Re: Hewey Creek
Mr. Rathbun,
Hewey's Creek runs through our farm, on which I, and my father before me, grew up. It has been my understanding (from my parents), since childhood, that Hewey's Creek took its name from Humphrey Hewey, and that he had a mill on the creek. Hewey in 1754 received a patent to 400 acres in Lunenburg County (parent county to Mecklenburg) on the head of the Mill branch of Parhams Creek, beginning at this own corner. [Land Office Patents No. 32, 1752-1756, p. 346, Library of Virginia] In 1748 Amos Timms Shelly received a patent in Lunenburg to 400 acres on the lower side of Flat Creek (which is west of Parhams Creek), adjoining his own and Humphrey Huey's land. [Land Office Patents No. 28, 1746-1749, p 484, Library of Virginia] More land patent information can be found on the Library of Virginia website, Virginia Land Patents and Grants. Good luck with your research. Susan Bracey Sheppard ?On 9/23/22, 11:12 AM, "CHARLES RATHBUN via groups.io" <[email protected] on behalf of chrath@...> wrote: Hello Group!! Newton in VA
开云体育I have a DNA link to George Newton and am attempting to link him forward to my 3rd great grandfather, Robert Henry Newton. Hence, I am tracing all of Geo and Mary’s children. Possible son of George & Mary (Riggs) Newton I know that George and Mary had a son named William, but I need better than censuses to prove the link. I believe that when George and Mary moved to North Carolina in the late 1700s, William remained in Virginia. What would make better proof is if I could find that George had sold his VA land to William. Short of that I’d like other valid links. Otherwise, what I’ve found is: William Newton: born: Abt. 1766 in Mecklenburg Co., VA ——-——-——-——-——-—— Found on 1810, 1820, 1830, 1850 ================================ Unknown source has his death 29 Aug. 1851 age 85 |
Re: Williams - Lockett

Re: NEWTONs of Mecklenburg 1730s - 1820's
Wow! It’s been a long lockdown due to coved, but I’ve used the time well.? Robert Henry Newton b. 1818 in North Carolina was pretty well documented in our family. He was father to our great grandfather, Periander Carlton Newton, b. 1842 in Robertson Co., TN. He, Robert, was a scholar of some note and written into biographical records. He married Martha Carlton Rowe (haven’t found record of the marriage), and they had a number of children.? However, several researchers have tried but have not found Robert Henry’s parents. While isolating this past year and a half, I sent to Robertson, TN archives for every record they had on Newtons. Thru land records, I found that Robert Henry’s grandmother had come to TN from NC with several of her grown children.? I traced them all back to NC and court case, lands and wills that point to Robert Henry as being the son of one of the brothers who moved to TN with their mother, Mary Riggs Newton and her husband, George Newton originally of Mecklenburg, VA. All I need now is to find all of the children of George and Mary, and their children.? Named in George’s will and other documents are: William, George, Isaac, Henry, Letitia, Robert, John, Sarah. Apparently, George, Henry, Robert and John were the Newton men who moved to TN.? William may have stayed in Mecklenburg, while Isaac remained in NC. Still I need to know who among them had sons named Robert ? I’m working on all of these people, but as this is Mecklenburg group, I’m asking about William Newton, b. Abt. 1766 d. 185? In Mecklenburg,VA Other researchers have him married to Martha Sizemore.? Any help in finding information re: William & Martha would be most helpful.? Thanks, Julia? |

Henry I, Henry II, Henry III, and George NEWTON
Henry I immigrated in mid 1600s to Rappa. Virginia
Henry II born in Rappa/Essex Virginia between 168? to 174? Henry III sold land in Essex VA and moved to Mecklenburg (at the time it was probably still Lunenburg). It appears that three Newton men (brothers or cousins) settled in Mecklenburg on adjoining pieces of land. Henry III is probably the father of my ancestor George Newton. I think this because of land records and his will. Is there another researcher who can help fill in gaps in the NEWTON history? Julia Ryden juryden@... |
Saying Thanks To Our Front-Line Workers
Jim "Pops" Jackson
First of all,
To all of you who are involved in the "front lines" of this corona virus war - Thank You for all you are doing. Without you we would be in dire straits. Secondly, Diane and I thought it would be a good thing to share what is happening in your locations as far as showing appreciation to everyone involved in fighting the spread of this horrendous pandemic that has plagued the world. Please feel free to share what your community is doing in that regard. We have all seen the firefighters gathered to applaud the health workers. Diane says that she and her neighbors stand outside their doors and clap for the health workers. She suggests singing (to the tune of "Happy Birthday") the following: Thank you very much, Thank you very much, Thank you front line workers, Thank you very much. What ideas do you have? What have you witnessed in your communities? We are together in this and shall come out of it stronger. Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden |
Re: James Cox Sr 1750 Mecklenburg VA
I've found the Library of Virginia's Chancery Index to have some worthwhile nuggets. Often these will explicitly spell out the heirs, wifes and other relations and often includes copies of any Will in question. Unfortunately not all of the records are digitized and available online but the indexes and surnames of the parties involved are usually listed. I'm not sure these would tie to your line but oldest listing is pltf John Cox vs defendant(s) EXRS of Joseph Ligon and EXRS of Abram Murray in Mecklenburg Co. 1786. The Library will create copies of an non-digitized files so you can order them (for a fee of course) but when you do that, you are gambling that the info is pertinent to information you are seeking. Of course if you are interested in ALL Cox lines in Mecklenburg County, so much the better - still has value.

Hatchells of Mecklenburg, VA
My family tree includes several Hatchell/Hatsell names. Specifically, in 1802, my great grandfather Archibald/Archer Cox married Mary Polly Hatchell, daughter of (James) Lewis Hatchell. I am looking for the name of Lewis’s wife and Polly’s mother. I found that Archer and Polly sued a Nancy Hatchell over her father’s estate. It seems this Nancy could be Polly’s stepmother. Archer and Polly named their first daughter Mary Thurman Cox, and I am wondering who she was named after too. ? If you can offer any advice or info regarding this subject, I would be most grateful to receive it. ? |
James Cox Sr 1750 Mecklenburg VA
My brickwall surname is COX. Recently, I came across research related to Richard Swepson and the Cox family in Mecklenburg, VA. He had multiple deeds of trust in the late 1700's and early 1800's. First one listed was from Thomas COX to Richard Swepson, folllowed by one from James Cox, then Archer Cox, and lastly Barlett Cox. My direct ancestor goes back to Archer, born in about 1784 in Mecklenburg, and his father James. This past weekend I found the attched newpaper item. Seems james owed back taxes on his land, and the Mecklenburg Court was considering the sale of his 38 acres in 1785. If I could get the orginal deed for this property, I would hope to get more bio related infor about james, such as wife's name, a better understanding of James' origins. If anyone is related to or has info about this specific line, please reply. Thank you in advance. I really am glad that we have a new group since rootsweb is defunct.

Welcome to the VA-Mecklenburg Group
Jim Jackson
Welcome to 开云体育, our new home for genealogical discussions. This is an
exciting time with a very impressive website and the opportunity to rekindle our communications and, perhaps, revive research that has been set aside for a time. Diane and I want to encourage you to make us of this group with your brick walls, successes, questions and whatever answers you may have for others' queries. To begin with, introductions are encouraged, including some history about yourself etc. If we can feel like a "family" we might get more out of being here. We definitely do not want to make this such a strict environment that you are discouraged from entering or starting discussions. We want you to enjoy being a part of this group and be glad you joined in the first place. If you have other group connections where you may spread the word about us that will be great as well. Looking forward to hearing from you all, Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden |
