I was able to connect to a gateway using ?vara hf. ?I could not get my Winlink Outbox email to go out, ?The vara dashboard was all in the green. the S/N was at the bottom of the green area. MY radio(Ftdx10) was transmitting just fine, but the email stayed in the Outbox. ?Any ideas what is causing this issue?

I have several issues with WDT making those kinds of blanket statements.
- It makes it sound as though Winlink, a system with gateways around the world, cannot cope with routine communications at the same time as the volume of traffic expected during a localized disaster. Is the system less robust than we're led to believe?
- It ignores the fact that normal Winlink use in areas not affected by a localized disaster or in an area likely to be the target for getting communications out of the disaster area has absolutely no impact on disaster traffic. Should European (or NW USA) users stop holding routine nets when a hurricane strikes Florida?
- It ignores the fact that Winlink has a broad network (SHARES) operating outside of the US amateur bands specifically or the use of government and essential facilities use.
- It ignores the fact that US amateur operators are already required by 47 CFR 97.101 to "give priority to stations providing emergency communications" and not to cause interference to "any radio communications." Does WDT feel the need to treat all amateur radio operators, worldwide, as children instead of thinking adults?
- The notice posted on the Winlink website (with a worldwide reach) asked to suspend all routine traffic "until further notice." However, "further notice was never posted on the website. The request simply disappeared. And the suspension request continued to be propagated on social media well after the WDT request disappeared.

We should use our heads, use common sense, and be considerate of others. I don't need WDT to tell me that.

The Winlink Development Team has made it clear that we should refrain from sending low priority messages, i.e. Winlink check ins, test messages, etc. until regular communications have been restored in the affected areas.

Who is making calls NOT to use Winlink, except for emergency communications!?!? It should be used enough on "blue sky" days so that it is simply routine when needed in an emergency. I'm thankful that firefighters don't only train during live structure fires!

Practice, practice, practice so you'll be proficient when needed... and know from day to day that your station and the RMS stations you hope to use are functioning properly.

There were some calls in the past 3 months to reduce usage and limit it for emergency comms.
Perhaps that's part of the reason?

I'll see if I can connect to your gateway this Saturday morning. Almost every Saturday we set up a ham radio demo at the Fulshear Farmers Market and we typically have a 40 meter inverted V antenna at about 24 feet high. With this type of antenna I can usually connect to gateways within 300-400 miles on 40 meters from Fulshear, Texas.

K4HVF with a Gateway usage question
I am still new to operating a VARA HF Gateway so is it normal to see the usage decrease this time of year? The gateway was getting multiple usages a day and now I might see two a day.
I have checked the antenna, radio, computer and everything I could think of.
Just curious about this.

The vara window monitor is used to see if a string signal can be decided, but otherwise keep it off and select a station from your winlink pulldowns to add to your "favorite" station connections.? As long as your radio is sending out a connection request you should?be fine.
Also it depends on propagation, your power, ALC settings, windows sound muted if you use and external sound "device" like a DRA-50, signaling, etc ,? So a lot to think of but many a site to read various setups depending on radio and interfaces.
My power is off for my area so only have a bit of advice which I hope helps? Greg
