Re: VARA HF Window Closes Itself
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýPropagation is everything. There are lots of times that I can't connect anywhere. Your antenna setup will probably better dictate your a success too. When I can't connect on VARA I drop back to ARDOP. And usually can find some success. Don't
be discouraged you're on the right track!
And when you do get a good VARA connection you'll be astonished!? LOL

Rick,
I changed the port from 8300 to 8500 by modifying the vara.ini file directly. That fixed the problem with the VARA window closing.? Now I can connect to a station but can't seem to get a message through!? I'm tinkering with AF settings in the radio, sound level settings, etc. to find the right setup.? Maybe I'm just fighting propagation. Thanks for the suggestion.? You hit the nail on the head! Robert KG5RLD |

Re: VARA HF Window Closes Itself
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI haven't been following this but have you changed the command port number to something different? I think it starts out at 8300 you might could try 8303 or some other number. You have to change it both in the winlink session settings and the
Vera settings and restart everything.? A port conflict could cause a crash.

Good suggestion, Jeff, but I'm using only one monitor.? Also, the other
digital modes are working normally with the same setup. The VARA window worked normally right after it was initially installed.? Once this issue began I un-installed and re-installed VARA several times, but the problem persisted. Thanks for your suggestion. Robert KG5RLD |

Re: VARA HF Window Closes Itself
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDid you have your computer connected to dual monitors at one time? ?You may have the Window for the Vara session offscreen. ?It¡¯s there, but not accessible. Change your resolution of the desktop in display settings and it should force it back. ¡ªJeff AE5ME On Mar 31, 2020, at 1:15 PM, rdupree@... wrote:

VARA HF Window Closes Itself
I am running Windows 10 on a Dell PC.? I have previously been able to run VARA, but now within several seconds of launching it from Winlink the VARA window closes itself.? The status bar in Winlink indicates that a VARA session is running, but without the VARA window I cannot start a transmission nor change any settings.? I am able to open VARA from its .exe, but, of course, it must be opened by Winlink to function.? Other Winlink modes work fine, as does fldigi, so I'm confident the interface is OK.? I have also allowed the VARA folders in my firewall and antivirus.
Another user posted the identical problem, but at that time nobody offered any possible solutions.? That user eventually needed to re-install Windows 10 for an unrelated reason, and that fixed his VARA problem.? Does this suggest a register entry problem?? Does anybody know what might be going on and suggest a solution (short of reinstalling Windows)? Regards, Robert KG5RLD |
Re: Masters communications RA-40
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýRandy,
Yes, the RA-25 would probably work into a data jack. ?Plenty of computer audio output to do that. I am using the Yaesu 7800 to a Signalink at the moment but the ARES group wants to get to VARA 9600. ??Going to need to find something to upgrade all the ARES radio location to get to VARA ?9600 Thanks for your input. |

Using an RA-25 with good success. I avoided the higher models as I was unsure if the additional amplifier stages would add distortion or twist. Also using the Repeater Builder RIM-Lite Maxtrac edition with great success. I think we¡¯re at 5 or so gateways using those with VARA Wide on CDM-750 radios set for flat audio. I¡¯ve connected once at level 11, 25,000 bps. Mostly getting 14,000-19,000 bps. My home station is a Yaesu FT-8900 with RA-25 Randy, W3RWN? Re: Masters communications RA-40
Yes! I'm using it for Winlink server and it works great. I'm also using the RA25 with a winlink client. I like the flexability of the RA40 because of adjustable Tx & Rx audio. Once set you don't have to mess with it.? Jim NH6HI? On Mon, Feb 17, 2020, 11:07 Bob Sampson <k6mby@...> wrote:

VARA FM 3.0.1 config file problems
Good Evening,
?? Just an FYI.? I just installed the new version of VARA FM tonight and I ran into a problem. I was able to run VARA FM on the old version. The first indication of a problem was when I got an error in Winlink that it couldn't connect to VARAFM via the control port. Everything looked good though. I then tried to go to the PTT settings. When I clicked on it, it crashed VARA FM and closed the program. It get it to work, I had to delete the contents of the config file. The next time I loaded it, Winlink didn't have any problems and I was able to open the PTT tab. Tyson KI7FXJ |
Re: Connecting To Modem Using TCP client
Doesn't look like anybody responded to your question. What is the "TCP Client" you are using? What ever it is, it needs to use localhost (127.0.0.1) tcp port 8300 to communicate with the VARA modem. The Red TCP light is telling me that there is no TCP connection. The Yellow "Busy" light indicates the channel is busy with a signal of some sort. VARA normally won't transmit when this condition is present. You need to fix the tcp control port first. This post is quite old so you may have found a solution from another source. I'll watch for any responses.

Connecting To Modem Using TCP client
I am trying to connect to the VARA FM modem using a TCP client so that I can
control the modem using VARA Protocol Native TNC Commands. When I try to connect, I get
no response from the modem. Do I need the licensed version to make this work?
?
The color icons below the S/N meter on the right side of the modem interface
show yellow for Listen, red for TCP and yellow for Busy. I am not sure what?
the colors means.
?
The VU and CPU meters are active and appear to be working.
?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
