Re: Feed Transmission For Mini Lathe ?

I know there is at least one seller of the C0 in Australia.

They sell complete set ups but I can check the availability & price of the feed if you want.

You may find our exchange rate better for you too.

Brian.

The answer is: one more than you already have, unless you find a great deal on another one!??

This question comes up from time to time in relation to oscilloscopes on the Tektronix group. I'm not even sure how many I have (about 70), but I'll still grab a free one, or a great deal on one I know I can sell.

Posted on Craigslist.

This is a BRAND NEW open box benchtop VINTAGE mini lathe UNIMAT SL1000 made in Austria 1970. This machine has never been used and did not come out of its original factory box from 1970. Please ask any question before bid. Please interested buyers only.

UNIMAT mini lathe - $500 - Detroit Metro, Oakland co.

UNIMAT lathe, built in Austria in the 50s. Found in basement, plugged it in, appears to run great. No case or accessories (other than those shown here).
Needs belts (they're inexpensive O rings available at Grainger.com)
It's a legitimately high-quality old-school lathe. I'd keep it just because it's very cool but it really should get some use.
Perfect size for jeweler/metalsmith or serious hobbyist.

Re: Feed Transmission For Mini Lathe ?

I am fortunate to have the power feed accessory. Many years ago my dad was given a complete Unimat DB200 with all the bells and whistles. Well, my dad gave me that lathe because he considered it a toy and didn’t feel the little machine could do any meaningful work. I am glad I have it. It has every accessory that was made for it. Anyway, the the power feed is sure a nice thing to have. Maybe some day I will find the time to draw up the plans for it and post it in the files section of this group for those that would be interested. I used to do a lot of this sort of thing in CADKEY 2D. I am quite rusty after not doing this for years now. I was given a student?copy of Key Creator at no charge for my own?use but am having a slow time getting into it. Getting old is beginning to show itself in my case. I should probably devote a little time to it everyday.

Re: Feed Transmission For Mini Lathe ?

Hi Andrei, Thanks for the kind offer. Ive had a look at both the Parts List and the Manual and unfortunately there's no reference to the Auto Feed Accessory. I have been searching for as much info on this item all evening and apart from one available in Europe at an extortionate price all I've managed to come up with is some photos. However I might be able to reverse engineer one up myself from these. A fun little project maybe. I will need to keep digging as i cant cut gears currently? and might struggle with the pitch of the worm-screw so that's another 2 pieces i might need to buy. That with the 'drive belt' might mean it would be more efficient to buy the whole unit but I am reluctant to pay the price for all that it is and does ! Thanks for your help. I will continue too look for any one with this unit that can perhaps sketch up a drawing with some of the important dimensions for me. Cheers.

There are a few others in the same size. in case I picked the wrong one, look around and find the one that looks like yours. Then you can find the manual, the parts list, etc. all on the right hand of the product page.?

I am not sure if they ship to England, but if they don't, I would be more than happy to receive your box and forward it to your address. I can't tell how much shipping will be, it depends on weight and size of box.?

Best of luck,

Hi Andrei, I'm here in the UK so can you link me to the correct site for grizzly. I seem to get side tracked with google searches. Brown bears etc. Grizzly seems like they have a lot of products. Also to the wider Group, as I'm in the UK the Little Machine Shop is of no use to me. The import duties alone make the item unaffordable. I expect the US $ is also strong compared to the UK ? as ?50 or more for the Auto Feed Gearbox is way overpriced in my opinion at least so I'm leaning towards building my own as a side project for the winter. Will try to source some scrap in due course. I have a welder so that helps with some fabrication, and the shafts will be no problem ofc but its the gears that pose the problem, When the,? ahem 'drive belt' is being sold for ?6 plus postage here in the UK. COMPLETE RIP OFF. I might just have to source a pack of o-rings to do the job.

Re: Dumb question dept. - and what about the Unimat grub screw

While we’re on the subject of grub screws in the Unimats - what’s with the ball bearing under the (?) cup screw, pressing on the cross slide gib on the U3? ?Seems like an odd arrangement…

And just what is the proper way to adjust this and the gib on the U3 cross slide?

You're looking for M6 DIN 417 grub screws for the front of the tailstock and for the headstock.
Normal dog points won't work!

Thanks for the fascinating discussion. If I may, what would be the advice for the grub screws that are found on the Unimats? Which form should these have? So far, I believe mine (for drilling head and tail stock) to be flat with some 3 mm of thread removed.

Thanks in advance?

Yes the typical smaller screws are cold formed. The end of the screw shows what happens when a formed thread is not supported. Those smaller screws are squished between 2 plates with slanted grooves. That is what forms the threads. When the cylindrical shank is squished some of the material deforms out of the end of the screws. If the screw has a squished looking end it was cold formed. If it is perfectly flat with a chamfer then it is machined out of bar stock. Usually over 1” are machined.?

Under a 1/4” are made on high speed machines, 1/4-7/8” are on larger former machines and 1” and over are usually machined. That is why pricing changes quite drastically around those sizes.?

If you look carefully, many bolts are not actually flat on the end.? At times I have had to machine the end of a screw flat to not have marring.

Thanks for that! I will check the various grub screws and correct where necessary.?

Hi, Herman.

On the tailstock, the one by the quill is a dog point. It rides inside a channel and acts as a stop or a limiting screw. The one by the handle is a cone point, as it is used to firmly lock the bearing in place. (In the manual the bearing is called a "guide pin".) It stabs down into the bearing to freeze it in place within the casting.

Forgot to mention, but grizzly has good manuals, parts diagrams, and they carry full parts stock. Try them, as well.

Hey Guys, I'm hoping some of you bright people will be able to help. I'm looking for a Feed Transmission for a Sieg C0 Mini Lathe. Ive seen photos of them before and they appear really simple, driven by a small rubber belt connected to a shaft with a radius groove for a pulley. The problem I face is the housing is cast and I could perhaps weld up something else it would be a bit of a faf and the other is that i cant index gears.
