¿ªÔÆÌåÓýRemember guys, you need to leave time for the e-mail to be intercepted, translated into Chinese, analysed to see if it has any possible political content and then released back on it¡¯s way! ?It all takes time.Ian from Oz

Oil stain without top coat, shellac or Poly and neither showed up. I have also tried posting photos several times and nothing. ?Jeff

new topic: extended x-axis way bars
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGreetings- I need to extend the x-axis way bars on my alloy Unimat to gain length between the headstock and tailstock to be able to turn 2 piece pans/pencils. Getting the right size (10mm?) drill rod and cutting off 2 lengths present no difficulties. My problem is how to ?drill the countersunk mounting bolt holes at either end so that both holes are at the same ¡°time¡±, say 12 o¡¯clock for example. I worry that using a proper drill press with wooden v-blocks as opposed to precision metal ones aligned to a fence that the holes would not align properly and therefore wouldn¡¯t fit the mounting holes on the basic Unimat frame. I¡¯m sure some of you real machinist out there can give me the advice I need. Many thanks, Bill in NC |
Re: Unimat box finish
Mine is like new and it is just a dull stain with no gloss added.
Wayne From: UNIMAT@... [mailto:UNIMAT@...] Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2019 8:59 PM To: UNIMAT@... Subject: [UNIMAT] Unimat box finish I posted this a few hours ago and it has not shown up yet, so I am reposting it. What was used to finish the unimat wooden box, was it just a oil stain? it does not appear to have a coating on it like Shellac or Poly. Jeff [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Re: Unimat Box finish
Thanks Bill
?That is what I have also. looks like it is just a oil stain. The electrons must be moving slow for Yahoo. I posted this yesterday at 6:59pm their time and it just showed up a short while ago ( 17 hours later). No sign of the 1st post or the last three photos that I posted days ago. ?Jeff |

Re: Unimat Box finish
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI don¡¯t have my original box anymore, at least I don¡¯t remember seeing it during the last move.? But that¡¯s the way I remember mine, it had a dark brown stain with no sealer of any kind. ? Don ? From: UNIMAT@... <UNIMAT@...>

Hello Richard, ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?The problem has gone away for now- I persevered with very light cuts and a final polish with fine emery.? But I am continuing with the making of a traveling steady as there will no doubt be future occasions for it's use! Regards Richard Pender

Could you use 1/8" stainless rod, turning down each end to 2.5mm for threading 7BA? The pivot hole in the diisc enlarged to 1/8" to suit.?? That has the added advantage of a shoulder to help with location (at right angles to the face) and to provide a firm stop for fully tightening the thread into the regulator face. Richard. |

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Thanks, that is food for thought for the current project .In the longer term I am contemplating the construction of a 1/2" scale model of an early GWR broad gauge locomotive - which has slender, tapered, ball ended hand rail pillars along both sides of it's running plates: perhaps I will have access to a decent lathe by then as there is no way a SL could handle the other, functional components for it! |

Hello, ? ? ? ?Yes, indeed 3/32"BSW was "LBSC's" first option but I have his second option 7BA taps & dies for which 2.5mm is the top diameter. The thread at one end certainly needs to be a good fit since the plain part will have to be @90* to the port face.? (Yes I know that threaded items should not be used as locations, but that is the way the old "master" designed it and there is no way in which it could be assembled into the boiler with the rod in already fitted into the regulator body, as a press fit.) ?I am far from the firs to trip-up through following his "words and music" Regards, Richard

Hi Gang: How about 7BA threaded rod ( 316?) with 2.5mm tubing cut to length over it? Carl. On 3/1/2019 8:06 AM,
