Re: Mr. Pete just started a series on the Unimat SL/DB on YouTube

Tubal Cain is a reference to a Bible character. Multiple persons have used that pseudonym.?

I don't think Mr. Pete wrote any books, unless it was something recent, to leverage his youtube channel.

Mr.Pete's You Tube Videos say Tubal Cain.

I found some books by Tubal Cain tonite at Amazon.
But me, being me and curious, I googled Tubal Cain and found the reference again to the 1st Blacksmith.??
There is even a tapestry with a black smith and that caught me eye as a needleworker.

Do you think Mr. Pete wrote these books under a pseudonym?? ?I am sure there are a lot of blacksmiths in the larger world, but the coincidence makes me more curious...?

Search Author Tubal Cain at Amazon... for multiple book titles.? I bought Model Engineers Workshop Manual published in the UK tonite.??

I think Mr Pete has explained this on one of his (many thousands of ) videos, there was another Author who went under that name from the UK, who wrote the books.

Re: Convertidor

The same supplier on Ebay offers them in steel, which I would prefer, but neither incudes the registers which are necessary for assured concentricity.

Re: Convertidor

"I would like to know if someone in the group can make me a 12x1 mm female to 14x1 mm male converter with emco unimat threads, thank you"

This is awkward to do because the difference between the major diameter of the M12 thread and the minor diameter of the M14 thread is only about 0.5 mm. An adaptor that moves the chuck out about 10 mm would be possible but would have to be made carefully to ensure that the 12.00 mm diameter register is concentric with the 14.00 mm one. I would do this on my old SL if I still had it, although it really needs a good strong steel which would not be easy to machine on a little Unimat. I'd like to start with a bit of EN24T bar (817M40/1.6582/34CrNiMo6) as it is tough but machinable.

I did a chuck conversion some years ago for someone in the Shetlands who wanted to convert a four jaw independent chuck from M14 to M12. He posted it to me and I put it up on my brother's large lathe. I bored out the back and tapped it M18 × 1 and glued in a? mild steel plug with epoxy resin. I only used M18 × 1 as I had a bit of bar with that thread on it and a tap for the same thread. I then bored it out for M12 × 1 and tapped it, and reamed out the 12.00 mm diameter recess. I then put it on my SL and checked concentricity - it was better than 0.001" runout on the diameter, and similar on the back face. There was no noticeable vibration at maximum speed, with the U90 motor. Good enough for a four jaw chuck, and much better than one which doesn't fit.

My SL is now in Australia, but I have plans to machine up some Morse taper arbors to fit the bigger lathe, one with the 12 mm DB/SL spindle nose on it, and another with the 14 mm U3/Basic/PC nose. I was also considering making one with an 8° taper so it could be used to true up bad ER collet holders - I have a few.

Re: Mr. Pete just started a series on the Unimat SL/DB on YouTube

He is a hoot. Did you see his ‘lathe cleaning’ video??

Take the lathe in hand, turn it upside down and shake it. LOL, a real character.?

Excellent teacher.?

Re: Convertidor

My question is specifically which Ebay Seller provided these adapters that do not wobble.
Now maybe everything is made in one Chinese factory.? But I would not want to be the person who buys this, it wobbles, and then I find that I did not get it from the same Seller.

Re: Convertidor

Good evening,

I have tried several of the type of adaptors mentioned earlier but struggled with the manufacturing accuracy of them, they wobbled.
The extra length also caused problems.?

I stumbled on the item below by accident on EBAY, sorry I don't know how to post a link.
It's a 10mm long tube of brass with M14X1.0 on the outside and M12X1.0 on the inside.
They are very reasonably priced at around ?6 GBP for 5 units.

5pcs M14 to M12 Sleeve Reducing Nut 10mm Long Hollow Tube Adapter Brass Coupler

I use them on my SL to mount a U3 3-jaw chuck and also a collet chuck without any problems.

Regards,
David

Sorry just saw your 2 messages
Get ready to do some sanding

Re: Machining 3d prints

I found the model.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Mike, I sure wish I had that a few years ago. If you have a link for it, I may print it for my son. I gave him my full size machines. That jig could come in handy for him someday.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Nice job.
Here is my end mill sharpener jig esun pla+ . I got it from Thingieverse a lot of sanding to fit it together?

Re: Machining 3d prints

I've heard that through every step of my broader "maker" journey, someone always insists that you "need" a better (more expensive) tool than the one you have.?

Thank you for those links, I might get that printing this week.? I really like the idea of it.

If you're unhappy with that tap holder/extension that is always a good excuse to make exactly what you want later haha

Re: Machining 3d prints

Thanks Rick. Overall I have been very pleased with my Anycubic printers. I have a Kobra and Kobra Neo. I have had others comment that I should get ‘better’ printers. IMO, these are perfect for what I need. The quality is there if the operator does his part.?

This is the ‘tapping Arm’ I picked. It was chosen because it is simple and strong. I’m stealing the ‘head’ of it for my multi purpose machine project.?

this is the tap handle I got. I wish the extension was removable, but it will probably be put into the holder and left there anyway.?
