Re: Tailstock chuck

Carl and Dick,

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my post.

When working on old longcase clocks I sometimes find myself trying to fit a 150mm long shaft into the lathe for attention.
They can be anywhere from 1 to 7mm in diameter and have various step changes in diameter, plus a gear cog at one end and a larger gear wheel at the other.
They don't always fit back through the chuck, so it can be difficult to provide enough support for them.
I would like to be able to mount the tailstock end in a free-turning Jacobs chuck to give more stability and options.

kindest regards,

David

Good morning,

Has anyone come across a revolving tailstock chuck adaptor suitable for the SL, to which I could fit the standard drill chuck?

I've come across many larger ones in the past with an MT fitting but cannot seem to locate one with the M12x1 fitting.

kindest regards,

David?
David,
Just curious what you want to use a revolving tail stock chuck? Are you wanting a powered tail stock spindle or just a free turning chuck?

Re: Tailstock chuck

Hi David:

I have a MT2 turret for my 13" lathe and have never used it. I just haven't had a job that would justify the set up time. If I do I think I would use dedicated tool holders and not Jacob's chucks. Even scaled down a turret would take up most of Unimat's 15cm between centers. Perhaps using 1/4" hex bits would be fast enough??

Good luck, Carl.

Re: Sewing Machine Motor w/foot pedal?

Keith,
I now have received my power supply you recommended as well as the motor speed control. I think I will buy or build an enclosure box large enough to fit all components inside. I am thinking of making the enclosure from polycarbonate sheet stock and solvent welding together or fastening together with socket head cap screws. (with this method it could be disassembled if necessary for modification if needed).

Yes, it was Tom's. Email him, sometimes he has things for sale that are not listed.

Actually the way bars are supposed to extend from the tailstock end.
They were part of the wood turning kit and were meant to extend the working length of the bed by allowing you to install the tailstock outside the end of the lathe bed.
They are part # DB230-1.

Re: Alternative motor for the Unimat SL

For the extended bed, Tom's Tool Store does or at least used to have cut ends of Unimat beds....He sold the headstock end for mounting the milling column mid bed giving better x axis motion for milling and drilling.? The tailstock end was to extend the bed particularly for wood turning.? I had an idea of cutting two beds? remove the head from one and the tail from the other? way bars to be precision 12mm shafting? instead of drill rod so as to increase bed length allowing CNC ops without giving up distance between centers for pen turning.

Hi Richard,
Your name sounds familiar to me. Did you ever work in the plastic molding industry?
If so, we may have crossed paths somewhere in the past.

Hi Sean and welcome.

I'm also in Sunnyvale (101 and Mathilda).? Having two larger lathes, my unimat doesn't get much use, but I'm close by if you need help.
