In practicing for an upcoming SET a number of our group have been unable to use latest VARA FM version .7 and have retreated to earlier versions. In my case, I was unable to ping or Autotune my mobile station to a known properly adjusted station (my home QTH RMS node, which ironically was running version .7).

Using Autotune, version .7 called out VU of 0 db and thus wanted less receive, but I couldn’t reduce it either in sound panel settings (mic was already at zero) or by reducing the DRA pot (there was no sweet spot until the signal totally dropped). ?Plus, the VU meter showed no deflection, all of which suggested a VARA FM problem.

?I had updated the mobile several weeks ago to VARA FM version .7. ?Reinstalled version .3 (did not have ?.5 handy)and it works like a charm. No other changes were made.?

My experience is consistent with several of the group who have abandoned ?version .7 for an earlier version.?

This problem is somewhat random, since as noted my RMS node is running version .7 with no apparent problem.?

Any thoughts welcome.?

I think that Vara was born to have ACK... look at the manual of VarAC, where explains what VARA is

As a retired IT guy, I'm a both/and instead of an either/or kinda guy. MS/Linux/Apple all have their place. My first bread and butter system was PL/1 on IBM OS/360 50 years ago and haven't stopped yet. I did retire in 2019 though. One thing that stayed true over all that time was "Pick the apps you need first, then buy the box that runs them". Even more true when we're running hobby apps written by one guy.

I love R Pies, own them (Direwolf anyone?) and have put various flavors of linux on many boxes. But there's are a lot of amazingly powerful Intel/AMD mini PCs on the market now with prices below $200 that are just waiting to get an Ubuntu partition, I recently got one () quad core, 3.4 gHz, 16 gig ram, 500 gig ssd, Win 11 pro installed for $179. Ubuntu loves it, too.

Only the broadcast, beacon and CQ calls of VarAC.

Why would you not want ARQ? It puts the mode in a league above Olivia, etc. Vara is as good as Pactor 3 (I only have a Pactor 3 modem, so cannot compare with the even more expensive Pactor 4), at a fraction of the cost.

Porting over to Linux depends upon his time, of course, but more importantly how VARA is coded. If there are lots of hooks into Windows, that would make porting or conversion very difficult.

There are a large number of Linux users,Raspberry/Orange/* – Pi users who mostly run Linux in addition to a substantial fraction who run Linux on x86 on our laptops.
A Linux version would probably generate some more revenue also.

How much request have he received from the Linux users ? Maybe it’s possible to talk him into building a Linux version ?

I'd be happy if EA5HVK / José were to make available a binary blob we could use - perhaps he'd consider that while also protecting his source code.

Curious why you have to shut down Packet to tune VARA FM?? ?I "ping" all the time with Packet open.

John, Thanks. I ?assumed that was the case but wanted to check before offering my RMS as a digipeater for our upcoming SET. I have had to shut down RMS Packet when auto tuning or pinging with VARA FM with a neighboring station.?

VARA FM will digipeat while RMS Packet is running or if VARA FM is running alone. I'm pretty sure that if someone is connected to the RMS Packet gateway through VARA FM then it won't digipeat.
