Re: Machining 3d prints
I've heard that through every step of my broader "maker" journey, someone always insists that you "need" a better (more expensive) tool than the one you have.?
Thank you for those links, I might get that printing this week.? I really like the idea of it. If you're unhappy with that tap holder/extension that is always a good excuse to make exactly what you want later haha |
Re: Machining 3d prints
Thanks Rick. Overall I have been very pleased with my Anycubic printers. I have a Kobra and Kobra Neo. I have had others comment that I should get ¡®better¡¯ printers. IMO, these are perfect for what I need. The quality is there if the operator does his part.?
This is the ¡®tapping Arm¡¯ I picked. It was chosen because it is simple and strong. I¡¯m stealing the ¡®head¡¯ of it for my multi purpose machine project.? this is the tap handle I got. I wish the extension was removable, but it will probably be put into the holder and left there anyway.? |
Re: Machining 3d prints
Don, I didn¡¯t radius the edges, but will do that, thanks for the tip.?
The PLA+ seems greasy and not prone to sticking together.? This thing is done for now so I guess I will see if it is good for anything. As suggested, an angle adjustment would be nice, but IMO not necessary. I have an adjustable protractor at the machine all the time, so I think that will be adequate.? Today I installed the brass inserts. Related to that I am building a ¡®universal machine¡¯ that will handle setting inserts, serve as a tapping guide, be a small light duty drill press and possibly a light duty bearing press. I¡¯m remixing some models I found and designing the accessories for the various functions.? In that vein, I finished my tapping guide today. It also needed inserts so the two projects came together.? Here is the ¡®compound¡¯ and the tapping guide. I made the gib from a bit of a broken plastic box, the material seems to be polyethylene. The functions work well.? I did install screws from the bottom side (countersunk) to reinforce the dovetails.? And here are a couple of pics of the thing sitting on the unimat for scale and to visualize how it may work. I am working on a version with quick change mounts too.? |

Hello All; New member, long time Unimat 3 user. I recently inherited my boss's old Unimat 3 and accessories, which lead me down the rabbit hole here.? He had quite the set up, many of the add-on accessories, and I've added a few of the parts he was missing or were lost in his mess after he passed. I just today uploaded an article from the defunct American model railroad magazine "Mainline Modeler", which shows how to add dial indicators to a Unimat 3.? It's not my work, but worth a read as it is another way to improve the U3. FWIW, I started using this Unimat 3 in 1984 after I joined the guy's company, American Model Builders, and he'd bought the Unimat circa 1982.? We were a professional model building shop specializing in architectural and piping models located in St. Louis, Missouri; and we did a ton of work for Monsanto, McDonnell-Douglas (and later Boeing after the merger) and all manner of smaller firms.? In recent years the firm was primarily making laser cut model railroad structure kits (under the LaserKit trade name), and they just closed after 41 years - even though the owner died almost two years ago. I used the U3 mainly for delicate turnings used in making brass master patterns for white metal spin casting; smokejacks, fire hydrants, wheels and flywheels of all sizes, etc.? The machine actually hadn't been used in almost 20 years when I got it, but being a Unimat, it's still in great shape - just bought some new belts and it fired right up. He had the 3-way cross slide, indexing attachment, grinding wheel, steady rest, milling post/table/etc.; and I've added a second drill chuck and some quick change levers.? We couldn't find the little vise he had, so I sourced one off eBay and bought it.? Total investment by me to date has been about $175.? Jeff Saxton |

Nevadablue,
Sketchup has a free viewer, however it will not let you disassemble the model. They also have a free web app that will do that but has limited capabilities. I personally use an older, free version, Sketchup 7, if you can find it. It also supports the Phlatboyz SketchUcam extension. This calculates tool pathes from Sketchup models. I use this for most of my mill work using my 3D conversion Unimat SL. You can do amazing milling jobs on the Unimat. |

That sounds interesting. Is there a way to see the file without sketchup??

Re: unimat 3d model project
I really want to 3d print, learn to mold and cast in brass... that is the other goal... that I've been working toward... bought small kiln and small vacuum chamber too...
Right now, must finish the 1/12th scale brass bed project - remember the game Pick Up sticks... I feel like that is what I'm doing with for the last month.? I've successfully ignored my bench this evening though... the project will continue to live in it partially assembled state. Tamra |
