Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
I have a discount offer from an eBay seller for a mill/drill attachment I put a watch on just to see what it would go for. It's different from others listed and I don't know if it's different item with the wrong name, or simply missing components the seller may be unaware of. The price just dropped to $200 USD from Pounds with $44 USD shipping. Appreciate the education.

开云体育Hi Gang: At a hydro electric dam they use wedges of Lignum Vitae for the main shaft bearings. As it slowly wears they just push the wedges farther in. It was cool, the shaft only turns about 12 RPM and water is the lubrication. Carl. On 12/15/2024 1:26 AM, Peter Brooks via

Re: Internal groove?
If you find a job shop to do it, regardless as to whether you can manage to find out how they did it, please report back.? On Sun, Dec 15, 2024 at 2:06?AM Peter Brooks via <peter=[email protected]> wrote:

Excellent! ?Good to hear you can get an equivalent over there ‘across the pond’. It’s even green!
?
I don’t use oil on my U3 (not on the bed anyway), and as the original keep plates were a plastic material, an oil-impregnated nylon seemed like a good idea.
?
The ‘lifting’, or play, issue in the carriage on the bed is a subtle one but very annoying.
?
I have no desire to file away at the carriage, so using thicker material, lightly rebated then shimmed gives me the option to try out solutions in a non-destructive way. |
Re: Emco Unimat 3 Keep Plate Material?
Yes, Lignum Vitae was used for propeller shaft bearings in ships, quite remarkable I think.
?
Policeman’s truncheons and bowling balls (lawn bowls) attract attention at auctions as they are sometimes made of Lignum Vitae. I guess the wood turners like a challenge!

Re: Internal groove?
You can machine a groove of any shape inside a tube using an 1850s method that works quite well.? Get an oak or ash rod or broom stick that is more than 2x the length of the tube. Machine the wood dowel to a slip fit inside the tube. Mount the part on the cross slide rigidly and the rod into a chuck and center on the headstock. Midway in the rod cross drill 2 holes in line about 2 or 3 inches apart.? File them square for small HSS square bits. Then run a slightly oversized fine thread bottoming tap from the back about half way thru it.? Grind two short bits with top rake and side and front clearance angles. Position one bit facing each end and a fine grub screw behind it.? Set up the part and rod on a lathe. Adjust one cutter sticking out a bit. Run the carriage down the rod to the end peeling a bit of metal out. Then adjust the second bit out a little. Run it back down in the other direction.? Rinse and repeat until it’s deep enough. Slow but effective. You can make the rod out of steel if desired. If you rotate the rod you can use this setup ?for line boring instead of broaching.? Steve ? Re: Emco Unimat 3 Keep Plate Material?
Nylatron is moly disulfide impregnated nylon. It’s very good engineering plastic, tough and slick.? Delrin af is delrin impregnated with Teflon if I am not mistaken. UHMW ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is quite tough and very slick.? McMaster Carr has quite a selection of all these plastics. UHMW is also available as thin stick on strips that can be used backed by metal. It is used on tables saw tools and is cheap.? 开云体育Although I don’t like his lost foam method here’s one way to get your own shaper. ? ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Charles Kinzer
Sent: December 14, 2024 9:43 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Unimat] Internal groove? ? Yes.? Shapers were once pretty common.? The production drawback was the time wasted on the back stroke which, of course, does no cutting.? They are designed (usually a straight mechanical design but a hydraulic scheme came later) so the backstroke is faster than the cut stroke to help at least a little bit. ? Since this group has a small machine focus, there have even been hobbyist sized shapers, notably by Adept in England (almost made a small lathe popular with hobbyists), that are hand powered.? You can see that here: ? ? A planer (for metal, not like a wood planer) is another machine some may not be aware of.? It is a cousin to the shaper, but typically larger, much larger, where the tool bit is stationary, and a long table holding the work piece moves to and fro. ? Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer ? ? ? Re: Tapmatic 70x Reversible Tapping Attachment #10-5/8 Capacity up for auction on shopgoodwill.com.
开云体育Hi Gang: I think this tapper takes rubber flex collets. I don't see any included, but I'm sure you could make substitute collets. Even with
shipping, not a bad price, if the bid doesn't go too high. Carl. On 12/14/2024 12:35 PM, Richard Burrows

What size of "oilon" is used?? Has anyone here used this before, and where do you buy in the US?? The cheapest that I found on Ebay is $105 for 12"x12"x.250.
