Re: M12x1 thread chaser

Yes. This is the set I bought:? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09FL2HRX2 and bits & pieces I've made using them work fine on the spindle & tailstock of my SL. You might try hitting your tailstock with some PB-Blastet or WD-40, and giving it a good brushing with a stainles-steel toothbrush sized wirebrush. They tend to be a bit finer wire than the larger brushes, and clean threads pretty well.?

Re: M12x1 thread chaser

Anyone have any doubt that the spindle and tailstock threads are M12x1.0??

my grinding arbor I got has a rusty thread which I’m trying to clean up.?

chuck, drill chuck, sanding plate all run on fine now, so I assume fault is with the grinding arbor internal thread being rusty.?

Having M12x1.0 tap and die are hand is a god idea for these though.
found a set that trumpets there ability to clean up threads, so we’ll see.

Use a metric thread file.?
Available in 1.0 pitch inside and outside file.?
It uses finger pressure matching and restoring the thread. ?It is a flat file you press into the thread.?

Look at my previous post with McMaster Carr part numbers.?

Grainger, Mactools, etc, don’t seem to have an M12x1.0 thread chaser. They are different from a cutting tap/die.?
a tap or die for thread cutting could destroy the threads m trying to clean up…
Dont know why the M12x1.0 die wouldn’t run onto the Unimat tailstock ram external (drill chuck) thread. It was obviously one sided with some chamfering on one side to allow settling over thread spindle nose but grabbed too much from there to be hand turned and I didn’t want to risk using a die wrench.?

my issue is cutting taps and dies seem to remove too much metal. A thread chaser is a little different in that it repairs minor flaws.
I tried an M12x1.0 die on the tailstock ram spindle thread last night, no joy.. It was clearly the right size but wouldn’t run on readily.

Also, look into thread forming taps. They are designed to form threads by displacing instead of removing metal and might do what you want: .

I don't find corresponding thread forming dies, but mcmaster has an entire external thread repairing category:

And they reminded me of thread repairing files, which might suit your purpose.

I would buy a die and grind out 3 of the flutes with a dremel stone and use to chase with one flute with finger pressure.
also you could grind out 1 of a 2 flute tap or 2 of a 4 flute tap and chase the internal threads with finger pressure.

Also, I have used a regular tap as a chaser for external threads by just pushing the points of a tap flute into the external threads and chase them.

McMaster # 8309A11? metric thread file....0.8mm-3mm pitch threads...external only
McMaster #2542A42??? Metric internal and external thread file....ends might be just small enough to fit M12...

McMaster has other sets and choices for thread files and thread repair.....
They actually have thread repair dies for metric....

good luck

Everyone I know uses taps and dies, and IIRC you're not interested in them.

Re: Was browsing the Aloris Tools website

The problem with the toolpost shown here is that it only holds a tool in one direction.
As mentioned elsewhere, "hkoesnadi" has toolposts currently on Ebay.
Also, if you want something a little bigger, there is the steel Sherline toolpost, currently on sale at $227.

I use these on Sherline lathes, and am very satisfied.? It does not rely on a central lever, but a capscrew to fasten a toolholder in each direction.

Re: Quick Change Tool Post and Buddy Bar

Rather than item number, please search by Seller -- hkoesnadi.
If you want one of these, don't fart around.? He only makes these and sells peridically.

Hello Herman,

The line drawing shows the EMCO (original) QCTP designed for the Unimat 3 - here's a photo

I don't believe the QCTP photo you provided to be a Unimat 3 issued item. There are many small QCTPs that are small enough to fit the Unimats.
