Basic UPS Config

Hey guys,
?
? ? Using my Alinco DM-330MVT and one or more of my lifepo4 or lead acid batteries, would I be able to safely configure a basic UPS to give my gateway battery backup in the event of an outage?

I use an Epic Pwrgate on my Vara gateway. Makes setup simple.

Sorry, you’re asking a different question. I’m a little off from a recent illness.

I like it. What model are you running?

No I think this is exactly what I’m looking for. Solid state switching from power supply to battery backup. Hope you’re feeling better David!

This is not a VARA Modem specific question on how to make a RMS Gateway basic UPS.? Having said that, it depends.?

1. The Alinco?DM-330MVT power supply is perfect for this application because this power supply has the ability to set the output voltage over a stable range.? Many other amateur radio grade power supplies are fixed voltage output and many will self destruct if the power supply is disconnected from the 120 VAC power source and the back flow of DC into the power supply will damage the power supply.? This is well documented and is covered in Repeater Builders web pages.?

2. The West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate is perfect for this application.? Read The Fantastic Manual several times.?

3. "... one or more of my lifepo4 or lead acid batteries..."? Using the West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate?you can use lithium iron phosphate battery?(LiFePO

) or?LFP battery?(lithium ferrophosphate) OR Lead Acid OR? Lead Acid Deep Cycle batteries, BUT you can not mix the battery types at the SAME time. Each battery type has a different charge voltage.?

4. The ambient temperature of the system does matter and it limits the battery type that can be used. Most Lithium iron phosphate battery?(LiFePO

are not happy below freezing. So if your RMS Gateway is inside your house, that will be OK.? If the RMS Gateway is collocated at a repeater site and it is NOT in a heater environment and it will be exposed to freezing temperatures, then Lithium iron phosphate battery?(LiFePO

are not the best.?

The West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate will also need an additional Anderson Power Power distribution system power bar to provide power to other items such as the RMS Gateway computer and WiFi device.? This is a perfect application for a mini-computer that operates on 12 VDC (Nominal).

You need to do your nominal 12 VDC (13.8 VDC) calculations for all device in the system.? The West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate is great for these systems.? There are other device around that will do similar work.

I also use the Alinco?DM-330MVT power supply and West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate with a Anderson Power Pole power distribution system when doing portable radio operations in my 1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia hippy bus for portable radio operations and a small Honda generator to keep the house battery charged up and powering an Engel 45 L refrigerator (keeps the beer cold).?

Cheers!

I’m sorry that this was not a VARA specific question but this response was so thorough and well thought out out. This is all the information I need, and more. And nothing I did not need. Beautiful response. Thank you so much and cheers to you Stuart!
