Re: Threading Attachment?
I have one made for the job. It uses simple gearing to get metric pitches down to 0.5 mm. It would need substantial modification to get finer pitches or inch threading in tpi. It works using a crank handle on the spindle, rather than being motor driven.
The gears for the Basic lathe use 17 tooth gears to get close enough to inch pitches, but not many of them. If you have definite pitch requirements check that you can get them with whatever gearing you choose. There are clever ways to get inch pitches on metric lead screws and vice versa, and more obscure things like Mod and DP pitches, without using large gears like 127 tooth. The U3 uses 1 Mod gears which are easy enough to get. The Basic uses 0.75 Mod, which are quite difficult to find. Keith |

Re: Threading Attachment?
I have seen plans for making a geared threading setup for the U3 from scratch and also plans for adapting a Sherline threading setup to the Unimat 3.? I just looked at the Unimat 3 files from the Unimat 3 group on groups io and found the Sherline to Unimat 3 conversion.? I have not taken the time yet to seek out the build it yourself threading set.? The only thing I remember about it was you cut your own gears and they were quite large, probably module 1.? Happy machining!

Download files in one go
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI can¡¯t say as I never tried to do that. I¡¯d bet one or more members can definitively answer your question though. There are a lot of images so i suspect the full set would be quite large to download.Cheers, Bill William K. Re: DRO
Thanks.? I agree that a hole in a column works.? Please note however: the vertical indicator arrangement that I made uses no holes or modifications to the Unimat.? The indicator holder is on a sliding shaft collar, so that you can move it up and down to match the head position. The bar across the motor mount uses tiny clamps, but no holes. At one time, "hkoesnadi", made a Unimat dial indicator holder that clamped across the bed with 2 wingnuts.? I can use a simple 2" travel dial indicator along the bed.? Digital long indicators seem expensive.?? The method of using a simple long digital stick gives the most range.? However, I have a hard time coming up with an easy mounting arrangement and no "slop". |

Hi Couldn't you rig up a counter-weight system to lift the head. It would be cheap, easy to make, easy to adjust and sensitive as you want. Regards Ken Murray-Taylor
