Re: 30 Meter VARA APRS - Test Run Today!
Oh, and the antenna is mounted to the roof via NMO but mag mounted for support. As it'll tear the thing metal like paper. So it has a full and proper ground, with greatly helps the performance over a mag mount with a coax run into the car. Also reduces the RFI into the vehicle by a lot. Now I'm not sure why you are focused on my home VHF IGate "KNAPPA". Other than clearly you guys don't look at timestamps at all when looking at raw packets.? Just to show you. 18:47 was an evening test of the band that did not go well. I had a difficult time getting out and hearing much. Very weak overall.? 2025-01-05 11:15:42 PST:?>APDR17,,qAR,::SMS??????:T{1 2025-01-05 11:15:50 PST:?>APDR17,,qAR,::SMS??????:ack5618 2025-01-05 18:47:44 PST:?>APDR17,qAR,:!4610.24N/12334.24WR? KNAPPA is tactical call, which is 100% normal and 100% legal on APRS. In fact it would be if we didn't use these types of calls. KNAPPA is my off grid solar powered APRS station with also houses VARA APRS for 40m, a Winlink gateway on VHF, a VHF repeater, UHF remote base, multiple dual band rigs, a secondary HF rig, a couple computers, and some other things. With constant power outages, this is a must have thing. |
Re: 30 Meter VARA APRS - Test Run Today!
WA8LMF. Yes, I got out fairly okay after the band opened. I wouldn't say "quite well", as it missed beacons and way too many messages alike. All that I heard was very weak as well. Remember, that I'm coming from 40m. Reliability is not DXing across the entire country to get to an igate with very weak signals. It's about strong signals to and from igates. 30m did not provide that this morning at all. Not even this afternoon. Though signals were stronger this afternoon, they were still very weak. So messaging again was not great, but was definitely better as the sun was setting! Messaging is one the key things in APRS for many of us. So tracking and messaging are what we judge by. They are not necessarily equal due to the VARA speed differences between messages and basic position reports. One major problem with 30m and the current network is that igates are?NOT timed. So every 2 way igate keys up at the exact same time causing a lovely clash of gibberish. On 40m, we are timed so that this doesn't happen. This significantly improves IS to RF gating. I will be conducting more tests as the work week continues. |
Re: 30 Meter VARA APRS - Test Run Today!
I was going to say, the digi is ID'ing at regular intervals via the status message just fine from what I can see; Most of the colocated, high elevation digipeaters here in the PNW are also configured the same way. Usually the name/ID signifies the mountain top or geographical area it is covering which makes it far easier to identify at a glance over a callsign. Examples; Geoff VE7KA ? Re: 30 Meter VARA APRS - Test Run Today!
开云体育Digipeaters can be only denoted by an SSID only. For example, a couple of our local VHF digipeaters are ‘CHILLI’ and ‘CARROL’. The trustees contact info is contained within the beacon status message, fulfilling the legal requirement of identification. These are RF digipeaters. ? KNAPPA status: ? ? It depends on how fast the hardware/software at a given igate is in processing received transmissions, which APRS-IS server an igate is logged into, and the latency of the Internet from a given location; i.e. how many routers are traversed between the home station igate and the APRS-IS server they logged into.? A lot of users don't pay attention to, or attempt to control, what APRS-IS server they log into? - I'm constantly seeing reports between mobiles & home station igates in North America being being passed through APRS servers in Europe or South America for no reason.? randomly pick a server from a pool of servers only in North
America), ? instead of to Finland, Singapore or Rio de Janeiro,
you can cut hundreds of milliseconds or more off the Internet
latency.? For me in Michigan, I can narrow it down even more by
entering "midwest.aprs2.net" in my igate logins -- it's a virtual
server that picks from a pool of servers only located in the
middle third of the US. ?? ? [There are nearly a hundred APRS-IS servers around the world -- choose one physically near to your to log in your igate...] One other question:?? When you say the antenna was mounted on the
roof, was this an actual hard mount, or just a mag mount?? Even
the large triple magnet mounts just don't have enough surface area
in contact with the car's body sheet metal to be an efficient
ground/counterpoise to the whip at the lower HF frequencies (below
15-20 meters).? This has NOTHING to do with SWR. ? A hardmount
with a metallic connection directly to the body sheet metal could
easily triple or quadruple your ERP on 30 or lower.

30 Meter VARA APRS - Test Run Today!
I'll be doing a mobile test this morning and this late afternoon PST on 30M VARA APRS. It begins in about 20 minutes! I will be on a 35 minute drive going west from my location this morning. I'll be using a 30M ham stick for the task, just like I do on 40M. Roof mounted antenna, with 50W of power. I did a pre-test, and 40M propagation looks great, but 30M seems to be struggling at the moment. I can get out on 40M from my based and mobile, but not 30M either way. So I'm hoping that once I get mobile 30M will pick up. Let the games begin! NA7Q |

VARA HF changes my Band settings
I have a Yaesu FTdx10. I have noticed that, when I use VARA HF, it changes the display settings on the frequency Bands it tries out. For example: When looking for a gateway on the 40 Meter Band, I noticed that VARA changed my frequency span display from approx. 7.124 MHz - 7.300 MHz with a Mode setting of "USB" to a frequency span display of approx. 6.977 MHz - 7.177 MHz with a Mode setting of "Data-U". Similar results took place when VARA HF looked for available gateways on the other Meter Bands, as well. I then had to manually re-set the frequency span displays and modes on the Bands that VARA HF tried.? My question is this: Is this a normal happening when VARA HF is in use or am I the only one this happens to? Why doesn't VARA HF? "clean up after itself" and leave my settings on my rig as they were originally? Is there some way to stop these involuntary display changes from happening? Thanks for any help with this, George Mason KE8TSL |

superior weak-signal performance of VARA during really mediocre
