HBM 4 Jaw chuck for Unimat SL

Hi All,
Years ago a bought a 50mm HBM 4 jaw independent chuck M12 thread for my Unimat SL. I need to do some work on reducing a couple 25x25x25mm aluminium bars to 24x24x25 and thought it might be a good idea to use my SL. However, It does appear that when I remove a jaw and reverse it, it wont move back into the chuck? Does this mean that the jaws are not reversible I seem to doubt this) and if there are not, how can I realistically swap them around?
?
Any advice will be most greatly received.
?
Many thanks
?
Rob

Have a look at the scroll thread shape if the teeth are () then they should reverse if they are (( only works one way.
Hope that's clear I could draw it out but short of time.

If the jaws are not reversible, the chuck should have come with two sets of jaws. No other way to reverse mount them.

Some pics of the 4 jaw chuck - I've no idea if this reversible. It never came with other jaw parts?
Thoughts please

Thanks

The jaws are reversable.? You just remove them and turn them around.? For some off-center pieces, you can even have some jaws one way and other jaws the other way.

Scroll type chucks (self-centering) no matter how many jaws, need a different set to have reversed jaws.

Thanks for your reply Charles.
The problem I'm having is that I turn them around and then they fit into the chuck about 2 to 3mm?and then just won't go in any further? I've tried pushing them hard BUT they still wont go in. I have concerns that something is wrong or I'm not fitting this up correctly?

Thoughts please.

Kind Regards

I had to go an look at my DB-200 4-Jaw since I’d just used it with the jaws reversed.? Attached photo shows two reversed, one in normal and the other lying beside the chuck.? I suspect from a previous photo there are various versions of this chuck.

Rob:

The jaws certainly LOOK like they should be reversible.? Maybe there's a burr on the back of the jaw that stopping you from reversing the jaw?? When zooming in on your last picture, it almost looks like there's a bright spot on the back of the jaw where it's rubbed against something.? Clean & de-burr the jaws and the chuck, then oil it and try it again??
?
Don

You're not reversing the screws, are you? The jaws reverse but the
screws may only easily go in one way.
Just a notion that comes to mind.

That looks like the made in India 50mm for the db/sl. I have the same one. It is reversible but i found this chuck to be really sticky when i got it. i wound up lapping it in with metal polish for a couple of hours… and then splurged on an OG Unimat 4.

Best Regards

Robert,

?

The chuck looks dirty in the photographs, as if someone had turned wood and the sawdust mixed with the grease in the chuck.? Clean all the parts thoroughly then apply a thin film of oil to the moving parts.? Make sure no swarf is hiding in the screw threads. Try sliding the jaws WITHOUT the screws into each slot, then the screws WITHOUT the jaws. Each part should move freely in each slot.? (Report if any or all are jamming).? If any stick, look for burrs and remove if any are found.

?

Best of luck.

As with the previous topic, with the failure of a jaw on a unimat 4 jaw, which also happened to me, I had to lap the new jaws in to get a sliding fit - I don't know what material the Indian made jaws are, but the unimat look to be a monkey metal casting, and if the jaw does "snag" , the screw will tend to snap off that bit which engages with it....
Hope that makes sense....
Best wishes
Richard

Hi Richard
Many thanks?for your email.
I've tried and tried to reverse the jaws with?no success at all. I agree, the quality it based on how good the item is. If it's cheap then the strong chance is that it won't be any good.
I decided to purchase a 65mm 4 jaw with reverse jaws using the threads as indicated by Phill. The only problem (if applicable) is that it's central and not individual.

Kind regards
Rob

I've been stupid now in buying a 65mm 4 jaw chuck for my Unimat SL as its really too big to use.?
The 50mm really can't have the jaws reversed. I've filed over and over but NO fit at all.
Now I'm absolutely stuck.

I’m not sure I understand.? My 4-Jaw is 60mm OD and fits fine on my DB-200.? The jaws slide in the grooves and have a 3mm slot on either side.? There is no reason they shouldn’t fit in either direction.? At least without the screw they should slide easily back and forth.? I just tried it on mine.

?

Now I realize my screws and jaws are slightly different as mine has a groove in the middle of the screw and a protrusion on the jaw sits in that.? But the jaws shouldn’t bind in one direction.

?

Maybe a few more photos?
