Re: Can't get the Dang VARA to run correctly

Yes, that's what the VARA modem Graphic User Interface (GUI) looks like.

Does RMS Ex. hide the modem window for Winmor? What might be happening
is the host program, RMS EX., hides the modem graphic after it starts
the modem. Did you try holding the ALT key and then press the TAB key to
see the open applications? Is VARA one of them? Start things up again
and check.

Have you tried making a VARA call? I think it's running, just the GUI is
hidden because after VARA is started, the host program doesn't need it.
The graphic is just a pretty picture. The modem doesn't need the GUI to
function.

You might have better luck troubleshooting if you worked with someone
who runs RMS Express.

I have the program here but I don't have time to play with it.

Tell me about the display.

Could it be that VARA is running but you just can't see the
graphic?

Look at the VARA.ini file in the VARA directory and see that
values are
in the Position section. The listing is Top Position = (value)
and Left
Postion = (value) The numbers are indicating the number of
pixels from
the top left corner of the screen to the top left corner of
the VARA
graphic display. If the value shown is larger than the pixel
size of
your display, the graphic won't be visible, it will be "off
screen".

(In Windows 10, click the Start icon and type Display, then
look for the
resolution setting. You should be using the recommended
setting. The
VARA Position settings should be about half of the Windows
numbers to be
visable on the screen.)

The top left corner of your display is 0,0. You can edit this
file with
your text editor (note pad). Shut down RMS Express and the
VARA modem
before editing the file. Put a number like 20 in both position
values
and save the file. Restart VARA and RMS Express and see if the
position
of the graphic remains on the screen.

Also, does RMS Express start the VARA modem itself, or do you
have to
start it manually? I've read that if you start it manually,
you should
start VARA modem first.

Just a thought. This may not be the problem at all, but it's
worth checking.

Ah, good. Nothing wrong with RMS Express then. Is the Winmor executable

Jeff,

Look in the Windows event logs under Applications and see if there's
anything there. It acts like there is a conflict, like a port conflict
or other resource conflict. Usually, Windows will warn you of those
though. See what the log file says. Do you run any other software modems
with RMS Express? Winmor, ARDOP? Do they behave?

Jeff,

That eliminates the Windows 10 lockout then. I see Jerry suggesting
white-listing VARA in your anit-virus program. I wouldn't
re-install RMS
Express. It shouldn't be a host program problem. I didn't have any
problems with the VARA install here. I don't run RMS Express, so I
have
to think about this a minute...

Dave,

To be honest I think its C:\ vara\ vara.exe but not sure can't access
the page to check any of that !! When you go to drop down to load
vara
in rms express and click open it starts to launch vara but before it
finishes loading the page disappears so all those settings are not
accessible I've reinstalled the software with same issue
im complexed on
the thing !! I don't know if reinstalling Rms express will help
or not
don't want to lose my address book and the settings in
rms express trying that.
