Hello everyone… I'm Mike Friedman W4MAF in Richmond. ?I enjoy Summits on the Air and Parks On The Air. ? ?I've been active with a SOTA for about 3 or 4 years and not licensed much longer. ?I've been activating POTA for a couple of years now (largely SSB but FM too... especially with SOTA activations). My wife enjoys hiking in the mountains and recently became licensed (W4HYK). ?She's more of a SOTA/POTA activator in the mountains, largely inspired by the hiking but equally inspired by SOTA & POTA. ? Hello everyone, I'm Chris W3CX. Everyone calls me Sully. I've been a HAM since about 2007 and into POTA since 2021. I currently have POTA goal to activate every VA park. 52 of 242 so far. I'm planning on a rove on the 28th to knock these out?

  1. K-9934 James River Heritage State Trail (Saturday after UTC Change)
  2. K-0726 Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
  3. K-1302 Holliday Lake State Park? & K-5503 Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest?
  4. K-3982 Featherfin Wildlife Management Area
  5. K-1301 High Bridge Trail State Park
  6. K-3974 Briery Creek Wildlife Management Area
  7. K-1323 Twin Lakes State Park? & K-5522 Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest
  8. K-1314 Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park
  9. K-1312 Pocahontas State Park

If anyone has any experience with them I've love to hear it.

My current gear is a 891 and truck mounted hamsticks or a EFHW if I'm not roving. One day I'll finish building my DX commander and take that out too. I'd also like to get into SOTA this year too.?

Hi Sully!

Welcome to our group! ?

Although I have not activated any on your list I have camped at Holliday Lake and Twin Lakes. ?Both have plenty of options to deploy from your vehicle or setting up on a table.?

I have visited High Bridge as well. I think the parking lot might qualify but a cool option would be to park, take the trail to the bridge and cross it and then turn right and go down to the river flats under the bridge. Easy walk ?and out of the way spot. ?

If you are interested in pursuing SOTA there is a similar group to this one you can join. ?

Good luck!

Hello everyone....I'm Tom, W5VS.? I'm a reluctant member of the 'Senior Citizen Club', first licensed back in 1975....was inactive for many years and have been back doing 'radio' for the past 7 or 8 years.? I enjoy hunting and activating...have 16 activations over the past couple of years.? Hoping to add several more this year.? I also enjoy county hunting, which is goes hand in glove with POTA activities.

My mobile/POTA gear consists of an Icom 7100, along with a couple of Tarheel screwdriver antennas.? I also have a Buddipole, that I can setup in good WX, and time permitting.

I look forward to 'meeting' other VA POTA folks, ... learning/sharing tips and techniques.

Thanks for the invitation to the group.? I've been hoping something like this would materialize in VA but was to lazy to make it happen,? Licensed since 1978 I hold an Advanced class license.? I hunt and activate while at home in glen Allen and when we travel by RV throughout North America.? My POTA rig is a FT-891 with resonant dipoles for 10, 17, 20, & 40.? I am mostly on SSB but will use FT-8 a bit.? I hope to see this group grow and be active.

Hello - thank you for the group and invitation, as well!? I’m a busy father of four, but POTA when I can. My current goal is to earn the N1CC Activator award for ten bands at ten parks.? Currently at 7.? I use an FT-891 with matching FC-50 tuner, and Hamsticks and/or a 9:1 end fed random wire.? My oldest, Aaron, is 16 and is KO4ZHW and likes to POTA with me. ?

The next thing I’m trying to learn is WinLink on HF with WinLink Express.? I have it working on FM VHF.? I’m sort of stuck, so if anyone is a WinLink guru and wouldn’t mind helping me through it, that would be great!

Thanks for the invite.? I've been in amateur radio since 2018 and doing POTA since 2019.? I have just over 520 activations in 370 parks in 3 countries (and HI).? In POTA, I'm part of the Quality Assurance Team for 9-landers and I'm the map guy for VA and DE.? My biggest goal this year is to finally finish activating all of VA and hit DE harder after that.? As of right now, I have 63 parks left in VA, mostly in the southwest area with a smattering of newly added parks east of Richmond that I'll knock out during the Support Your Parks weekend in a couple weeks.??

Hi group, Wesley here W4WDK previously KO4GNE.?
Justin (K4HXM) got me started with pota. When I got started with ham radio I was content to talk on FM and SSB but Justin changed that. I’ve got a few cw contacts but the cw pileups aren’t manageable for me. We normally have 2,3and sometimes 4 operators at the same table so we graduate toward digital so we can carry on a conversation and answer questions from people curious about the antennas and equipment.?

? ? ? Well I could go on but I’ll keep it short. Hope to catch you on the air 73.?

Hello POTAers! I'm Rich, W4PI, with a primary QTH of Alexandria, VA.? Been a licensed Ham since 2014.? First got licensed for my interest in APRS, but have shifted interest to POTA since 2022.? I'm a father of two young kinds (who also love POTA), so time is very limited, but I've still squeaked in just over 100 activations in 12 states plus DC.?

I am the author of the?POTAGW?off-grid email spotting utility (POTAGW@...).? Many of my POTA adventures take me off-grid, and far from cell phone coverage, so out of a selfish need, I developed a tool that i could use Winlink email to spot myself.? As it turns out, I wasn't alone in my need, and now share the tool with hundreds of fellow POTAers who are also using the tool when they go off-grid, anywhere in the world.? Feel free to hit me up if you have questions about the tool, or just send an email to?POTAGW@...?with the subject of HELP and you'll get an automated message back with usage instructions.

Primary POTA rig is an FT-891, 24 Ah LiFePO4 battery, with a slew of antenna options depending on my mission, including a 40 meter OCF dipole that can either be tree mounted or pole mounted, a Gabil coil antenna for tripod or truck mount, as well as a slew of Hamsticks that can also be tripod or truck mounted.??

I'm looking forward to seeing what this group becomes, and defiantly keeping my eye out in hopes that I run into some of you in the parks.

Rich, W4PI

Good evening fellow VA POTA friends,
Name here is Justin.? I have been hanging with a great group of fellow south central Virginia POTA peeps since 2020 when I got my ticket.? I really enjoy activating parks and usually with others.? My oldest daughter Natalie (W4TEA) and I have activated parks all over the central Lynchburg area.? I guess if I want a new park it will be a multi-hour "trip" at this point.? Still work full time, father of four, and have managed to get the little ones to want to POTA with me.? My local park K-1319 (Smith Mountain Lake State Park) is where you will usually find me.? I have activated that place 256 times and have nearly 20,000 Q's from that park.? Looking for the 20K award. LOL!
My favorite activity is POTA Camping.? Love merging a camping trip into a POTA activation.
So far I have activated parks with several others Wesley (W4WDK), Bob (W6ING), Natalie (W4TEA), Dewey (K4CAB), Tim (AA4SS), Mike (KQ4CKO) and Joe (K4JLT)
I have built a van that has all my gear installed including a Diesel Heater for these crazy cold days.
I use a IC-7300 Transceiver, Bioenno 40AH Battery, and my go to antenna is a homemade link dipole.
Usually run FT4 / FT8, but enjoy SSB, and many other digital modes.? I even worked Fred (KW4FM) on several digital modes just playing around one day.
?
Looking forward to meeting you all and becoming a regular to the net!

Hello,

I’m a new CW op. I have Starting fumbling my way through CW pota/Sota activations this month. Started learning Cw in April last year and so far I have made it through 3 POTA/SOTA activations. All my other CW activations were by hunting from P2P/S2S.?

I live in the Amherst area. Hope to see you all in my log soon! 73

Hello Virginia Hams?

My call sign is KZ4HB and I recently upgraded to Extra in May. My previous call sign was KI6DHL. I enjoy trying to activate Hog Island WMA using a maritime mobile setup to access the park. It is difficult access and conditions there can rapidly change. I have many failed attempts (2 this past weekend). I’ll keep the group posted if I get activated there in the future (maybe on Field Day) Glad to meet you all. 73
