Hi Jean, Ahh, I see, you were looking for BBS's in operation, so Jeff's answer was a lot better than mine. As he mentioned, there are several BBS's using VARA HF that are part of the TPRFN group (
). The frequencies are shown at that site. Besides those, I am aware of the following off the top of my head. (below are the node calls). I'm sure there are others also. Arkansas N9SEO-3 Indiana N9LYA-8, WW6Q-7 Wisconsin KB9PVH-7, W9GM-7 Oregon W7EES-7, W7BMH-7 If you are looking for stations between Quebec and Texas (I assume you are in Texas now or will be very soon), I would send N9SEO, N9LYA, WW6Q, and K7EK (Kentucky) personal packet messages and ask them what frequencies they are listening on. 73, Lee K5DAT |

开云体育Hi Lee, ???? I am aware BPQ support VARA. I am looking for some who are
on HF, Call and Frequency. VE2PKT Support VARA FM, but I am 2800milles, since there is no HF on PKT, I am looking for a door to reach him using VARA, to much QRM on 20M for packet to
reach the closest HF station.. 73 Jean

How to monitor another convesation
Hello,
Can anyone tell me how to monitor a VARAC conversation?
I have set up another instance of VARA HF to run in monitor mode and have selected Monitor on the Monitor pull down.
I can here the traffic and I can see the signal ICOM 7610 scope screen and on HDSDR.
I set the VARAC frequency to correspond to the frequency of the traffic I see on the Spetrum scope i.e. 14.107.250
But I cannot see any text on the VARA HF monitor window that goes along with what I am hearing.
?
What am I doing wrong?? How can i get monitor a chat to work?
?
Thanks,
Dave W4EIP.

Re: Soundcard ( computer side)
开云体育In the Windows task bar, right-hand side.? If an app is currently using the microphone, the icon shows up there, and if you click it, it takes you to the 'new' Windows 10/11 Settings app, which is not always very helpful.? That is why I posted how to get to the 'legacy' sound control panel, to make sure that the default Windows sounds are not going through the radio interface.? I hear this all the time on both VARAC and FT8 frequencies. Another good reason to use a separate sound interface of some sort, instead of just plugging your radio into the mic and speakers/line out jack on the PC. 73,

Re: Soundcard ( computer side)
开云体育Run Windows Key+R mmsys.cpl to bring up the sound control panel.? Make sure that the 'default' mic and spkrs are NOT set to whatever audio channels you have associated with your radio interface.? Always plug any USB cables back into the same socket on your PC as before.? If you move them around, the COM ports will change, and if it includes an audio CODEC, Windows will assume that you wish to assign the PC mic and spkrs to the 'new' audio channel. 73,

Soundcard ( computer side)
开云体育
I was on VaraAC talking to a guy. He said my audio as passing through. ( don't know how that could be)
I have not had any issues with several contacts.? He told me to click on the microphone at the bottom. When I did this it somehow effected the soundcard and because of this the Vara Modem is effected.
I think it is only on the receive.? also effecting Winlink of course too. Any advise or settings to try?

Cross-County Road Trip Again Shows Overwhelming Superiority of VARA for HF APRS!
开云体育In October 2024, I made a major road trip from
my home QTH in central Michigan to Los Angeles and back.? On
this trip, I made the most extensive test yet comparing the
performance of classic 300-baud HF AX.25 packet vs the VARA
high-performance software modem for 30-meters HF APRS. ? I beaconed every 10 minutes, alternately on
classic packet and on VARA,? on the 30M APRS channel during the
entire 6125 miles (9850 Km) of the
round trip.? My home station in
Haslett (near East Lansing) Michigan received and igated both
modes. In addition, several other stations around the US also
served as igates for the VARA mode. ? The trip again confirmed again the
overwhelming superiority of VARA, with it's built-in multiple
levels of forward error correction, over classic HF packet.
There were many days on the trip where I heard NOTHING in the
car on classic packet APRS (lots of solar storms &
disturbances), but copied multiple stations (including my own
home station) on VARA. ? Full details on the trip, the setup and the results here on my website: ??? and click on the link for ??? ?
????
P.S My proselytizing for APRS-over-VARA seems
to be catching on -- I am now seeing igates on both coasts and
the midwest beaconing regularly on the APRS-over-VARA mode on
30M since the trip!

Re: Vara with Pin Point APRS
I am linking Pin Point to Vara Kiss over IP on the transmitting station. I have tried Vara to a Signalink and a DRA 30. Set both levels correctly. Vara tones sound good over the air. Both stations USB. Both results same when sending a position beacon.?
I am hearing your station and Igating it most of the time. My recieve station uses Ui-View connected to Vara via VSPE. The sound card is a DRA-30.
In listening to your vara tones over the air the transmission is longer than AX 25 but when I send a beacon it's much longer than yours. By the way I tried YAAC with the same results.
Any other Ideas?
