Re: Cast Iron for Unimat Base
I have? some aluminium tool plate discs 12" diameter, I got them on ebay when I needed a 12" pulley, the seller was a local company to me that made roulette? tables, when I went to collect my 10 12" discs? 1 1/2" thick, I couldn't help but notice the 24" discs in their scrap bin. The aluminium tool plate has been machined flat from the factory, as evidenced by the machining marks on the surface. So if I were in need of a flat surface to mount my unimat, that would be the route I would choose, mine is currently mounted on a section of worktop, which is plenty? flat enough for my usage. Peter? Is there a specific reason?? I know I won't ship to Italy and Spain; I've had too many packages that vanish once they get to the local postal service. -Dave

Re: Countersinking brass
Peter, did you get it to work?? I just used a countersink myself, but on plywood and was in the stage of wonder of this simple invention.? I even took a picture with my phone to remind me how to do this on plywood.??
Drilling 260 brass is agreeable.? ? I might have been swearing during the project that some of the brass I had from K & S did not seem like it was 260 brass as it machined quite differently, when I initially started turning brass balls with Taig's radius turner.?? I was drilling 5/32" balls to accept a .072 diameter brass rod and this drill bit 'finally' worked. I did try to re-sharpen my drill bits to a nice point and nothing was working... My brain remembers that I need zero degree rake for maching brass, but I could not accomplish this in a 49 gauge drill bit.? I just reordered more drill bits;? being frustrated and purchasing 2 at a time, to xx for shipping... The latest order that I purchased was visibly without magnification very inconsistent at the tip of the tool bit and that point was very helpful in controlling the drill bit from wobbling, when drilling 5/32" brass balls. I thought the TIN coating worked best for my application, initially I bought 3 to test what worked. I finally created a jig to hold the 5/32" balls and drilled them on my unimat, set up as mill. The blasted 5/32" balls needed 4 holes, 2 sets of holes that a perpendicular to the other 2 holes... it sounded easy, but I am finally close to that goal of making a brass bed.? I hope to have it finished soon, just working on jig to assemble all the little pieces in a perpendicular manner.? Who wants a wonky brass bed?? Not me! It is hot & humid for the next 10 days so I don't know if this is going to get done with this weather. Tamra |

Model Engineering show October 12 - 13, 2024 in Auburn, IN
Dennis L, the man I got my surface plate from said that there is a new show in Indiana...
I think it is year #2.?? I found this post - perhaps some of the people who previously exhibited in the NAME show in Michigan will attend this event. The show in Michigan usually conflicted with the International Miniature Show in Chicago in April, and then I think C-19 had a major effect on the NAME show...so I'm hopeful that I can attend this one, it is a much easier drive.? ? In addition the latest VAT rules mean that suppliers outside the UK (not just in the EU) must open an account with HMRC in the UK and charge UK VAT on sales into the UK, and then pay this to HMRC. Some suppliers have just said: Do WHAT? You must be kidding!! And as a UK resident I don't blame them. And non-magnetic. Which could be either a feature or a bug, depending on why you want to use a griddle. For me, I think a place to stick a magnetic indicator holder would be a very strong draw. If you're wanting it to stiffen the Unimat a bit and add handles, the aluminum griddle might be a better choice. Be lighter, too.? :) if you're trying to turn a Unimat into a Monarch... So many conflicting desires. ;) Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.? SEMPER GUMBY! Re: ER32 Collet on Unimat
That's got some stick-out on it, but I don't believe it's much worse than the ER25 chuck I built. Looks like it was dialed in very well, too. Mine hasn't been tested yet. Re: tooling website found
I gave this site a quick look.? It is similar in flavor to Little Machine Shop in the U.S. in that it has lower cost Chinese small machines and accessories.? Some accessories might be from India, don't know.? However, they seem to not have any mini-mills.? The closest I could find was a small combo lathe-mill that seems identical to the Grizzly B0937 (6x10 Combo).? For lathes, they show C0 ("Baby"), C1 ("Micro") and SC2 ("Mini") lathes.? I believe they are all rebranded Sieg lathes and those are Sieg model numbers.? The 6x10 combo is a Sieg M1 "Multipurpose Machine" in Sieg's parlance. Probably a good source for home hobbyists and amateur machinists in Europe.? I don't see much reason to buy from them if you are in the U.S. unless they have something you can't find anywhere else.? But it seems they have generic low-end machines and accessories sold by others like Little Machine Shop in the U.S. and ArcEuroTrade in the UK.?? Their model of the early Mercedes Benz looked interesting. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer
