ER Collets

Bill Williams

Looking for recommendations for ER collet size for my SL-1000 Unimat. Sizes and sources needed. And BTW I also have an Atlas 618, a 7X1Minilathw and a 12 X 36 Atlas so I don't need a Rex Tingey size capacity! Thanks, Bill

?Bill
?I purchased the ER16 M12 x 1.0 and the ER20 M12 x 1.0 collet chucks from here.

?

?Not cheap with the shipping to the USA, but great quality.?
?I then picked up the Cheap Chinese sets of Inch and Metric in both ER16 and ER20. The plan is to replace the cheap ones with better ones once I find out the sizes that I use the most. The ER16 set came with two 3mm and no 5mm collet. Because the Ebay seller was a drop shipper, I would have had to wait 2 months to get a replacement. I instead picked up a Techniks brand 5mm collet on Ebay. Better finish with the Techniks one, but the cost for one was equal to 1/2 the price of a full set of cheap ones.?
?I bought the two collect chucks so I can use them in the head and tail stocks at the same time. So far I have had to use them to make a few motorcycle cable fitting parts and no complaints.?
?I also have a Unimat E16 collet with the sizes in 1/32" plus a couple of them in the 1/64" range. The problem with the E16 is the very limited grip range, it is basically good only for the size on in.?

I got a clone ER-16 collet chuck and nut, and a clone Imperial collet set in various sizes from 1/8” to 3/8” for my SL.? I don’t remember the sources, other than the fact that I found them on Ebay, but not at the same place.

?

Other than having to remove the first few mm of 12x1 threads in the chuck to clear the shoulder on the spindle, the chuck has worked fine for what I’m doing with it as a hobbyist.? I know that you get the accuracy you pay for, but I also know that I only pay for the accuracy I really need.

One thing to bear in mind is that the capacity through the headstock is a little over 6 mm, and ER16 goes up to 10 mm, so why go for anything bigger? The holders already suggested should be OK. You will lose accuracy if you have to machine the holder yourself - get one that fits as supplied. If you are looking at shipping from Europe also look at GGtools. They offer ER16 holders specifically for the DB/SL, but they don't always have them in stock. I assume they make them in small batches. At the moment they have them for the U3, but I don't see any for the DB/SL:

?I recently had to make a threaded adapter for a 1967 Honda Carburetor cable. Threaded 8mm OD x threaded 6mm ID in aluminum. The ER16 chuck with a 8mm collet worked great. I used a section of rod about 1 1/4" long, trued it up, used a die to cut the OD threads, center drill, drilled to proper size and then used a tap to tap the ID threads, cut off to length and it fit perfectly.?

Based on the discussion that I have seen, I can conclude that the only sources for a M14x1 collet chuck are someone like "GG" in Germany, and no one here knows of any US source.

RC Machine has M14 x 1.0 Collet holders? stuff. Buy the holder from them ad then get the collets off Ebay.

So far I see RC has the M14 collet chuck at 79 euro.? They are Luxembourg.? Then I see GG(Germany) also recommended, charges 49 euro, but their Ebay listing says does not post to US.? Is one collet chuck 30 euros better, even if I apparently cannot buy one?? Can I have some confidence that these are made in their countries of origin, or are they just Chinese at marked up prices?? Also, it seems nothing is in the US.

The RC price also is including the 17% Value added tax. You do not pay that.? So 79 euro would be minus 17% plus shipping. I emailed them two year ago when I ordered my two holders and the responded right back.? The shipping cost a bit. I think it was because they had to send it to France 1st and then to the USA. It think that they made the holders themselves. Excellent quality.

It seems to me it is impossible to tell if products sold by European sellers are Chinese, or not, unless you ask. Products sold in the USA must be labeled as to country of origin, apparently, as all that I purchase are.

I have purchased from Chronos in the UK, and I am quite certain what I purchased were sourced either from China or India, although none were identified as such. That said, Chronos obviously writes the specs for the items, as quality and tolerance were quite good. My purchases include M12x1 chucks and a rotary table.

Same holds true for GGTools, except the source is not obvious. I purchased a Unimat DB/SL tailstock ram from them with a built-in ER11 collet holder, and the quality is quite good.

So whether made in Germany or China is besides the point (at least from a practical position), if Chronos or GGTools controls the quality. Of course, there always may be other considerations besides the purely practical, but for Unimat accessories, your choices of sources is a bit limited.

?Be careful of the USA sellers also. Many on Ebay will have USA and the american flag all over the ads. But the product is made in China. They have it available at a US warehouse, but the ads are very misleading, the product is not made in the US. And many times it is "out of stock" in their US warehouse and you have to wait for it to be shipped in. Amazon is also terrible for using non USA sellers and not telling you where the product is coming from. Always read the fine print. Many electronic and printer toner cartridges will not work in the US if they are not intended to be sold here. The toners may look the same, but the small chip inside them will not let them work on US equipment.?
?I used to work in a plant that made plastic wrap for food. We made huge rolls of the wrap and it was sent to Mexico where it was processed and package into individual rolls. It was labeled as Made in the USA and shipped back here to be sold. The plant manager told me that it was legal because they used US material. ???

You might check out MariTool for ER collets. They are made in USA. I purchased a full set of ER20 of Imperial sizes and they are definitely made in USA. It cost me over $200 for a set guaranteed less than .0003” total runout and they are worth every penny. Awesome company!
If you want quality this is it.
