That eliminates the Windows 10 lockout then. I see Jerry suggesting white-listing VARA in your anit-virus program. I wouldn't re-install RMS Express. It shouldn't be a host program problem. I didn't have any problems with the VARA install here. I don't run RMS Express, so I have to think about this a minute... Dave - W7EES On 12/1/18 6:03 PM, kd4qit@... wrote:

Re: Curious findings...
Winlink is an organization, not a mode or a modem.
I agree that we shouldn't get hung up with misinformation and stick to the subject of the group. Hope to hear you using VARA when propagation improves! I'm seeing multiple weak signals from the East in the early morning hours here in the West. 73 - Dave - W7EES |
Re: Curious findings...
I've have lots of reservations regarding the Winlink group since it was introduced in the 90's. I don't like that radio traffic is so easily routed to the internet, depriving RF networks of activity. The disappearence of the local packet network is the result here. The Newington, CT book publishing company who claims to be the National Organization of Ham Radio, struts around glad handing and back slapping as the entire RF network sinks into oblivion because of their support for the use of internet routing. The NTS has suffered costly losses due to their ineptitude. I participate in the WL2K network reporting service, which I find a useful resource for locating RF participants. I don't condone deliberate bypassing of the RF network by IP routing, although I have some connections there. Propagation conditions and an otherwise dead packet network provide few options. VARA is not an exclusive Winlink group modem, contrary to popular belief. It's being used here and elsewhere on BPQ hosted? HF links. There is a misconception that Winlink is a mode. Winlink is the name of an organization. See:?https://winlink.org/? Their web page says it in plain english. Global Radio Email. There are Host programs and Modems, even some Terminal Node Controllers out there. I don't recall the name Winlink associated with any of them. Maybe a brief review of Title 47, Part 97, Subpart B, 97.115 would be helpful. I don't see that sending e-mail via any digital mode is illegal, as long as you follow simple rules.

Definitely need to discuss the pros and cons. This is how our networks can continually evolve into a more efficient use of equipment and frequency allocation.
There is something for all of us in this hobby. VARA is new to me but making some headway, so will see where it goes from here. |
Re: Curious findings...
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAll of our gateway operators only allow messages originated by hams, so has not been a problem for us.Like any tool, Winlink can be misused. ?And there are other tools that we can use like Fldigi that don¡¯t have the complication of interfacing directly with the internet. Let¡¯s talk about the neat stuff we can do with Vara, since that is the name of the group! Using Vara-FM on a local repeater and it goes blindingly fast (over 3000 bps). ?We use RMS Express Winlink to tie into our local BPQ32 system and it beats packet hands down. ?Easy to use client and BPQ32 makes the routing over HF easy. ¡ªJeff AE5ME On Nov 29, 2018, at 10:47 AM, Tadd KA2DEW in NC via Groups.Io <tadd@...> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWinlink is not a good thing to have a ham radio project associated with.As far as I know, the gateway operators never make sure the messages they are sending are signed by a ham. ?If they are not signed by a ham, then the gateway operator is responsible for the content. ?As far as I can tell, the advocates for Winlink know that it is not legal and think the benefits outweigh the violation. ? hmm¡ say far away from people who think like that.? Garbled responses from the VARA modem.
I mentioned in previous postings elsewhere, some of us are receiving strange reply messages from the VARA modem. An example that I posted earlier:
I'm running BPQ v. 6.0.17.1 with VARA v.2.2.1 and I notice in the BPQ VARA Modem monitor and in the bpq bbs log, the following entry: ? 181124 11:43:35 |N9LYA???? The connect request initiated with C N9LYA in the BBS connect script and as shown in the log does not include W7EES, yet it appears in the VARA} response. Is this being sent by the VARA modem to the sound card that way? It may explain why I'm not connecting to N9LYA. (More likely, propagation, but it's odd.) First Contact
Well, after having to fix my antenna the dark after an ice storm, I have make my first VARA contact, although brief. A little after 1300z today, I had a brief connect with w7ees. So, nice to see a little progress because the mic, power out, and sound card settings is a bit vague with the IC-707.
