开云体育My? Sherline lathe works with metric collets as long as I use the metric sized collet sleeve, but the Sherline collets will not thread onto my Boley drawbar.? The threads are a bit larger in diameter than the metric ones. Charles Daldry On 5/2/23 12:55, Ruben wrote:

Yes to your last question, anyway. :) 1mm pitch is 25.4tpi. I'd have to dig out a copy of Machinery's Handbook or other reference to calculate it.? Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Wouldn't a .275-40 thread be more like a metric M7-0.6 thread?? It's my understanding that while Imperial threads are listed listed as threads per inch, metric threads give the diameter and the pitch distance between threads.? An M7-1.0 thread's Imperial equivalent would have 25.4 threads per inch wouldn't it?

Re: Unimat watchmakers drawbar
Hi all, My Unimat WW drawbar measures, from threaded female end to the shoulder, 4.448"/113mm. Cheers, James

WW collets are .275-40 threads. In metric that would be M7-1.0. That is the same for WW and Moseley collets.? Be careful because ebay sells what they call WW and they are Conoid. That is a swooping radius instead of a chamfer on the outside. The WW works on a conoid spindle but a conoid does not work on a WW spindle. I have conoid collets and they do not work on my Sherline. I can measure my sherline drawbar.? Pretty sure its too short. The Sherline collets alone are a good value. On Tue, May 2, 2023 at 2:55?PM Ruben <groen.drenthe@...> wrote: Collets are on the way. |

Re: Unimat watchmakers drawbar
Above is an Ebay link to a $40 drawbar for a Levin lathe with 84mm draw bar length.? You would need a collet to figure out if the length can work for you. Also Sherline has a set of drawbar and collets for like $110.? I have this set for my Sherline.? It is nice quality ww collets. If I were further along in my project I could be more helpful.? But my schedule.......its complicated. On Tue, May 2, 2023 at 8:52?AM Ruben <groen.drenthe@...> wrote: I have the watchmakers spindle here without drawbar. |
Re: Unimat watchmakers drawbar
With the spindle and a collet or two, you should be able to make your own drawings...? ?This link has a good photo of a watchmaker's collet:?? Says the thread is M7 x 0.75mm and you'd need to figure out how long the threaded section is, diameter of the collet at various locations along it's length, and the taper angle... Also the length of the spindle,? It's gonna be fiddley work, but doable. If you have a collet of your own to compare, you can get those numbers from your collet, no matter what diameter stock it's made for. Here's an example from AliExpress:??to look at. It's a hollow tube with internal threads at the business end. Yours wouldn't have to be an exact copy of that one. A couple of WW drawbars on ebay here:??I searched with Unimat as the first term, but didn't get anything specific to the Unimat. M7 x 0.75 taps and dies on ebay:?? just in case... And here is a spindle with drawbar on ebay.ca, with photos you can download to help you figure it out!? If nothing else, figuring it out will keep you busy and out of the bars for at least a few days! ;) I didn't save the link, but I saw a set of 20 8mm watchmaker's collets for under $20 on Banggood or AliExpress. Not betting they're any good, but they could be... Give it a shot! You have nothing to lose, and could learn something from trying, even if you fail more than once! Bill in OKC William R. Re: Unimat watchmakers drawbar
The links above are for stainless steel tubing and a tap for WW collets.? Copy and paste. The taps are unusual and do appear on ebay regularly.? Be careful when buying the taps (and dies). They appear under the correct size heading .275-40 but in the description say different things like 4-40 or 1/4-20 etc.? This is how some import companies get around being able to send you the wrong thing. Just fyi. The tubing may be able to be tapped as is, but I have not taken the time yet to get into it. The stainless tube may need to be slightly drilled or bored or reamed to not work the tap too hard. The collets engage a lot of thread and even 50% engagement should work fine. I was lucky enough to have purchased a used db200 that was reamed out to just over 5/16" so that tubing slips through perfect. I am turning a brass nose for my regular spindle to accommodate my WW and Moseley conoid collets. I plan to make a draw bar and turn an aluminum or brass knob for the end and superglue in place (or loctite green) Hope this helps. Re: Projects Built on the Unimat?
One of the most useful parts for me to use on my SL are a set of fittings for a collet chuck with M12 x 1 fitting to hold small screws to shorten them and make dome headed screws for my clock repair work.
I first made a split collet with a 15 deg taper each end to hold 3mm rod, I then went onto a 3 piece with a mid and nose section that I can change size to suit bolt head and bore from 2mm through to 6mm poke the screw through then tighten the nut to hold, also a set of mid sections threaded out to screw the bolt into so as not to damage threads whilst I am doming the heads and slitting, I am currently making a set of collet mid and ends to hold 1mm and less screws. For the tail stock end I am drawing up to make a sliding tap and die holder for the 2mm and less. I am having as much fun making these parts as I am doing the clockwork. Phill? |
Re: Projects Built on the Unimat?
Just built this Collet Chuck for a friend after i cleaned up his rusty dusty U3.
All done on the Unimat 3 except the M14x1 Tap and?my Thread cutting setup and top?slide from my lathe. I purchased the Collet Nut and Collet to fit his slotcar armatures. Runout is less than 0.01mm or 4/10000" I'm happy. |
