What sets the Vara modem speed?

Does anyone know what sets the modem speed for Vara??
I suspect it is something in the connected client software. For example, Winlink changes the speed when connecting to various stations.
I have been experimenting with Pinpoint with Vara for a mobile station. I don't see a way to change the speed from 500 to 2300. The position report works at 500 but takes 20 seconds which I think is way too long.
?
Looking at WA8LMF's stations -6 is beaconing at 2300 and -5 is beaconing at 500.
Stephen, please chime in here and tell me if I am correct. Also, I would like to know what is running -6.

Re: Win 11/Soundmodem/VARA challenges (volume slider)

do Win + R?
Should open the run box
Type: mmsys.cpl?
Hit enter, this will bring up the sound panel where you will be able to adjust audio levels
?
Hope that helps

Re: Win 11/Soundmodem/VARA challenges (volume slider)

In W11 you can also get to sound settings by right clicking on the speaker icon in the task bar; then scroll down the resulting system > sound page, and click on ¡°more sound settings¡±; then in the familiar W10 interfaces you can set defaults, properties (levels), etc.

Re: Win 11/Soundmodem/VARA challenges (volume slider)

If you don't wish to go the "Command Prompt" route, you can simply type "Control Panel" in the Windows 11 search box.?

When the Control Panel window opens, select the "Sound" icon and make your adjustments for incoming and outgoing levels.? Be sure to select the correct devices when setting levels.??

Re: Win 11/Soundmodem/VARA challenges (volume slider)

Good afternoon - Have you tried adjusting using the W11 Sound settings?
?
To access those settings (similar to the way W10 was set up, but getting to the settings is a bit tricky), open a Command Prompt and enter
mmsys.cpl
this should open the sound settings and you can take it from there.
?
Good luck!

Win 11/Soundmodem/VARA challenges (volume slider)

Hi all-
First post here, I'm having somewhat of a unique issue from what I'm seeing (or the lack thereof I guess).? Trying to chase down a low audio transmit via a Signalink on VARA FM, VARA HF, and also manifests on Soundmodem.? I'm sure it's a stupidly simple thing that's a switch I'm not switching in the software.
?
Basically I think the problem is that Win 11 Sound Mixer won't let me adjust the volume for the apps, as I can see it won't do that.? ?I don't know how to convince Windows to let me do that.? I've tried everything I can think of, including shutting off the Firewall temporarily to see if that's the issue.? No joy.? Best I can do is a partial connection using Soundmodem where I have to basically crank the transmit wattage from 5 to 30 and use the J3 jumper in Signalink and max both transmit and receive on the box.
?
Symptoms are that I can take the same radio/SignaLink/antenna system with a Win 10 computer and everything is rock solid and works fine.? I take it to Win 11 computer with all the setups the exact same with the exception of the volume slider on the sound mixer, and the only way I can get any success at all is with Soundmodem using the J3 audio max jumper within the Signalink.? ?Signalink tech support says it has to be something stupid in Windows, I agree, but it's smarter than me.? Again the issue isn't the radio, nor the signalink, it's got to be something within Windows.
?
Has anyone ever encountered this and knows what stupid little thing I'm missing?
?
Thanks!

I take this object off the APRS-IS and retransmit it on the new APRS-over-VARA channel so people have a test signal to verify their QSY to the new channel is working.?

On UIview (but no other APRS clients I am aware of) you get both the point object for the point directly under the ISS, and an approximately circular area object showing the ISS's current radio footprint on the ground.

By the way, I got an email less than an hour ago that Lynn KJ4ERJ just passed away.? I suspect the ISS object won't be around much longer.....

Great info Mark. I am curious about the PTT port (Optional) setting in Winlink Express. Does that mean the other (standard) serial port is not used (COM14 in your case) for PTT, or does it mean that it is used? It seems that if it were used, the port selected would be COM14, but if it were not used, it would either be blank or indicate "unused" or "N/A". To me, "FTDX10" is ambiguous.

There seems to be confusion about the COM port resources on the FT-991.?? Three devices appear on your PC when the FT-991 is connected to a PC.??

  • One is the internal sound card that appears as a "USB Codec" to Windows.??

TWO virtual COM ports also appear.? The COM number of either can be changed at will? in the Windows Device Manager.

  • One is used for memory programming and CAT control; i.e. actual data transfer

  • The other is used only for classic DTR/RTS com-port? hand-shake-line? PTT keying. The data connections are not used at all.
There's no confusion here with respect to the USB port on the radio and the 3 associated devices. The radio in question is the FTdx10, but it operates the same as described above. I have it working with the G8BPQ software and VARA HF. In my setup I'm using the standard serial port for RTS PTT keying, and I'm using the enhanced serial port for CAT control. The FTdx10 also has a real serial port that supports CAT control as well, and I've tried it and verified that it works.

Depending on the program(s) in use on the computer, you can use either CAT control (if the program knows your exact radio CAT control language) on one port, --or-- the COM port handshake-line control? on the other port (which will work with virtually any program on any radio),? for PTT keying. ?

Acknowledged. My question was not about how the radio works, but rather, it was about the meaning of the settings applied in Winlink Express because I am not as familiar with that program. I wasn't sure from the screenshots which of the two PTT methods you cited is actually being used, so that's what I'm trying to understand.

This two-ports-and-a-soundcard accessed through a single USB port is IDENTICAL to the external Yaesu SCU-17 stand-alone digimodes interface. ?

Both are based on the Silicon Labs CP-210x USB<-->serial chip that is widely used in both Yaesu and Kenwood radios.? The "Yaesu driver" on Yaesu's web site is a slightly out-of-date version of the current driver on "Silabs" own web site.?

Yes, it looks like the FTdx10 is also identical in this respect.

30 Meters APRS-over-VARA Frequency Change on Jan 1st 2025

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Due to frequency overlap with, and interference to/from, the "Robust Packet" channels used in Europe,? APRS-over-VARA is moving to a new channel ABOVE the present AX.25 APRS channel on 30 Meters.

Currently, APRS-over-VARA is operating with a radio "dial frequency" of 10.147.600, placing the center frequency of it's 500-Hz wide RF signal at 10.149.100 MHz.?

Starting January 1st 2025 at 0000 UTC, the new RF channel center will be 10.149.700? MHz .? To make the change, set your radio "dial frequency"? to:

???? 10.148.200 MHz USB

Until Jan 1st, I will be running the old channel as usual, and ALSO beaconing test signals (KJ4ERJ's Space Station Object) every two minutes on the new channel.

More info is on my web site at:

This page is a gateway page to multiple posts on VARA and APRS-over-VARA that have previously been scattered rather haphazardly around my web site.??

Re: APRS-over-VARA crosses the Atlantic on 30 meters!

Answers.
Question 1. Just never bothered to do it. I rarely look at the symbol collum.
Question 2. 30M dipole from tower to tree at 30 feet above ground. What is on the list are Vara only stations on 30M dial frequency 10.147.600 USB. The list was started about October 1 and runs to present. The list now contains 35 stations. Some are duplicate call signs with different SSID's. This station list was started when I switched Ui-View from Direwolf AX25 to Vara. I just delete all stations and start over occasionally.
?
Just for grins I will switch to 10.148.200 for a couple of days to see what I hear.?
By the way one of the reasons, I set up a VARA APRS station was to compare your signals on your road trip. I think my station I-Gated your -3 and -5 station most of the time east of the Rockey Mountains. I sent you an email with attachment maps of both mobile stations which showed Vara exceeded AX25 by a number of tracking locations.
?
One other thing. I am not interested in messaging by APRS. I am not being critical it's just not for me. I use it for tracking only.

Make sure your radio is in "USB-Data" [upper side band data] mode. That tells the 991A to look for audio input through the input set in the menu, its either rear using the Din connector, or USB [universal serial bus], and that there is no offset/split mode happening. That tends to get me from time to time.?
