Milling Using the Unimat

I use my Unimat almost exclusively for milling and do very little turning with it although I still have my DB200 with all attachments. I also have a Micro Mark 7¡±x 16¡± mini lathe as
main machine tool and use my Unimat as an accessory for the minilathe to make it an all around versatile machine tool. That is why I have begun the project to replace the original U90 motor with a 150 watt scooter motor with electronic speed control. With this array of equipment I can take on any project within the size range of my equipment.

YouTube Unimat video

Alistair Riddoch (YouTube ) has started a Unimat restoration project. I've found his other videos both entertaining and informative so it will be interesting to see where he goes with this project.

Unimat DB200 assembly

Juan's share motivated me to upload a recent assembly video after cleaning Unimat #2. Still need to swap in a scooter motor on this one. Recent enclosure conversation has got me thinking of making a lathe/mill combo...?

Posted today; 21 minutes long. Very well done.

I posted some of Mert's photos years ago. He was having problems accessing the forum and sent the picture to me. I posted them in Photos as Mert's Mods.

You can see his cast iron base, buried amongst some typical workshop clutter along with other mods he was discussing at the time.

Glad to hear he's doing OK. I always liked his straightforward approach to solving problems, and his occasional response when people needed some sort of tooling - "You've got a lathe, so make it"

Re: Building an Encloser Box

I talked to him mostly on the various 7x mini-lathe forums, since I don't actually own a Unimat, but please tell your dad we miss him, too!

Bill in OKC?

Hi,?

I, for one, miss his wry pearls of wisdom. I am glad that he has settled in well, he diserves a slower pace now.?

May I echo the previous comments and wish him well.?

Stay safe,?

Re: Mark 1 & Mark 2 details

I went to lathes.co.uk and viewed the 1954 catalog.? The tailstock in the catalog photos looks the same as the one that I have.
The catalog also shows a clamping screw on the carriage, but different than the carriage clamp on the one that I have.

Maybe you were remembering Mert's custom cast iron base with integral column mount. He said this was the first pattern he ever attempted and it all happened forty years ago when he lived near a small foundry. It did not have enough height to enclose anything underneath, IIRC.There was quite a bit of discussion at the time (maybe five or six years ago?) about the design of such a base and somebody modeled it and was going to get some made. Somebody else mentioned that the Lodge stovetop griddle was about the right size to use for this.

Hi--
Mert's daughter here. Dad's doing fine in his new apartment, but he's no longer online and not doing anything with his unimat.

Dad was living in Barre MA, when he got that base made, and the foundry is still in operation.

Hoping that helps!

However the carriage has straight in horizontal rear locking screw, which is provided for with a boss in the casting.? Lathes.co.uk indicates that the Mark 1 did not have a lock on the carriage.? The clamping method is different than what is shown for a Mark 2.

Tailstock looks like Mark 2, on my Mark1 is no locking screw

Re: Building an Encloser Box

The CAD design I referred to is by Roman and is in the Files under "cast iron base".

I did just that for my "big lathe" and it has worked well. Getting the bottom drawer higher than the bed of the lathe helped a lot.

I may build a 8¡±-12¡±riser on my work table behind my DB-200. On it I could place my 18¡± wide oak felt lined Gerstner tool chest that holds all my Unimat accessories. I think this could look nice and tidy if well done and easy to access everything.
