Miss original group of Rootsweb Fauquier Co., Va!

Rebecca M. Bashaw

I miss the original group of people of Rootsweb Fauquier Co., Va., Whom I called Friends? We learned a great deal of information from each other.

RB

Hello Rebecca,

When you use the term "Friends", did you mean that some were Quakers (Society of Friends)? There is a group

[email protected]

to exchange specific information about Quaker families throughout the country.

If you are an American, your heritage is either Native American, slave, refugee, or immigrant.

Back in time, the Rootsweb.com had many free and easy to locate "groups".? They were listed as "Surname Lists" and "location lists".
?? One was a Fauquier Co, VA List.? Over time, we became friendly and gave each other a lot of help.? Like Rebecca, I miss that.
Ancestry.com purchased all things Rootsweb and things waned. Eventually, it closed the site down to "redo" it.? Then it was closed for new entrees, but open to review the old data posted there.? Believe it still is available.? Many pulled their data out when it was purchased by Ancestry.com.? Many left their data which was very helpful.
? Without those free sites, most likely my interest would never have deepened.? They were a "stepping stone" to further desire for family history.? Without the data found on Rootsweb,? I doubt I would have subscribed to Ancestry.com.? Now, we have to find the open lists on Facebook.? I seldom remember them.? Those lists on Ancestry.com are limited to membership.? I never seem to remember them either.
?? Rebecca, I really really miss the old sites and friends made there also.? Some of them Friends / Quakers.

Searching in VA:? Russell,? LeMaistre;? Crier;? Rust (4 lines); Hicks;? Middleton;? Morehead;? Clements;? Singleton;? Bailey; Massie;? Dyall / Diall;? Morrey. Kimble;

Hello Shirley,

I moved lists that I managed to groups.io and tried to name them as close to the rootsweb lists as possible. Most of my lists are surname lists. You can go there and search for various lists. I know that a number of rootsweb list managers did not move their lists over so it makes it more difficult to start a new one with the same members on groups.io.

This is off topic for this list so please email me directly if you want to continue this conversation.

The whole of this is $$$$...

Back in the late 1990s when Ancestry started buying up all the Family-Tree Software companies, we all knew this was coming. It was an effort to corner the market and lock everything away so that you could only see what you pay for. Rootsweb was sold to them with the agreement that it would remain FREE always, but they figured a way to get around that by taking it offline then restoring stuff in a manner which was not user friendly. Personally, when FTM gave a message about being a good time to up load, I ignored it. I am not going to give my hard found data to someone who will put it on a disk and then try to sell it back to me. Remember GenWeb?? Genealogy.com??

We will have to rebuild, and hope that it can be protected until next time.
