I
have an old studio photograph identified as J. A. WOOD which was taken at the
Bogardus Studio in New York City, NY. The photograph looks like it was taken in
the 1880's with Mr. WOOD appearing to be in his 20's or 30's. The photograph
was with a group of photographs which appear to belong to the Class of 1884 at
the Union Theological Seminary in New York City, NY. I believe that this is a
photograph of Josiah Alonzo WOOD.
?
Based
on limited research and thanks to the assistance of genealogists I was able to
gather the following information regarding Josiah and his family:
?
Josiah
Alonzo WOOD was b. 6 Nov 1852 in Morristown, VT to parents Leonard WOOD
(1810-1882) and Angeline Gibbs RIPLEY (1815-1875).? Josiah was one of 5 children born to this
couple including Lorenzo Leonard; David Ripley; Alma Angeline; Josiah Alonzo;
and Mary Ella WOOD, all born between 1843 and 1858.
?
Josiah
graduated from Dartmouth in 1878 and the Union Theological Seminary in 1884 and
was ordained on 30 Dec 1884.? Josiah
preached in Durand, WI from 1884-1886 and then in Baraboo, WI from
1887-1891.? After those assignments he
moved to Sauk Centre, MN from 1892-1895 and then onto Ridgefield, IL from
1896-1900.? In 1900 he left the ministry
and went into business in Brooklyn, NY.
?
Josiah
married Martha Caldwell ORLADY (b. 1863) on 10 or 20 Oct 1887 in Durand, WI.? The couple had two children including
Elizabeth Orlady WOOD (1889-1985) and Paul Orlady WOOD (b. 1890).? Josiah died 22 Jan 1929 in Richmond, VA.
?
I
would like to get this photograph to his family and would appreciate you
contacting me if you are a member of this family or know someone who might be.
?
Thanks,
Shelley
