April 4th: Overheard with Jason Isbell

Jason Isbell is a six-time Grammy Award winning artist, whose most recent solo album, Foxes in the Snow, was released in March 2025. He is known for his solo work, his work with The 400 Unit, and for his time as a member of Drive-By Truckers. Outside of music, Isbell has appeared in roles in the television series Squidbillies and Billions, as well as the films Deadwood: The Movie and Killers of the Flower Moon. Isbell was born in Green Hill, Alabama.

Previously, Parker—a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner—spent eight years at The Washington Post, where she covered all four years of Donald Trump’s first presidency, was White House bureau chief during President Joe Biden’s first two years, and covered the 2024 presidential campaign as the senior national political correspondent. Before that, she spent more than a decade at The New York Times, where she covered the 2012 and 2016 presidential campaigns and Congress. She is also a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC.

Katherine Maher is the President and CEO of National Public Radio. She’s an experienced executive leading public interest institutions through technological disruption and strategic transformation, recently in areas of information and media, good governance and democracy, civil and human rights, international development and foreign policy.

Prior to joining NPR, Maher was CEO of Web Summit and served on its Board of Directors. She also worked for five years as CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, responsible for the success of Wikipedia, one of the world’s most popular digital platforms. She led Wikipedia to its highest brand trust since its founding, navigating the misinformation crisis and global trust decline in media, while doubling the Foundation’s fundraising and raising Wikimedia’s first endowment. Before Wikimedia, Maher worked on rights, democracy, and innovation at Access Now, the World Bank, the National Democratic Institute and UNICEF.

Jason Reitman is an Academy Award nominated filmmaker who most recently directed SATURDAY NIGHT, a film he co-wrote with Gil Kenan. Reitman made his feature film debut with the 2006 Sundance hit THANK YOU FOR SMOKING for which he won best screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards. He notably earned Academy Award nominations for directing JUNO and UP IN THE AIR, the latter of which earned Reitman a WGA Award and BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay. As a producer, Reitman oversaw four seasons of the Golden Globe nominated Hulu comedy series CASUAL. He also produced the Academy Award-winning film WHIPLASH and Jean-Marc Vallee’s DEMOLITION. In 2021,Reitman directed and co-wrote GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE with Gil Kenan, and in 2023, produced and co-wrote its sequel, GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE.

David Axelrod is a preeminent American political strategist and commentator and the former chief strategist and senior advisor to President Barack Obama. A former political writer for the Chicago Tribune, Axelrod produced media strategy and advertising for 150 campaigns across the U.S., culminating in President Obama’s historic elections. Axelrod is also the author of The New York Times best-selling memoir, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics. Axelrod was the founding director of the University of Chicago’s non-partisan Institute of Politics and now serves as a senior fellow at the IOP.

Jane Smiley is the author of numerous novels, including A Thousand Acres, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and the Last Hundred Years Trilogy: Some Luck, Early Warning, and Golden Age. She is the author as well of several works of nonfiction and books for young adults. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, she has also received the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature. She lives in Northern California.

Michele Norris is one of America’s most trusted voices in journalism, earning several honors over a long career, including Peabody, Emmy, Dupont, and Goldsmith awards. She has worked as a columnist for The Washington Post Opinion Section. She is currently the host of the Podcast, Your Mama’s Kitchen, and from and from 2002 to 2012 she was a cohost of NPR’s All Things Considered. Norris is also the founding director of The Race Card Project, a Peabody Award–winning narrative archive where people around the world share their reflections on identity—in just six words. Her first book, The Grace of Silence, was named one of the best books of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Kansas City Star. Before joining NPR, Norris spent almost ten years as a reporter for ABC News covering politics, policy, and the dynamics of social change. Early in her career, she also worked as a staff writer for The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times.

During his travels, he has met with community leaders, legal aid providers, health care professionals, parents, teachers, caregivers, small business owners, communities of color, and Tribal communities to hear their stories and to share how the Biden-Harris Administration is working to help their families. As the nation’s first Second Gentleman �� married to the first woman vice president �� Mr. Emhoff knows the power and importance of having women in leadership positions. He is a champion of gender equity and has seen what it means for young girls and boys to look up to Vice President Harris. Mr. Emhoff has also met with leaders across our nation and throughout the world to discuss the importance of equity in the workplace, equal pay, and access to reproductive health care.

Bradley Whitford, a classically trained stage actor, quickly gained overnight fame as the sarcastic yet vulnerable, Josh Lyman, on NBC’s “The West Wing,�� for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2001. One of the few actors working successfully and simultaneously in theater, film and television, Whitford is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents.

In 2015, he won a second Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Marcy in Transparent and later garnered a fifth Primetime Emmy Award nomination for portraying Magnus Hirschfeld in the same series. Since 2018, Whitford has portrayed Commander Joseph Lawrence in Hulu drama The Handmaid’s Tale, for which he won his third Primetime Emmy Award in 2019.

Barbara McQuade is a professor from practice at the University of Michigan Law School, her alma mater, where she teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, national security, and data privacy. She is also a legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, and a co-host of the podcast #SistersInLaw. From 2010 to 2017, McQuade served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Ms. McQuade was appointed by President Barack Obama, and was the first woman to serve in her position. Earlier in her career, she worked as a sports writer and copy editor, a judicial law clerk, an associate in private practice, and an assistant U.S. attorney. She and her husband have four children and live in Ann Arbor.

on their 16th studio album, Indigo Girls tell their origin story. They have reunited with their strongest backing band to date to create Look Long—a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers chronicling their personal upbringings with more specificity and focus than they have on any previous song-cycle.

A similar magic unfolded in 1989 when their eponymous major label debut shifted over two million units under the power of “Closer to Fine�� and “Kid Fears�� and turned Indigo Girls into one of the most successful folk duos in history. Over a thirty-five-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta, Georgia, the Grammy-winning duo has recorded sixteen studio albums (seven gold, four platinum, one double platinum), sold over 15 million records, and built a dedicated, enduring following.

Committed and uncompromising activists, they work on issues like immigration reform (El Refugio), LGBTQ advocacy, education (Imagination Library), death penalty reform, and Native American rights. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities, Indigenous environmental justice, and green energy solutions.
