Understood !

??????????????????????? It was threading that started me doing all of the modifications. But along the way I have a nice mechanism to control backlash on the lead screw….which was what I wanted to share. Good luck and have fun. The unimat 3 is the smallest of my three lathes but it was the first and still well loved.

I have both the thread cutting gears (150 250) and the lathe threading attachment (150 250) with a 1.0mm follower.
They came with the U3 package when I purchased it but have not had a chance to use either of them.

And found the lathe threading attachment cumbersome/complicated to set up.

The thread cutting gears attachment seems to be a much better option in case I need to cut single point threads.

My present problem is reducing the carrier feed backlash which is why I was interested in Clive's modifications.

Thank you very much for your input.

Re: Dial indicator holder for Unimat SL DB #db200

Please consider making the shaft of the indicator parallel to the bed.? Otherwise the end of a 2" travel indicator might miss the end of the carriage.
Re the use of a tire gauge, a 2" indicator can be bought on Ebay for $32.

Re: Dial indicator holder for Unimat SL DB #db200

Bill's Workbench

Kevin that is neat using a tire tread depth gauge.?After looking at the aluminum one, that might be a great project to start on once I get the Unimat in tip-top shape, I can already envision how I would design and mill it. I watched your Unimat db200 assembly video, thank you, I learned a bit about the order of reassembly. Your rapid drive contraption looks a bit too involved for me :). I was thinking of using an electric screwdriver with an 8mm socket. ?I subscribed to your channel, and can't wait to see what is next.

I updated my design to clamp on to both rods, increased the mass on the angled part, and also included a hole for the lead screw in the middle.?

Thank you, everyone, for the great comments.?

Re: first Pen and thoughts on moving forward

to be perfectly honest i always just fitted a bit of 1/4" bar into the tool holder when i needed a steady rest for hand turning on the unimat.

this is the type of thing I was talking about with ways cloth (tho this one is more cardboard) cut it a little bigger the the ways and mount it on both sides of the carriage to protect them
but the cloth ones are costly so not sure if they are worth the cost

I am also thinking? of removing the lead screw and carriage and putting some kinda tool rest system in front of the lathe if i can figure out how to add it safely

something I forgot is on 1) with what I have is it likely to make the holder with just my unimat? (I know I still need taps of the right sizes)

Welcome to the group Bill's Workbench!

3d printing is great for accessories and such for the unimat and it's awesome that you're sharing your creations
I have a digital indicator from Ebay seller ?and it's working really well for me. I do like the suggestion of spanning both bars to add some rigidity and may have to try making an alternative mount to see if it makes a difference.
I looked at this readout closely for the first time in taking pictures of it and I see that the DRO is a re-purposed? which is an awesome?hack!.

Looking?forward to seeing what you do with your Unimat next. I post some Unimat related stuff on Instagram and YouTube. Check the links in my signature if you're interested.
Cheers and Make On!

Congratulations on your first pen.? Re #2:? If using a Unimat to turn wood, you should cover the ways, and more importantly, the leadscrew that moves the carriage.? You don’t need anything fancy, as an old rag, a sheet of paper, or some aluminum foil will keep off most of the dust.? If you neglect doing this, sawdust can get stuck between the threads of the screw and between the screw and the nut on the carriage.? If it is then left to sit without being cleaned, the mixture of oil on the threads plus the sawdust will harden over time and jam up the mechanism.? After turning wood, it is good practice to use an old toothbrush to clean out the swarf and dust from the threads.

?

so made my first pen on my little unimat, I still need to get vacuum setup, but its a start

?

?

so here is the problems I faced

?

1) the fitting is to tight with this setup, do to the size of things (chuck and the live center) there is no room to place the work pieces on,
the gap that I could get with using the 3-jaw chuck could not even fit the brass nob to get that on

my thought on fixing this is to make the pen mandrill its own little mount thing if my measurements are right I can save about 15mm?
not a ton of space, but with that and taking off the live center I think that gives me the room to put stuff on without removing the tailstock in full

2) the ways got a ton of sawdust and chips on them during this, what are peoples thoughts on ways cover cloths and adding them to the unimat?

3) dont know if people have an idea on this, but with the insert tools about how long does a insert? last? or is it one of those things thats hard to pin down do to quality of inserts?

Hi the normal lead screw is LH. the method that I went for for screw cutting was a chain drive from the chuck drive. That requires a RH thread on the lead screw. Which is very helpful……. It’s easy to now change the lead-screw from metric to imperial to cater for any screw thread. I cut a bunch of different toothed meccano wheels in brass to go on the lead screw end. Link and bend meccano chain to suit and away you go. This was before 3 d printing of plastic gears. I have 4 lead screws two each LH and RH thread metric and imperial so can do almost any thread. ?

Your photos clearly illustrate the issue of the lack of meat in the section of the carriage that holds the lead screw thread.

A question if I may:
Why the two lead screws instead of a reversible DC motor?

Thank you for taking the time to post your photos.
Much appreciated.

Re: Dial indicator holder for Unimat SL DB #db200

Please refer to this photo of my Unimat vertical post which I included in a recent message.? There is an aluminum bracket holding a dial indicator clamped across the two bars of the bed with two wingnut type of screws.? This is the machined bracket that has been made in the past by Ebay Seller "hkoesnadi".? It works very well and is easy to use.? Just slide up and down the bed and clamp where you need it.? With a 2" travel indicator it covers the majority of Unimat projects.? For me, I see no need to reinvent anything.? Now can someone manufacture this with 3D printing and have it as strong as the aluminum?

Re: Dial indicator holder for Unimat SL DB #db200

Bill's Workbench

Carl, maybe that would work if I incorporated the mount in a riser for the headstock. ?Humm, maybe version 2.?

Hi Gang:

What if the mount attached to the motor bracket? Then it wouldn't matter if you moved the quill or the carriage, it would still show the movement between the tool and the work!

My suggestion is to make it clamp across both bars.? At times Ebay seller hkoesnadi has made these from machined aluminum as a cross bed clamp.? If you can make yours strong enough, it should also help dampen bed vibration.

Re: steady rests

It looks like one I bought some years ago. It has one big negative IMHO. The three rods are not threaded into the ring making?fine adjustment?almost?impossible. One of these fine days, I going?to thread the holes?in the ring and replace the three rods with threaded rod.

lathes are used in hobby trains for making logs that fit into the cars, barrels, and even making replacement wheels and axels
I have a ton of train stuff from my grandfather and some of the notes talk about using a little lathe for stuff like that

Hi Gang:

I spotted this Lathe on Ebay:

item #175364629061

While I know this is a toy train group and not generally interested in Machine Shop stuff, did you notice why this might be train related?

Look at the end of the red bed.

If you look harder, you will see the photos are of two totally different lathes??
