Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?
The actual new ER16 nuts are standardized :
?So the ER16 nut has a 22mm x 1.5 pitch, if your chuck has the M22 x 1.5 pitch then yes and the nuts are cheap on Ebay. I have many of the SL1000 lathes and unfortunately the SL lathe chuck uses a different thread. I did order from RC Machines their ER16 and ER20 chucks that fit the SL and then purchased the cheap sets of ER collets on Ebay.? I do have the original SL collet chuck and a full set of the E16 collets down to 1/32" for it also. The E16 collets have a very limited grip range, I think it is only around 1/64" or less. The ER 16 grip range is double, so you only need 1/2 the number of collets to cover the range. The cheap Chinese collets sets work ok, the Techniks brand and the other more expensive ones have a much better finish to them. I plan to slowly replace the cheap ones with the better ones as I find out what sizes I use the most. ?The ER16 collets have double the number of slots cut in them to double the compression range, they also have the groove cut all the way around then for the snap ring in the nut to snap into. All this does is allows the collet to be removed with the nut. The old style E16 sometimes needs to be knocked out with a rod push through the head stock. ?The original E16 collets that Unimat used where Swiss made by the Schaubin company and will cost $30 to $40 plus shipping each on Ebay. I would order a set of the cheap ones and try them. ? ?Jeff |
Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?
The collet chuck in the blog post that I linked to earlier is for my SL. I posted the link to show the difference between the two collet types.? is my U3 collet chuck. Individual Chinese ER16 collets are as cheap as chips on eBay (as little as 1.41GBP), so its worth buying one on its own just to see if it will fit.? ---In UNIMAT@..., <jgpedwards@...> wrote : Paul, That was for the Unimat 3/4 model with the 14Mx1 Spindle thread? -Jeff |
Re: new topic: extended x-axis way bars
Yes Virginia, ¡°metric countersinks¡± do exist! ?Aside from their diameters being expressed millimeters, the specification calls for the included angle to be 90 degrees, not the US screw countersink standard 82 degrees. With little trouble I located a 90 degree countersink (3 flute, 3/8 in. body) for $11.10 at McMaster-Carr which arrived today along with the 12 mm round bars that ordered 2 days ago. It looks like I¡¯m now ready to start making the extended way bars ( with mounting screw heads countersunk on top) that I need.
Thanks all for the useful advice along the way. Bill |
Re: DB/SL Belt Sizes?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJeff, Have you tried to make your own?VERY easy to do, cheap ($1.00/ft) and you can make any size you want to suit your needs. I bought 4 feet of 4mm round textured polyurethane belting about 10 years ago from McMaster Carr and still have more than half left. All you need is a knife and soldering iron. McMaster Carr part number is 8112K32. Roman

Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?
I forgot to add
?You can use a ER collet (grooved) in a E holder. But you can not use a E collet (non grooved ) in a ER holder. The ER holder has the snap ring inside it and it the snaps into the grooves in the ER collet. The E collet does not have the groove and will ruin the snap ring when you tighten the nut down. ?Jeff |
Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?
There's a photo of an E and ER collet side by side on my ?(my apologies if you've already seen it).
As you're looking at a collet chuck for a Unimat 3 you might want to consider an ER25, which has a larger range of collet sizes as you'd expect. Most sets range from 3 to 16mm, but you can get 2mm collets and up to 20mm. Personally I have both ER16 and ER25 for my U3, and will quite often fit the 25 to the headstock and use the 16 in the tailstock, especially when drilling small holes (under 1mm). ?Here is what I have on the SL I have purchased from both here: and here Both are good to deal with and offer a great product. ?I also use white Buna O rings I got from Ebay. Cheap, grip good and if I get in trouble by trying to bit off too much they will slip a bit. I copied this down from someplace long ago. Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?
?Jeff?
?The ER collets are easy to spot from the E. The ER have a groove in them at the widest part that goes all the way around them . On the inside of the nut is a "snap" ring that this groove snaps into. E collets do not have this groove and the E nut do not have the snap ring inside them. The ER collets also have double the amount of slots cut into them and this allows them more of a range. I have only seen once a long time ago a couple of E collets with the "extra" slots in them for increase gripping range, they must have been very late model ones and they did not have the groove in them. ?Look at Unimat collets and ER16 or ER 29 collets on Ebay and you will see the difference in the "groove" ?Jeff |
