Looks good! Is that an LED lamp in the 3rd photo? If so, where did you get it. I might need a few of those.?

I've done similar for my U3, unlike yours mine is set to length as it was made for a specific job.

For the travel stop on the cross-slide I just use rod magnets to limit travel and set the tool accordingly. A 9mm split shaft collar makes a great stop for the long axis.?

In reference to your spindle ram action, what machine are you using? Is it a Unimat?

Spindle ram action

I'm working on a batch of hardware for the xacto-ish knives I make and I adjusted the geometry a little to be able to use the spindle ram axis to cut the 2mm x 18mm shoulders. This is working far better than I expected it to and the polished carbide insert tooling is giving me the best surfaces to date. So much faster than turning the little knobs!?

Re: Reciprocating wood carver

With a price like that I would think twice about buying one. I have all the hand carving chisels I would ever need. If I need a special I can just make my own and harden and hone the edge. Done that many times as a tool and die guy.

Re: Small Compact Depth DRO

I think the ordinary cheap digital tyre depth gauge is as accurate as many of the cheaper calipers. There are some with a 50 mm range. I was considering using one on the SL headstock, maybe on the tailstock too, but the one I got was adapted for a different job that meant the tip was filed to a custom size, so we could measure the depth of an awkward groove. At less then ?10 each, why not? With the SL gone I am now thinking about the U3, so no headstock movement there. The tyre gauges might be useable on the little Proxxon mill, cheap enough to try anyway.
?
The biggest problem with the cheap digital calipers and scales I have found is short battery life - assuming you can find a decent battery - I've had some where they forgot to put the electrons in. When I put mine away I take the battery out and put it back in the wrong way up. Then it doesn't lose charge and you can find it when you need it. Generally I use Mitutoyos which last a year or two on one cell, but I was given those. I also still use my nice Verniers for many simple measuring jobs. They are particularly better for inside measurements.
?
Anyway now I know I can get 50 mm travel tyre gauges I shall get some and see what I can use them for.
