Re: Connecting To Modem Using TCP client
Doesn't look like anybody responded to your question. What is the "TCP Client" you are using? What ever it is, it needs to use localhost (127.0.0.1) tcp port 8300 to communicate with the VARA modem. The Red TCP light is telling me that there is no TCP connection. The Yellow "Busy" light indicates the channel is busy with a signal of some sort. VARA normally won't transmit when this condition is present. You need to fix the tcp control port first. This post is quite old so you may have found a solution from another source. I'll watch for any responses.

Connecting To Modem Using TCP client
I am trying to connect to the VARA FM modem using a TCP client so that I can
control the modem using VARA Protocol Native TNC Commands. When I try to connect, I get
no response from the modem. Do I need the licensed version to make this work?
?
The color icons below the S/N meter on the right side of the modem interface
show yellow for Listen, red for TCP and yellow for Busy. I am not sure what?
the colors means.
?
The VU and CPU meters are active and appear to be working.
?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Since the last update on VARA, it now on attempting a connect it only tries 2x and disconnects. On other modes it attempts a connect? 7 or 8x or more, now on VARA 2x and disconnects. What do I have to do to have it connect? like the other modes, any help appreciated. POB/K8LEN

Re: No response
That doesn't seem like a rational and logical next step for an amateur radio operator in a learning mode.
A simple Google search would have answered such a basic question and it would also have educated on the issue of protocol versus mode. Groups like this can be very helpful to new users with specific questions regarding actual use. One final thought, it's a hobby. We have jobs and family responsibilities. If your questions have an expiration date, you should stated as such. Best wishes on your next query. Joe, N2QOJ |
Re: Bands/frequencies
Martin,
I apologize for not answering your question in real time. I always assume some else will. I view VARA as a mode within Winlink, and as you know there are real problems, both technical and human about monitoring traffic. If you understand how Winlink works then you will understand how VARA is just a different protocol within Winlink. It is not like other digital modes like PSK31 that you can just sit back and watch traffic. I am standing by to answer any questions you may have. Charlie B. KM4ZZ? |

Re: Vara FM connection timing out

Be sure the audio levels are set correctly. We went thru the same thing on our N4SER gateway where the transmit knob on the Signalink had to be turned down to make sure audio didn't overdrive. I found less is better especially since we also run a repeater here capable of passing VARA FM thru it to the gateway. It's best to focus on the green box in the modem app to adjust audio levels at both ends for a nice focused pattern. Good luck. It took some tries but once it's nailed it's a great mode.?

Vara FM connection timing out
I have a Winlink gateway setup using RS Packet 2.1.32.0. I have AX25 packet working on a KPC9612 and Vara FM set up on a different frequency and different radio. Vara FM is on an IC-7100. Drive level set at 85, retries 4 tx delay 400ms.?
When other stations attempt to link my station responds and but then the other stations times out. There may be a few attempts back and forth to link but then the remote station times out. We have adjusted tx delay to as high as 1000ms.? At first, this was happening with only one station, then a second station attempted and the same thing occurred.? In an effort to test locally I set my ic-7100 on 6 meters FM so I could link to it from my ic-7300. with two copies of Vara FM, I was able to link without any issue.? We are not sure what is going on or what I might be missing.? Thanks in advance for all the help! Rich, KR4PI |
Not Working Anymore
When I first downloaded the VARA program as instructed on WINLINK, I connected to our MARS system without any problems on VARA and WINMOR WINLINK. SO I bought the VARA
program. Now when I connect I get the following message after connecting: [BPQ-6.0.18.39-2IHJM$] *** B2F Protocol Required - disconnecting ? ?B2F protocol required *** Winlink features required - disconnecting ? ? Winlink features required *** Incoming SID is invalid: [BPQ-6.0.18.39-2IHJM$] When I try connecting with WINMOR WINLINK now I get the error message that B2F is not detected and I am disconnected.? Any ideas?? Greg, K4PVA |
