Re: Saw a Unimat in the wild - used for model shipbuilding
That is a neat display, it is very common to see completed models displayed, not so much the how it was done. The mini Shopsmith aspect of the Unimat is one of the most interesting aspects to me.

The article quoted talks of problems in the 1950s, but they have reappeared more recently. I bought some small fans to use around my desk on hot days. One of them stopped working - the other one is

I have one or two large ingots of ZA12. I¡¯m not sure if I want to use it to cast the 4th axis harmonic drive or save it for the Gingery Shaper. Sent: May 24, 2024 9:44 PM To: [email protected]

Reading on the subject I did several years ago suggested that zinc pest is caused by adding lead to the pot metal to make it flow easier, and then exposure to humidity. Not a metallurgist, so can't

Re: refurbishing a Unimat?
My father had a diesel engine model from the early 50's that incorporated the motors in the trucks (bogies?).? ?I found the engine in the mid 70's, but by then the "pest" had done its' work.? The

Saw a Unimat in the wild - used for model shipbuilding
After the comment that the group seemed to have gotten quiet, decided to pass this along. I was recently at the Maritime Museum in Oxnard, CA and they had a display of about a dozen ships made by one

Mine under the chipped paint appears to be a zinc alloy. I have ZA12 ingots I bought for making the Gingery Shaper since Zinc behaves more like cast iron than aluminum for damping vibrations. In case

Right Bill, I think many if not most DB200s were alloy. It¡¯s the MK1 and Mk2 versions I have which all are cast iron. Alan Alan Ehrlich Geneva, Switzerland Sent: Friday, May 24, 2024 5:20 PM To:

And in that pedantic vein, there are several different alloys called zamak with different proportions of allowing materials in them. Sitting on the shelf just out of reach are three ingots of ZAMAK 3.

Re: refurbishing a Unimat?
Dick, I have a Unimat here that says it's a DB 200, but is light alloy just like my SL-1000. Both machines were used when I got them, so may be Frankenmats rather that as shipped. I've not made any
