I spent 45 minutes looking for a website that sells VARA HF and can't find it.? I don't know who wrote the software, or if there is documentation, or if there is a book.
?
Actually I don't even know what it is beyond a communication protocol.

Does anyone know?

Start by downloading Winlink.? You will find links to download VARA on the Winlink site.? It’s the best performing soft modem for HF. On Tue, Sep 17, 2024 at 5:46?PM Grant Rostig KI5VLA via <=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育Grant, I see others have answered your questions on where to find the software and instructions. Once you get your software set up, contact me and I will send you an Excel file showing the FT-991A menu settings that I use to get VARA-HF to work. It also will show settings for VARA-FM and VARA C. Be patient. It is a great way to communicate. I just went through this learning curve over the last 6 months. Once you get it working, let's try to use it to contact each other. Cheers,? Re: Using VARA HF on VHF FM
I would disagree.? All versions of VARA use OFDM, ?multiple carriers (tones) each modulated at a slower rate using DPSK. ? The initial handshake uses dual PSK, so two “tones”.? When sending data payloads, there is an ACK after each data frame of about five seconds.? The modulation level can increase or decrease according to the ACK report.? In all cases, it’s audio as far as the radio is concerned. On Fri, Sep 13, 2024 at 7:06?PM k3eui barry via <k3euibarry=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Using VARA HF on VHF FM
?
?
VARA HF (used with HF SSB radios) has the ability to alter the audio frequency ?at the sound card level in order to maximize throughput. It does that during the “handshaking” dance when a link is made with an ssb radio.
?
The software does NOT attempt to alter the VFO carrier frequency.
You can see the change in audio pitch on the meter on the VARA HF window.
?
?
VARA FM lacks that feature. Or, to say it more plainly, VARA FM pitch of a tone does not change during the handshaking dance.
?
?
A friend and I tried to run VARA HF ?on a 2m FM simplex frequency - it did not work. Then we tried using VARA ?FM on an 80m SSB radio - it also did not work.
Just a test to confirm - you must use the VARA FM modem with a 2m FM radio.
?
?
If you wanted to scan both HF ssb frequencies and VHF/UHF FM frequencies - you have a problem.
I’m sure the VARA programmers have a more thorough answer.

Re: Vara HF - adjusting ALC on FT-891
As others pointed out, there is a drive level right next to the Tune button. But just for future reference, Windows has a volume control that applies to individual apps. This allows you to adjust specific apps for specific volumes without messing with the master volume. And some apps such as WSJT-X (and its various versions), JS8Call, MMSSTV, all have built-in drive level control that are isolated just to that app. And many of those apps retain the drive level per band. Very handy.

Re: Vara HF - adjusting ALC on FT-891
开云体育On that screen where you press TUNE there is a slider called DRIVE LEVEL!? Slide to the left to reduce drive which will reduce ALC.? Sliding to the right increases drive which increases ALC.

Re: Vara HF - adjusting ALC on FT-891
开云体育Lots of places to adjust transmit out level.? But probably the best place so that it does not upset any other programs digital level in on the Vara HF modem program.?? Go to <settings><Soundcard> Hit the tune button and adjust the slider.? That should adjust the level of the audio from the computer to the radio. Peter WA7MOX ? Sent from for Windows ? I know this must be very obvious, but I cannot find the answer.? I have my FT-891 setup through a digirig to Winlink Express running Vara HF.
?
When I press the Tune in Vara, the ALC is very high.? How do I reduce the ALC on the FT-891???
?
I have tried the RF control, and that does nothing.? in the FT-891 io group it says in USB mode (I am using USB-digital) to reduce the mic gain.? That is no help either.
