Hewey Creek

Hello Group!!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the History of Hewey Creek in Mecklenburg County? It flows under I-85 just north of Bracey, Virginia.

The reason I ask is my brick wall: John Henry Hewey Sr. John H Hewey Sr was born about 1827 in Virginia according to the 1850 Granville Co., NC Census. He married Margaret Daniel (daughter of Martin Daniel Jr and Avarilla Yancey) in December of 1849. By 1850, they are living in Granville Co., NC. This is the only time I find John H Hewey Sr in any Census records. I am only able to find his wife Margaret Hewey in the 1880 Census as widowed. I have no idea where they were in 1860 or 1870. The death certificate of their son, John Henry Hewey Jr (changed spelling to Heuay) states his Father was born in Pennsylvania.

Any help anyone can provide would be amazing. Thanks in advance!!

Mr. Rathbun,

Hewey's Creek runs through our farm, on which I, and my father before me, grew up. It has been my understanding (from my parents), since childhood, that Hewey's Creek took its name from Humphrey Hewey, and that he had a mill on the creek. Hewey in 1754 received a patent to 400 acres in Lunenburg County (parent county to Mecklenburg) on the head of the Mill branch of Parhams Creek, beginning at this own corner. [Land Office Patents No. 32, 1752-1756, p. 346, Library of Virginia] In 1748 Amos Timms Shelly received a patent in Lunenburg to 400 acres on the lower side of Flat Creek (which is west of Parhams Creek), adjoining his own and Humphrey Huey's land. [Land Office Patents No. 28, 1746-1749, p 484, Library of Virginia] More land patent information can be found on the Library of Virginia website, Virginia Land Patents and Grants.

Good luck with your research.
