Re: VARA-FM Highly Variable Throughput

Hi.

First thought is that what radio is used on the third (South?) site?

VARA FM is rather picky on TX/RX switchover timing which might cause the mentioned issue.

North was using a commercial J-pole about 8 feet off the ground, while south was using an Arrow 3-el Yagi on a pole (I don't know the height but was it was elevated). We recalibrated before almost every test.

A third site (west) was 9km and 13km from north and south respectively. Calibrations yielded SNRs of 23 to 27 dB in all cases.

North and south could initially exchange files at good speed as stated above. We then tried north to west and found that west could not send to north while north could send to west at good speeds. The former would start at level 9 and end up at level 1, with no data transferred at the higher levels.? The latter would send the same file about 3 minutes.

We then elevated north's antenna to 8m, and tested again. It started to rain, which may be significant. We found that south to north did the same thing as the west to north test, starting at level 9 and dropping to level 1, and sometimes disconnecting. North could send to south without issue. We changed back to the original antenna configuration with no improvement. The elevated antenna showed the best signal strength and SNR in calibration.

South tried sending to west and had the same problem.

While with the variable terrain and probably knife-edge diffraction, we're surprised at the extremely variable results without corresponding variation in signal SNR, and also the extreme difference between forward and reverse directions. We're going to review and set up another test, but we would appreciate any suggestions, comments, or similar experiences from others that might account for this?

Re: Windows Installer for Office 2013 runs when I start VARA

Did this problem just recently begin?

You might try to uninstall Office 2013 and then reinstall to see if that remedies the problem. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling VARA and the reinstalling.

Re: Windows Installer for Office 2013 runs when I start VARA

My guess on this is there is some part of Office that got overwritten or clobbered as part of VARA installation. If you have the media to reinstall Office, I would uninstall it and then reinstall it. I would also use Revo Uninstaller to do a thorough uninstallation.

Another possibility is there is some plug-in or add-on for Office that VARA touched. Essentially, use the same complete uninstall and then put it back.

Re: Windows Installer for Office 2013 runs when I start VARA

Office 2013, huh? No problem with that.
VARA has been written in a number of programming languages, including Visual Basic, VB is great at accessing Windows resouces like files and devices, while other, more low-level languages are faster and more powerful in calulation and signal processing.
I know that microsoft's Dot.NET framework grew out of Visual Basic, which relied on .DLLs to provide specialized functions.

I'd suspect that you have an older machine, and current VARA is trying to use an older Office 2013 DLL which wasn't required when you installed it.

Perhaps try installing the current dot net framework from Reboot just in case.

Hope this helps, 73,

I have seen something similar with an app I developed some years ago. I think it came down to dll versions. Not the easiest thing to track down.

This sounds like rf to me.? Try chokes on usb cable and antenna system, and grounding radio if you haven't already.

Re: OCX problems

The original poster requested a way to unregister VARA¡¯s OCX & DLL files manually for a broken installation, so this is to address that question. If you wanted to then re-install VARA, you would then re-run the VARA Install.exe (after this procedure).

Could you be using the default data mode connector settings? (page 12-12 of the full 7300 manual, )
SET>CONNECTORS>DATA OFF MOD
SET>CONNECTORS>DATA MOD

The default connector is ACC for many things, so that's a clue...

Like many on this forum, I also use Vara/VarAC with an IC-7300, I have no problems at all using it and the mode remains at USB-D.

I am QRV by remote at the moment using Win4Icomsuite with VarAC.

Re: OCX problems

Hi,
I know this is a two year old thread, but I wanted to post a solution that I stumbled upon:

The easiest way around this would be to run the "VARA Install.exe" again from a new VARA installation.

To directly answer what you're asking though, the most complete solution would be to...
1. Re-install VARA (and make sure that "C:\VARA\VARA Install.exe" has run after you install VARA).

2. Run a command prompt window as Administrator: Windows Start Menu > type in "command" in the search bar > Right-click on "Command Prompt" > Click on "Run as administrator" > Then click "Yes".

3. In your "Administrator: Command Prompt" window: Type in

FOR %1 IN (C:\VARA\OCX\*) DO regsvr32 /u %1

and then press Enter.

3b. If step 3 doesn't work, try running this instead in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window: Type in

FOR %1 IN (C:\VARA\OCX\*) DO C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe /u %1

and then press Enter.

You should get a bunch of message boxes saying that certain .OCX files and .DLL files were unregistered from your system.

Re: VARA HF resetting Data mod on IC-7100 and IC-7300 #ic7100

This is good advice, you need to look at the application(s) that are controlling the rig for the cause. Vara HF has no ability to change rig settings.

Re: VARA HF resetting Data mod on IC-7100 and IC-7300 #ic7100

I'm using an IC-7300 and VARA 4.8.7, and I haven't had that problem.

In the WInlink Vara HF Session window, choose Settings, Radio Setup.

There is a checkbox to Use Internal Soundcard.? Be sure that is checked.? Maybe that's the culprit.

Hi all,

I've consistently been having an issue with VARA HF resetting my radio's (IC-7100) Data mod to ACC no matter how may times I set it to USB. I'm running Win 10 and VARA HF 4.8.7. A fellow club member has reported the same with his IC-7300.

This issue persists across reinstalls of VARA, the radio USB drivers and the entire Winlink platform. Has anyone else had this issue? If yes, have you been able to fix it?

TIA!

Re: Soundcard device missing in action!

Windows XP, 7, 8, 10, and 11 have all evolved device mangment including sound. They're competing with Apple, who designs and builds both the computer hardware and the operating system as closed black boxes. They can change anything internally, both hardware and software, anywhere at any time, and basically kill (make obsolete) whole systems by doing that.
As a result, Apple makes stylish, powerful, and easy to use systems that are expensive and closed.

PCs are wildly modifiable, with an almost infinite number of hardware vendors involved. No hardware in a PC has to be Microsoft or even Intel. This is why they''re so cheap, free market in action.

Winlink's signalink setup instructions () has a few gaps.

When they say click on (the speaker icon), it's in the system tray on the right side of the task bar, usually on the bottm of the desktop.
And when they show the Sound panel and Playback Tab, the Signalink device already has been named "Signalink TX". If you can't see anything like that, keep the playback tab open and unplug the Signalink USB cable. The playback tab list should change, plug it back in, and it should change back. the line that changed is your signalink.

The RX side should act the same on the "Recording" tab.

Next, levels.... Can't ignore the windows sound levels - you've got the windows sound levels at the device level (double click the device in the sound panel), the App level in VARA, and the knobs on the soundlink. Try to avoid extremes on any one of them, if you can, for the cleanest sound.

Hope this helps.
