Mrs. John Hanes (Brizendine?)

John Hanes died in Charlotte Co, VA in 1816 leaving a will naming his children and his wife, Phebe

I am told her maiden name was Phebe Brizendine, but I have no documentation for that.? Can anyone help me?

May I help you in Bedford County, TN?

Hi Carolyn,
?
I did a thorough search of marriage records here in Charlotte County from 1765?to 1815 and found no record of a Hanes/Phebe marriage.? I also checked Brizendine marriages and all possible spellings of all the names.? I did look at the will but there was nothing helpful.?? I would look in surrounding counties.? Charlotte was formed in 1764 (first court in March 1765) from Lunenburg County which until then encompassed the present counties of Charlotte, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, and portions of Bedford, Campbell and Appomattox.? Lunenburg had been formed in 1745 from an even larger Brunswick County.? Given Hanes's will mentions children and grandchildren, it is entirely possible that he and Phebe were married before 1765.? Also, for what it's worth, while I see the name Brizendine quite often in our records, Hanes is not what I think of as a "Charlotte County name."
?
Sorry I didn't have better news.

Glad to hear you are feeling better Carolyn,

?

Do you know the name of Ann’s sister?? Was she married?

?

I have the abstracts of Charlotte County Will Book 1 and Will Book 2 at my home.? I thought to look in those which I did.

?

Charlotte County, Virginia Will book 1, 1765 – 1791 abstracted by Bel Hubbard Wise published by Mountain Press from Signal Mountain TN.?

Charlotte County, Virginia Will book 2, 1791 – 1805 abstracted by Bel Hubbard Wise published by Mountain Press from Signal Mountain TN

I found one Brizendine in Will Book 2 (Henrietta) and a number of Hanes and Haynes in both books BUT these dates are probably out of range.? I think these books cover a period time prior to your John Hanes/Haynes and Phebe.? Perhaps when you push back to John’s parents or grandparents they will be more helpful in your search.

?

I decided to check a source that has been available online for a number of years now.? At the Virginia Memory site of the Library of Virginia, you can find digitized Chancery Court Records.

I found your Phebe Haynes here.? Phebe Haynes, along with George Roberts are defendants in a case being brought by the plaintiff, John Brizendine.? The court number is 1824-031

Go to this webpage:

1.??? Go to this webpage online:?

2.??? Click “Search the Index”

3.??? From the County/City Box, select Charlotte County from the pull down menu

4.??? In the Index number box type 1824-031

5.??? Click search.

?

At this point you have found the chancery court case.? When the screen comes up click on “view details” .? A new screen will open and you will be able to view, download, or print photocopies of the documents concerning the case. When I view these I find it is best if I click on “open in full view” as the records are easier to read.? Page no. 1 is the index details.? The actual digital copy of the record starts on page 2.?

?

I am glad I finally found your lady in something!? Take care of yourself and happy reading.

Kathy

Thank you, Jim.
?
I have been told that Phebe Hanes is mentioned in a sister's will or estate and that is how she was identified as a Brizendine.? Does anybody know some Brizendine sisters/
?
I am better--hope to go home tomorrow.

Kathy and Carolyn,
I have marriage books for Charlotte, Lunenburg, Brunswick, Amelia, Campbell and Prince Edward Counties at my home.? I did not find your couple but I will share the Hains, Haines, Hanes, Haynes, records and marriages I located in my sources:
Goochland County: St. James Northam Parish (Goochland County, Va.) Register, commonly known as the Douglas Register:
·???????? A Baptism for children of Jo: Haines and Frances Yarborough, twins Jemima and Ann; June 16, 1783, baptized on October 28, 1783, p. 110 of the Douglas Register.
·???????? Multiple baptism records for the children of William Powell and Lucy Haines (also spelled Haynes) in the Douglas Register on pp. 57, 61, 69 and 78 of the Douglas Register.? Spanning the years 1760 to 1770.
Amelia County: Marriage Bonds in Amelia County:? William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 4. (Apr., 1907), pp. 255-264.
?
·???????? January 10, 1788 -- James, Jesse & Polly Haines.
?
Campbell County:? Marriages of Campbell County, VA? 1782 - 1810
?
·???????? Haines, John and Judith Mitchell, bond 23 Feb. 1798.? Consent by Richard Vaughn, guardian and grandfather of the bride.? John Haines (bond) and Edmund Johns (bond); John Haynes (witness). ?Marriage Register___February 1798 by Charles Cobbs, lists the groom as John Hains.
Brunswick County:? Marriage Records of Brunswick County, VA? 1730 -1852
·???????? 24 March 1767, Herbert Haynes married Elizabeth Downing, exx of William.? P. 54
·???????? 22 April 1782, Thomas Haynes married Frances Stith, dau. of William.? Security: Joseph Mason.? P. 54
Lunenburg County:? Marriages of Lunenburg County, VA? 1746-1853
·???????? Haines, James P. and Martha Haines, 24 Nov. 1834? p. 55
·???????? Haines, John of Nottoway County, and Martha Walker of Lunenburg County, married 8 December 1792 by John Jones of Nottoway. P. 55
I also checked the Marriage Bonds and Ministers’ Returns for Prince Edward County, VA? 1754-1810, and the Vestry Book of Southam Parish (Cumberland County, VA? 1745-1792).? The vestry book for Cumberland does not list marriages, births or deaths but is an accounting of parish business. I found no Hains, Haines, Hanes, Haynes in them.? I have a few other sources I can check but will be tied up through the weekend and it will have to wait until next week.
