Re: ER Collets

RC Machine has M14 x 1.0 Collet holders? stuff. Buy the holder from them ad then get the collets off Ebay.

Re: ER Collets

Based on the discussion that I have seen, I can conclude that the only sources for a M14x1 collet chuck are someone like "GG" in Germany, and no one here knows of any US source.

Re: ER Collets

?I recently had to make a threaded adapter for a 1967 Honda Carburetor cable. Threaded 8mm OD x threaded 6mm ID in aluminum. The ER16 chuck with a 8mm collet worked great. I used a section of rod about 1 1/4" long, trued it up, used a die to cut the OD threads, center drill, drilled to proper size and then used a tap to tap the ID threads, cut off to length and it fit perfectly.?

Re: ER Collets

One thing to bear in mind is that the capacity through the headstock is a little over 6 mm, and ER16 goes up to 10 mm, so why go for anything bigger? The holders already suggested should be OK. You will lose accuracy if you have to machine the holder yourself - get one that fits as supplied. If you are looking at shipping from Europe also look at GGtools. They offer ER16 holders specifically for the DB/SL, but they don't always have them in stock. I assume they make them in small batches. At the moment they have them for the U3, but I don't see any for the DB/SL:

Re: ER Collets

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I got a clone ER-16 collet chuck and nut, and a clone Imperial collet set in various sizes from 1/8¡± to 3/8¡± for my SL.? I don¡¯t remember the sources, other than the fact that I found them on Ebay, but not at the same place.

?

Other than having to remove the first few mm of 12x1 threads in the chuck to clear the shoulder on the spindle, the chuck has worked fine for what I¡¯m doing with it as a hobbyist.? I know that you get the accuracy you pay for, but I also know that I only pay for the accuracy I really need.

Off Topic...Taig question

Has anyone on here worked with one of the Taig mini mills? Can you give me any insight into how robust and capable they are for working with small chunks of 4130/4140 type steels? Accuracy? Are any of the CNC packages worth investing in on these mills? I think I need a retired hobby business to keep me out of trouble and am thinking about going in on after market sights for several .22s and a couple of the milsurp rifles.

If you could send me any comments or observations about the Taig (or others that might fill the bill) by private email it would be much appreciated.

Regards, SSK

Thanks for that, I will not be troubling you again. It is the P & P and taxes that cripple any deals over that distance.?

Good luck?with the sale.

Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?

I found this on the Practical machinist web site:
"Hi,
This may help to make your choice.
About the E-collets and their pro's and con's:
1. SCHAUBLIN originally developed E collets , and later the more accurate ES collets , available sizes 8 - 40mm (E8 - E40)
+ great grip, double angle clamping, average collapse room, great concentricity and quality
- problematic extracting (stuck tooling), pricing(IMO)
2. REGO-FIX improved the E collets by adding an extracting groove to the collet, the nut had an asymmetric rim that grabs in only a part the groove when loosening and thus making axtraction easy, the ER system was pattented, available sizes 8 - 50mm (ER8 - ER50)
+ great grip, double angle clamping , easy extracting, huge collapse room, great concentricity and superior quality
- pricing(IMO)
3. SCHAUBLIN addopted the improvement of REGO-FIX and applied them to their ESX collets, available sizes 11 - 40mm (ESX11 - ESX40)
+ great grip, double angle clamping , easy extracting, huge collapse room, great concentricity and superior quality
- pricing(IMO)
4. E and ES and ESX and ER colletholders of the same size are equal in clamping dimensions BUT:
= ER and ESX collets favour ESX/ER clamping nuts but can use E/ES clamping nuts(no rim) without damage
= E and ES collets NEED E/ES clamping nuts and CAN NOT be used in conjunction with ESX/ER clamping nuts(with rim) because the E/ES collet will be destroyed by the ESX/ER clamping nut's extracting rim and the ESX/ER clamping nut will be damaged beyond repair?
= "20" collets can only be used in "20" colletholders, you cann't use an ER16 collet in a ER20 colletholder

The collets and colletholders that came with early EMCO machines were SCHAUBLIN E25 collets and holders and later EMCO machines had SCHAUBLIN ESX25 collets and ESX25 holders. (Although even a real REGO-FIX ER16-UP(Ultra Precision) M14x1 threaded colletholder for the little EMCO Unimat 3 was an option then.)?
ESX collets are basicly equal to ER collets, they are both very high quality.
Tremendous Grip (ERICSON) collets have an advantage of gripping power by using e less steep angle in it's single angle clamping collet but compared to E/ES and ESX/ER collets the collapse room is less though so you may be forced to buy the "intermediates" when the standard collets don't cover the desired diameters of your cutters. Clamping concentricity is more critical than that of ESX/ER collets due to the single angle clamping design.?
You might also consider the use of OZ (ORTLIEB) collets and holders, they look like TG in their construction and they are equally sturdy. Well known are those of KELCH and of course ORTLIEB.
As for "solid gripping" : it's beyound doubt that SCHAUBLIN and REGO-FIX make some highly accurate and pretty strong holders to take their collets, you can rely on that. The secret may be the steel the're made of and the grinding finish (see picture:

of REGO-FIX ER32 on 25mm shank shaft) of both collets and colletholders of these brands. Equally good are products of DIEBOLD, FAHRION a.o. and almost as highly priced as the formerly mentioned I'm afraid.?
As for RUN-OUT I believe it's best to take the biggest collet and colletholder set of a good make that can take your tool, that will minimize the tolerances when using smaller tooling so your run-out will be minimized as well.
Advice (from REGO-FIX): Don't use WELDON shaft tooling on any of these, concentricity is always compromised by the WELDON-"gap" because the pressure is not equally spread over the clamping surface.
Regards,
Max"

Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?

Hey Cary/Group

My collet chuck has the backing plate, and the squared off, not taper closing nut.
Almost certainly it's an ES-16 type. Found a single early Unimat collet, and it closed completely on that. So that's pretty much confirmation.
Fortunately I have an M14x1 Er25 collet chuck as well.... larger range of collets.
Jeff

Re: Unimat 3 Collet chuck, ER-16?

Hi Jeff,

One possible way to ID you collet chuck is if it has a back plate like the old ones for the SL/DB Unimats then it is probably a E-16/ES-16 holder. If it is one piece and screws directly onto the U3 spindle it is probably for the ER-16/ESX-16 collets. Another visual is to look in to the nut and see if there is a eccentric protrusion near the opening. If it is there the holder is for ER/ESX-16 collets.
