Re: refurbishing a Unimat?
Reading on the subject I did several years ago suggested that zinc pest is caused by adding lead to the pot metal to make it flow easier, and then exposure to humidity. Not a metallurgist, so can't swear it's accurate. And should not find that problem in objects made for true ZAMAK alloys.? Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Saw a Unimat in the wild - used for model shipbuilding
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
After the comment that the group seemed to have gotten quiet, decided to pass this along.
I was recently at the Maritime Museum in Oxnard, CA and they had a display of about a dozen ships made by one craftsman, Edward Marple, including his workbench.? It has the ship he was building when he passed away.? Notice the Unimat pointed at with my not
very subtle arrow.? It has the jointer attachment.? The motorized contraption at the front right of the desk is an old dental drill.? He assembled with planks and wood dowels like the real thing.? They said up to 8.000 wood dowels in one of his models.
Closer photos of the Unimat:
And just a few of his many ship models they had on display.

And in that pedantic vein, there are several different alloys called zamak with different proportions of allowing materials in them. Sitting on the shelf just out of reach are three ingots of ZAMAK 3. A quick search says that's the most commonly used alloy, though ZA2 is supposed to be harder and stronger. The ingots seem to be quite a bit heavier than my SL. But 4% aluminum is common to all the ZAMAK alloys. Though there are a bunch of zinc-aluminum alloys that aren't ZAMAC. It's another rabbit hole! Re: refurbishing a Unimat?
?I have cast parts in Zamak before. The best source that I found were electrical cabinet flanges for rigid conduit. A mold made from plaster of Paris that has been baked to to moisture is all that is needed. I found chrome "tree with three stainless cups in it that was intended for condiments. It was the perfect height for my propane torch. Broke up the scrap Zamak, melted, a ols sall spoon with holes drill in to skim off the dross. A few large thick steel washers on the top of the plastic mold to hold it down and pour away. Be sure to drill some vent holes along with the pour hole. I used PAM spray cooking oil as a mold release. Pour 1/2 of the plaster into a container, spray PAM on part, push 1/2 way down. let dry, spray PAM again on top of Plaster, and pour top 1/2 of plaster. Separate drill pour and vent holes, simple. ?Jeff
