Unimat Cross Slide Backlash Minimized
I removed most of dial hand wheel lash on my Unimat DB200 by adding a thin washer behind the handwheel. Lash now only about .002¡± which is very tolerable. After the adjustment I am now ready to do some actual machining on the Unimat. My first project will be ?to make a new ER-32 collet chuck. I have a complete set of ER32 collets and a collet nut so I am ready to go.

Mert Method? Would you have a link that explains that method, Keith?

I think Keith might mean to put a thread up through the piece and (as these earlier Unimats have a sliding quill in the headstock) use a bolt in the fixed tailstock to rotate the headstock forward in the right ratio.
?
Doug Collinge shows this method in his pdf on making a collet holder, should be in the Files section. |
Keith,
that is exactly what I intend to use.

In my last post I forgot to mention that I have the tap also.

Ah well, I forget that some here may not have had the benefit of Mert's practical advice.

Essentially it is a bit like the thread follower threading that can be used on Unimats, but instead of the tool travelling along the work, the work travels past the tool. In the case of something quite big, in ths case with a 1.5 mm pitch thread, I would get a bolt of the correct pitch, so M10 for 1.5 mm, and work out how to hold it in the tailstock. I would tap an M10 hole in the job, held in the three jaw chuck. Then if I loosen the headstock and engage the thread with the tailstock turning the job will mean it moves along the lathe? 1.5 mm for each turn. I can machine a thread on it provided it is a bit bigger than 10 mm. With a larger ER collet holder the threaded portion would be machined out later when the inside gets bored out. The guiding thread can be attached in the tailstock or in some way on the left, onto the headstock pulley fixing.
?
Of course if you want a large diameter 0.5 mm pitch there might be problem using an M3 screw with, say, a piece of 50 mm diameter bar. Whatever the arrangement it will be a slow process.
?
Somewhere on the forum there will be a discussion about it, but I haven]t found it yet. |
When I get to actually do the threading I will turn the thread by hand, not under power. I have done this many times and it gives a lot of control. I will not be doing this under power. I have also done this on my 7x12 mini lathe.?

There is such a wealth of information in the Unimat Files and Photos. For anyone who doesn't know this, the late, great Mert Baker of Central Massachusetts shared all kinds of methods, photos, and encouragement to the group right up until his death in his eighties. You can find the answer to your question in Photos, in the album called Mert's Mods.? /g/Unimat/photosearch?p=title%2C%2C%2C20%2C2%2C0%2C0&q=mert%27s%20mods Tim in VT |
Thanks for that, Tim and Keith. I joined this group two years ago and was unaware of Mert Baker and his contributions So this is very helpful.

And lots of shallow cuts. It's? pretty close to a 17TPI thread, 60¡ã angle, so the thread depth isn't that bad. Not like a 1-1/2"-8TPI thread would be. A 40mm diameter is fairly close to 1.5", after all, 1.57" or so.? If you've seen any of his work, you know he has the patience to do it right.? Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.? SEMPER GUMBY! Physics doesn't care about your schedule. The only reason I know anything is because I've done it wrong enough times to START to know better. Expect in one hand, expectorate in the other. See which one gets full first.

For some obscure tech reason Mert couldn't post photos so he sent them to me and I put them in the Mert's Mods album. Unfortunately he didn't have many to post. There could have been many more. He had lots of practical advice, much of it quite simple. |
I was not able to find Merts Mods in the files section or photos. Perhaps I am missing something.

I have used Mert¡¯s Method on my Mini Lathe many times and it works perfectly! I bought a bolt with the correct pitch and will use it on my Unimat DB200 and intend to make a hand crank.
