Anyone Actively Unimat?

Is anyone actively using their Unimat?
I am interested in learning what other Unimat Owners are using their Unimats for.
As for me, I am using mine to aid in creating high quality hinged wooden jewelry boxes of exotic hardwoods. The hinges are of brass and are hidden. The top of the boxes are hand carved in relief.

I don't actually use mine, sadly. I bought it thinking I would use it to do smaller stuff than my Atlas 10F can handle, then discovered that the motor was gutless. Converted it to a 150W DC scooter motor which improved it no end. The Unimat lives under my bench so takes some time to retrieve and set up so I tend to use the Atlas as it's all set up and ready to go.?

Yes, I use mine all the time, anything small that needs turning gets turned on the unimat- usually brass or aluminium, anything too big for the unimat gets domne on my 13" south bend, its not used every day, but several times a month I have a project I need to turn.

I have no other lathe than the Unimat 3 and I use it for all and sundry odd jobs, not really modelling but touching up, repairing or producing new spare parts for things as different as bicycles, clocks and basically anything mechanical.?
?
BTW - for those of you that don't watch The Repair Shop - featured , professional organ and toy repair expert, using what appears to be a mobile EMCO UNIMAT SL in the workshop, turning wooden parts for the restoration of a wooden toy giraffe

Good morning group,
?
I also use mine practically every day, mainly on parts for longcase clocks.
?
I fitted it with a 550w BLDC motor and stepper motor drive on the long travel and am extremely happy with it.
It's mounted on a board and light enough to store on a shelf if it's in the way.
?
Yesterday's job was making some brass spacer washers for the tumbler gear assembly of my Myford ML10, sort of helping a big brother out I suppose.
?
kindest regards,
?
David

I don't often use my Unimat 3 but when I do it's very useful, last year I repaired my wife's carding machine - required some fairly accurate drilling and the turning of a piece of wood that needed to be an interference fit into an aluminium cylinder. It's the only machine tool I really have access to since I had a spinal stroke 5 years ago.?

I have modified my SL to CNC control. I use it for RC model airplane and boat parts, electronic circuit boards and vintage bicycle parts. Most of that is in the mill configuration. Some of the bike parts are done in the lathe mode. I use it quite often.

Not currently using mine, but Sunday night I was watching a You-Tube video shop tour - made by a gentleman in Florida who has a shop that makes custom motorcycle handlebars.? Sitting there on one of the work benches was what looked suspiciously like our favorite little green lathe.? He explained that it was used to make small parts if they were needed.

I use mine for model railway work, turning wheels, axles, bearings etc. as well as chimneys and domes. I've also made gauges and a rail bender for laying track. Owning a Unimat (I have a 3 and an SL) has transformed the hobby for me, allowing me to do things my own way.

Paul B.?

Paul,
I have not sold any jewelry boxes at this point. The boxes I have made to date have been given to my wife. The tops have been engraved with maple leaves which stand proud on the top.
They are a beautiful form but hard to describe.

The last useful thing I made was the nut for the Lotus ignition switch. Recently I've been making tools for... the Unimat! I've adapted a 2" milling vice with the intent to make a part for my telescope.

Roy,
Where did you buy your CNC kit for your Unimat conversion?
I would like to do something similar for my Unimat DB200.

I have used my U3 for a number of things I turned an alternator mounting pivot bushing for? a Mercedes Airport bus now camper Bus owner got bushing actually 2 pressed together with correct ID? turned down OD to fit mount snugly...correct part was available in 2 weeks? with several trials it fit? still working 10years down the road
Turned several delrin? rods to be spacers and end caps for a 2m VHF Ham band antenna.? Made several for friends in local ham club
Turned multiple pens? in both acrylic and wood using the table saw to cut raw blanks to length, drilled using drill chuck, 4 jaw , collet chuck for drills larger than 8mm/ 5/16"? sanded blanks square to brass tubing in center of blank
Using mill to cut new reverse unit lever slot in a Lionel train boiler
Using a geared DCmotor to drive leadscrew reversible variable speed? powered by model train power pack? not elegant but it works

Its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it ! :)

I'm just getting set up. Not sure what I'll make. Bunch of half formed ideas that I'll have to work out. When I get it all together I'll post some pics.....?
?

I got my U3 with the intention of making small parts for large format cameras and accessories... but so far I've mainly been working on things to 'improve' it (DC motor, collet holder, threading etc.).
?
I have used it to modify a few things though and really enjoy using it.
?
I haven't owned a lathe before and this is the only one I have.? I'm trying hard to resist getting any more !

I have decided to keep my original Unimat DB200 in its original configuration for the time being. As it is the only thing I have modified is the addition of two 150 watt DC motors with speed and forward and reverse controls. This is a huge upgrade from the original motors.
Maybe someday I will upgrade to full CNC but that is not in my plans for now. Most of my carver I spent working with CNC machines so I am very well versed in it.
