Our local ARES organization currently has a VHF Winlink gateway system set up for 1200 baud packet operation. I am investigating how we can have this gateway station also host VARA FM connections.?
I have a couple of questions: ?- Is it possible for a VHF or UHF gateway station to support combined packet and VARA FM operation on the same radio channel, with one radio? ?- Can a VHF or UHF gateway station set up for VARA FM 'wide' Winlink operation also accept connections from VARA FM 'narrow' clients?
Separately, if I properly configure my station for P2P operation with VARA FM 'wide' capability, will it respond to connection requests from VARA FM 'narrow' peers?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Replying to your questions: ?- Is it possible for a VHF or UHF gateway station to support combined packet and VARA FM operation on the same radio channel, with one radio? W3RWN> Yes, but the modems do not know each other exist on the same radio channel, so the equivalent of "doubling" will occur if users or the regular?broadcast of an ax25 beacon occurs. ?- Can a VHF or UHF gateway station set up for VARA FM 'wide' Winlink operation also accept connections from VARA FM 'narrow' clients? W3RWN> Yes, we operate our gateways in WIDE mode with flat TX/RX audio. Narrow mode clients regularly connect. Suggestions: 1. When convincing users to switch to VARA FM, don't get hung up on the $69 license fee for higher level use. It's been our experience?that even Level 1 on VARA (ie: Unlicensed) works better than 1200bps AX25. 2. VARA FM has a more robust modem and works better in low signal and multipath?environments. 3. Don't put Narrow mode gateways on the air. Put Wide nodes on the air, and use glat?TX/RX audio (ie: 9600 mode on your japanese amateur radio) Once some of your users report speeds such as 25,200bps, you will see a rush of users then also wanting higher speed and wide mode.
4. Sell your Signalink. Move to a Masters Communications DRA Board or Repeater Builder RIM Lite soundcard interface. Randy, W3RWN Burien, WA

In BPQ you would have 2 ports… Similar to these below. Just note these are mine on HF… But I can help you adjust for two VHF sound ports.. Note both ports has
an interlock comment… INTERLOCK=6 This prevent any outgoing connect attempts while the other port is attempting a connect or is connected..
So aother words.. You have a VHF Packet using uz7ho and another port running VARA say on a Signal Link it would be either or. But at any given moment either would
be available.. to a User..

Anyway you can run both on one radio… But one at a time all controlled by BPQ. Anagin it knows which mode Is trying to connect and connects when asked. Or if
outgoing you use the ATTACH (port#) and then c callsign… 73

OK, But BPQ does not control VARA Transmit. BPQ sends data to the VARA FM Modem running on a Windows PC. The Windows PC decides when to transmit. For example, you could be connected to your BPQ node using AX25 at 1200 bps.
Then I decided to test my connection to your VARA FM modem with the Auto Tune feature in VARA FM.
The VARA modem will not ask BPQ if it may transmit. It will respond to the VARA FM user. So I don't think INTERLOCK is 100% effective. On Fri, May 15, 2020 at 11:32 PM Kutche, Jerome M (Mitchell) USA via <jerome.kutche= [email protected]> wrote:

Use a signalink or any soundcard modem, Run VARA FM and UZ7HO Soundmodem software … More to follow

Jerome,
Could you please describe how you do that so that a user on AX25 and VARA FM on the same radio don't?interference with each other?
I'm also interested in how you make BPQ run VARA FM.

Replying to your questions:
?- Is it possible for a VHF or UHF gateway station to support combined packet and VARA FM operation on the same radio channel, with one radio?
W3RWN> Yes, but the modems do not know each other exist on the same radio channel, so the equivalent of "doubling" will occur if users or the regular?broadcast of an ax25 beacon occurs.
?- Can a VHF or UHF gateway station set up for VARA FM 'wide' Winlink operation also accept connections from VARA FM 'narrow' clients?
W3RWN> Yes, we operate our gateways in WIDE mode with flat TX/RX audio. Narrow mode clients regularly connect.
Suggestions:
Put Wide nodes on the air, and use glat?TX/RX audio (ie: 9600 mode on your japanese amateur radio)
Once some of your users report speeds such as 25,200bps, you will see a rush of users then also wanting higher speed and wide mode.
4. Sell your Signalink. Move to a Masters Communications DRA Board or Repeater Builder RIM Lite soundcard interface.

Ok… You want to do Packet and VARA FM.

Our local ARES organization currently has a VHF Winlink gateway system set up for 1200 baud packet operation. I am investigating how we can have this gateway station also host VARA
FM connections.?
I have a couple of questions:

?- Can a VHF or UHF gateway station set up for VARA FM 'wide' Winlink operation also accept connections from VARA FM 'narrow' clients?
Separately, if I properly configure my station for P2P operation with VARA FM 'wide' capability, will it respond to connection requests from VARA FM 'narrow' peers?
Thank you for any help you can provide.
