Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

George,
?
I have run a Wnlink Packet RMS station for about 6 years now. I use an ICOM ID-880H mobile rig and a SignalinkUSB.
?
The system is configured in both soundmodem and VARAFM to use VOX within the SignalinkUSB, Therefore no requirement to use a COM port.

Re: Connecting with VARA-FM, but not sending/receiving messages

I get the same result using an AIOC and a Baofeng HT with VARA-FM. Everything works great accessing a local packet BBS, so I know that the hardware is working, but when I try a Winlink session, I see that my radio connects, then I hear the Winlink node send a series of short bursts of data, but no decoding is taking place, and after a few iterations of this, the node disconnects, having neither sent nor received messages.

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

Hi Mike,
?
I am running a Winlink RMS Packet gateway.? The RMS Packet automatically connects to either Soundmodem or VARA FM depending what what mode it hears coming in. I can't seem to configure the three pieces of software so this happens.
?
For a client operation, I select what ever mode I wish to use, so either Packet Winlink or VARA FM Winlink, and the appropriate software is automatically engaged correctly.

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

On my setup (DigiRig + SoundModem) I must have the Windows Sound Card Playback level no greater than 45 or the radio (Icom IC-207H) will not transmit.

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

Hi George,
?
I've been running both side by side successfully for over a year. There are a few things to be aware of with Packet. The biggest thing is the timing. But I was able to get both to function even using a repeater.
?
The easiest way to get things going is to get to a simple setup. Just get SoundModem and EasyTerm functional. Once you can connect to your Packet station correctly, then carry those settings to RMS Packet Gateway.
?
I can take screenshots of the setup if needed. I just remember with Packet, timing was really important, especially when going across a repeater.

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

I am probably missing your point. I use WINLINK with packet and soundmodem OR I use WINLINK with VARAFM. ?VARAFM never used simultaneous with soundmodem. ?

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

It's a pretty easy setup.
We've used a Yaesu 1500 and also a 7100, Signalink, Soundmodem and Vara. All are using VOX and it works perfectly doing so. We are only running 1200 since the Signalink is an older model. I do recall that the Digirigs may need a pad modification as they can run a little hot.
?
I used the same doc for guidance. However, I did not use the AGWPE settings, left it with the Packet/KISS options (depending on the software). Set all the port options to VOX.?

Thanks, Steve,
?
I took a look at the modems. Looks like there are some for the radios I have been testing.

Hi Bob,
?
I have been using different radios.

Re: Winlink RMS Packet with VARA FM and Soundmodem

?I've been running this way for several years with a as my Soundcard and a Kenwood TM-271 2M radio modified to bring the 6-pin mini-DIN contacts available on the motherboard out to a mini-DIN female cable connection. Has been running 24x7x365 since late 2021.

I have tried using a Digirig mobile or Rigblaster Nomic sound card setup. The Window Device Manager shows the com port and the VARA FM and Soundmodem software settings requires a com port for the PTT control, but both can't use the same com port. Perhaps I am not using the correct settings. Here is one recommendation, and I have tried others.

Re: Baofeng/Kenwood/AIOC

Remember that a magmount is not a perfect antenna.
The digirig mobile has molded on ferrites. It works perfectly with winlink express every time.
Even used it with my ancient Icom IC-229H into the mic jack. (T+R+Gnd+PTT).

Re: Baofeng/Kenwood/AIOC

I use a Digirig and a magmount outside on 2M with both a BF and a TYT.
I posted a BOM in the digirig forum.
I tried the AIOC and had the same problem. toroids on the cables didnt fix it.

Before giving up on the Baofeng handheld, try using a remote antenna and at least 10 feet of coax to position the antenna away from the Baofeng. I have had acceptable results using an antenna located away from the handheld and associated computer.
The TX/RX delay may still be an issue but I have successfully used my Baofeng handhelds when using a remote antenna. Worth a try!

Hello All,
I am expecting to receive an AIOC interface in the next few days, after un successfully trying to use simple audio cables to my Baofeng hand-held. The VOX in the radio "hangs" for quite a while after the TX audio stops, and I'm assuming that the handshake from the RMS station is never heard. I have used Winlink/VARA on HF (IC-7300) with success, and I'd like to get VARA-FM running.
Has anyone had good success with the AIOC and the Baofeng radios for Winlink/VARA? Is Direwolf required for this to work?
Thanks, and 73, Dave KJ7WT

Re: Baofeng/Kenwood/AIOC

Ok, thanks for that info! As mentioned, I've used VARA HF with RMS Express, and have been frustrated trying to find a reliable HF link. There are a couple of 2m? FM nodes nearby, and even if the speed is not as fast as it could be, I am looking more for a reliable connection at this point. I'll also look into a cable for my FT-70D and see if results are better?
