While the Family Finder test only matches distant cousins (and brothers and sisters and parents, etc) back some 6 generations, the Y-DNA matches males back for hundreds of years. Same thing for mtDNA which is pass down in the female line from great grandmother to grandmother to mother to daughter (or son where it ends) to her daughter and so on.
