Frustrated, can't get WinLink Vara to talk to IC 7300

I am moving to a new Windows 11 Laptop. I had VARA working on previous laptop.
Now, when I select Vara HF from the drop-down and start a new session. The VARA modem loads, but i don't get the intermediate window that would allow me to set up my radio.
How can I get to the setting for Radio?
Thanks, Dick
KJ7EAW

Check your sound card settings.? For me WIN11 removed all my sound card settings.? I even think i had to reload the Icom drivers.? Steve N4RAF

Dick,

The Radio Configuration is a menu under the Settings?menu of the VARA HF WInlink Session Window, the VARA HF window only manages the Sound Card.

The 7300 requires a special Serial Port driver. Hopefully you have already installed it before plugging the radio's USB cable to the computer, as Windows will load a driver that won't work for you? If not you will need to down load it from ICOM's website ()?and follow the installation instructions they provide? ().? I have found them to be rather thorough.? The first steps you will need to follow is the part about uninstalling the driver that Windows loaded.??

There is nothing "special" about this driver!?

It is a six-year-old version of the standard driver for the Silicon Labs (a,k.a. "Silabs") CP-210x? chip used in many USB<-->serial "dongles". ? It is widely used by all three major Japanese radio mfrs (Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom) for serial-over-USB memory programming, CAT controls and sound card PTT keying.

Thank you.
I have installed the Icom driver for ports.
Also, I discovered Windows 11 Sound Settings has a line "More settings". When you click that it takes you to the familiar settings for the CODEC stuff.

That said, I still can't get to the Radio settings to tell it I have an IC 7300. I know that it should show up right after I click Open Session. It doesn't. It does open the Vara screen with the round gauges, which is sitting down on the task bar.

Thanks,
I do have that driver installed.

In the open session window you need to select settings/radio to select the radio type.

Dick,

If the VARA modem app is showing in the task bar, that implies that the session window started the VARA modem. Is the session window also showing in the task bar? If so, maybe it is off-screen.

If this is the case, try moving the session window back to the main screen by:

Shift + right-click the icon on your taskbar and click ¡°Move¡±
With the window now selected, use the arrow keys to adjust its position

Ralph,?
Thanks. I apologize for the delay.
I agree, it acts like it was happy with the settings and went ahead and opened the Vara modem. I have corresponded with Jose and he has no help.
I am wondering if there aren't just some settings somewhere on my laptop saved over from a previous of Winlink express? Maybe even in the Registry.
Do you have any other thoughts?
I looked outside the WinLink window, but did not find anything other than the Vara screen.

Dick,

After you start a VARA FM session, you can hover on the Winlink Express icon in the task tray. If you see two little windows pop-up, one is the VARA FM session application.

Move your mouse into that little window and right-click to open the window controls.

Move your mouse into the window controls and click on Move.

Now your mouse focus is set to that window. Try click-and-drag to move the session window into view, or use the right/left arrow keys to do likewise (it's slow but will eventually get there).

I suggest you get screen shots of the different screens as well as screen shots of your settings. What is the old saying "one picture" can replace a thousand words.

Check your CI-V address in Winlink and on your radio.? They need to match.? The only time I've had issues with Winlink/VARA on the 7300 was when I was in MARS and had to use the IC 7100 setup to run their modems.? To do that I had to change the CI-V to emulate the 7100.

Hi Dick

There is a file called RMSExpress.ini in your RMS EXpress folder. You might not see the .ini extension, but this file is one of the configuration settings files. Double click on the file to view it in something like Notepad. Scroll down to the section titled [Session form]. There should be a set of numbers for top, left, width, and height. You might check to see if those numbers are so large that they are putting the VARA HF Session Window beyond the visible part of the screen.

Mine are as follows:

Vara HF top=273
Vara HF left=450
Vara HF width=775
Vara HF height=400

I installed Winlink Express on my new Windows 11 laptop (HP) and didn't have any issues with seeing the session windows for any of the different protocols, but who knows... strange things can sometimes happen.

Thanks. I'm out of town for a few days, but will start working on this again when I get home.
