Re: What sets the Vara modem speed?
Stephen,
Are these other machines also 32-bit Win XP devices, or are they running newer 64-bit versions of Windows? They are 32-bit XP. What kind of defective logic is this ???? Pointing out that one system works and the other does not on the same type of sound card interface and radio. It does not help to bash other people's comments and statements on a help forum. However, in your quirky way of posting, telling how to build a watch when only the time was asked, I believe you have solved the issue. Ui-View will not work properly with Vara on a 32-bit XP computer. End of discussion. Wayne? WA5LUY |

I wonder if the issue is Windows XP.? Looking

it extensively on Windows 7. ] ?? But nothing said about VARA
itself. [Sometimes new programs will definitely NOT
WORK on older flavors of Window, and other times it's just
that the author didn't bother to test/verify it on older
versions.] Also the "bittedness" of Windows may be an
issue.?? Virtually all Win XP machines are 32-bit, while most
machines that came with Win 7 or later OEM came with 64-bit
processors and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 or later.?
My APRS mapping webservers and igates all run
on a Windows 7-64 system with four VMware virtual machines
running Server 2003 32-bit? (the server version of XP), The
four 32-bit VMs run copies of UIview (born in the XP era and
definitely a 32-bit program).? They link via IP to the host
machine where two copies of VARA and 2 copies of the UZ7HO
Soundmodem (one for VHF and one for HF) run in the native
64-bit host and connect via IP to the VMs.
Also, since VARA is being linked to UIview via
a VSPE? TCPIP<-->serial interface, the 32-vs-64 bit
versions of VSPE may be an issue.? I don't know if VARA has any dependencies on the Microsoft .NET stack, but the versions of dotNET that came OEM with Win 7 and later are definitely later versions than the ones that were available as a bolt-on option for Win XP.
Note that there is a huge generational
difference between Win XP and later versions of Windows.?
Ignoring the retail version branding of Windows, "under the
hood" when you query Windows versions with test utilities: Windows 2000 is Windows 5.0 Windows Vista is Windows 6.0 Further, the Windows 6.x family is the first
time 64-bit versions of Windows were widely distributed to the
general public, preloaded on computers at retail.
Are these other machines also 32-bit Win XP devices, or are they running newer 64-bit versions of Windows?
What kind of defective logic is this ??? ? This
proves absolutely nothing!? A+B works but C+D (something
totally different) doesn't ..... ?? Is it the OS?? Is it the
different application?? Is it 32-vs-64 CPUs? Is it squirrels
chewing on your Internet connection? ? ???
UIview32? was born in the Windows XP era and is
completely at home there.? Far more likely it's VARA or
VSPE.....

Re: What sets the Vara modem speed?
Erik
The transmit station setup is a Windows XP laptop connected to a DRA-30 sound card connected to a Icom- IC 706 MKIIG. The laptop is running Ui-View, VSPE Emulator with Vara. The ALC and power is set up properly. This is the station that does not work.
?
The receiving station set up is the same as the laptop but connected to a IC706. The receiving station, WA5LUY-11, is receive only. This station has been on the air for a little over a month and copies about any Vara station in the US so I know it's working.
?
I have a working tracker in my truck, WA5LUY-5, running Pinpoint with Vara on a window's 10 computer connected to a 706? MKIIG.? I just got back from a short trip and was igated by Michigan and Washington State stations. I am in Arkansas.
?
I am convinced the problem is UI-View in the XP laptop since pinpoint works in the Windows 10 computer. I have made every change in the UI-View and Vara setup I can think of with no success. I need someone with UI-View experience to help me here.
?
Thank You for your reply.

Re: Windows 11, vara hf and Yaesu FTdx10
Update - based on a post I saw recently in a Winlink applicable to a different radio, I learned that in Winlink Express when the radio name is selected in the PTT Port area, it means that CAT commands are used for PTT. That answers the question I had. 73, Lee K5DAT |
VARA FM keying
I use a very common, simple, and fairly inexpensive solution to keying VARA FM on most any FM Radio.? ?I use a DRA-30 (other DRA models will work too) to provide the sound card function and the PTT function.? These? ~$80 "Sound cards" provide good bandwidth and separate PTT control to most FM Radios.? I have personally tried it without ANY radio modifications with the Alinco 50Watt DR-135 without any radio mods. I have also used the same setup (with the addition of a 15 pin DIN connector) on a Chinese TH-9000D with good results. Using a dedicated sound card for the application is the key to reliable operation with full VARA FM Wide bandwidth. Rick Muething, KN6KB? Winlink Development Team |
Re: What sets the Vara modem speed?
No.
Thats from the recording device I connected to the radio input to hear the sound. The problem is the switch to data you hear. Every location beacon I have heard use the tones that start out in the audio clip. They don't switch to the buzz sound which I think the Vara modem is calling data.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Unable to set up vara fm with my Alinco DR-185 with SignalinkSMILEY, ?
The radio-specific settings in the VARA FM modem software apply only to PTT activation... and only for those radio models that provide a serial port or USB connector that supports PTT activation through a "COM port" or CAT mechanism. In every case, these are "all-band / all-mode" radios, not VHF and/or UHF FM transceivers.
?
That's why the radio Brand and Model choices only appear on the "PTT" window that is presented by the VARA FM "Settings -> PTT..." selection.
?
Since your SignaLink activates the radio PTT through a VOX mechanism, you should click the "VOX" radio button in the "PTT via" frame on the VARA FM "PTT" window.
