually being received with VarAC, your next check is Winlink.

VarAC is popular but sadly many seem to only want to "beacon" and not have a QSO...

Paul, this sounds like something that happened to me several years ago. ?If you loaded the driver?after?attaching your xcvr, Windows may have already identified your connection and “helpfully” installed its own driver. ?My solution was this:
  • Open Device Manager
  • At the top menu line, select View::Show hidden devices
  • Delete the drivers for all instances of ?USB Audio CODEC and Silicon Labs Enhanced and Standard COM Ports. Open each of the following to find them:
    • Audio inputs and outputs
    • Ports (COM and LPT)
    • Sound, video and game controllers
  • Detach?the interface cable between your computer and radio
  • Re-install your Silicon Labs driver
  • Connect?the interface cable between your computer and radio

I hope this helps. ?I know how frustrated you must be, having dealt with this problem for over 2 weeks. ?Best of luck.

Hi Paul,
Is the radio transmitting?? i.e. does the radio go into transmit (com settings).? If so, is there audio (Windows Sounds and Sound Settings).
On the VARA display, are you seeing data wave forms (Windows Sounds and Sound Settings) from stations you're trying to connect to.
I'm assuming the VARA and Winlink Express Settings are correct.? (Soundcard Settings in VARA and Radio settings in Winlink Session window).
I struggle with this as well with different setups and soundcards.? Radio settings for internal cards can also be frustrating.? I haven't setup my 7300 yet so I'm no good there, and I run Windows, so I'm ignorant on VM on Mac as well.
My path to success has been to be methodical and document everything.? Taking screenshot helps in that regard.

Best of luck.? Don't be shy about walking away and clear the head.? Please share your inevitable success.

Paul;

Do you have another radio, that you can use to monitor your transmit signal?

I find that is one of the best tools you can get, for diagnosing problems with digital modes such as VARA!

Thanks. Good suggestion on documentation. I will be sure to share when I get this working.
