Re: DB/SL bed bars to centre dimensions

Since it is a steady you don't need super precise dimensions except for the bar spacing, which is 40 mm. From memory the spindle is offset 10 mm towards the front - I'm sure of that. I don't have a note of the spindle height, but if you put something flat across the bars and measure the height to the point of a dead centre (or any bit of bar machined to a point) you can get a ruler measurement and do the sums: 6 mm + thickness of flat + ruler measurement. That should be accurate enough.
?
Somewhere I have a drawing showing the positions, but I can't find it right now. I think I measured the height sing the method above, but put a known diameter rod in the chuck and measured with a digital caliper, then did the sums.
?
My SL is now in Australia, so I can't check the measurements, but I'm sure of the 40 mm bar centres and the 10 mm offset. I must sort through my DB/SL drawings and get them in some sort of order, weed out the duplicates, and put them in the Files.

DB/SL bed bars to centre dimensions

I'm being a bit lazy but doing an accurate measurement seems like a bit of a pain...
?
Does anyone have the dimensions (or a drawing) showing how the bed bar position relates to the lathe spindle (or tailstock!) centre line please?
?
I've been looking through the files section and found the bar diameter and spacing but not how the bars are positioned with respect to the centre.
?
I'm looking at modifying a Taig steady BTW and want to draw up the modifications that I will need to make?
?
Thanks in advance.
?

Re: English translation of U3 book, and looking for two other Emco publications

Thanks Bruno!

The Laidlaw-Dickson book is already available in English,?ISBN?9780852425916:?
In fact, it's the bibliography?from that book that has me looking for these two other titles (nobody has yet said they have a copy of either):
? "Emco Unimat Basic Course Instruction Manual"
? "Emco Programmed Exercises"

That second one by Wingrove is perhaps my favorite Unimat book! It's the closest to a course I've found. I can work on scanning it to upload.

Cheers,

Joel

Being myself used to work in a multilingual environment, I never cared whether books would be in English, French, German, Italian or even Arabic for that matter, all version would be fine with me. So I never Carrefour to have an English version. However, I still would like to think that there is one.
So just in case anyone would happen to have that English version, please feel encouraged to scan and share.

I have ¡°The book about the UNIMT2 by Laidlaw-Dickson. It was published by the German Alba-Verlag in 1979 under ISBN: 3-87094-424-2.
The book has 105 pages. Scanning it is very time-consuming.

Pinol feed gear

The Pinol drive on my Unimat MK 4 had caries. It was already missing several tooth segments. There are a few suppliers online who still sell such parts, but the freight costs were too high.?

I ordered 1 pinion with 10 teeth from E-Bay. I needed a total of 2 sprockets for a Pinol drive. These are 10 mm long without hub and grub screw. The rest of the material was still available in the stock.

The shaft was turned in the collet chuck. The pinions were drilled out to ?5 mm and reamed. All parts were joined together with Loctite High Strength and the two gear wheels were aligned with the teeth. ?After the adhesive had hardened, the transitions between the two gears were smoothed with a very fine needle file.

Just send me an email.
That is all there is to it.

Just FYI.? You should see a "Reply to Sender" choice at the bottom of the message.? That makes it private.

Also, if you go to the Groups.io site to the message and click "Reply", for the TO box you have the choice of:

English translation of U3 book, and looking for two other Emco publications

I ran the German version of that U3 book through Google Translate, and uploaded the English version to the Files section (might not be perfect, but it's pretty good). Thanks again to Herman for scanning it! It has some great info:
?
Given how useful that was, I'll press my luck and ask if anyone has two other educational Emco publications:
? "Emco Unimat Basic Course Instruction Manual" or
? "Emco Programmed Exercises"
?
These are listed in the bibliography of DJ Laidlaww-Dickson's "The Book of the Unimat." Foreign language versions welcome! And I can help get it scanned if you need assistance.
?
Cheers,
?
