Re: Was browsing the Aloris Tools website
Following industry trends, Hardinge left the world of 'manual' metalworking machines long ago. The cost of a new L18 undoubtedly reflects the cost of producing a single item (or short run) from archived drawings. It has been reported that the last production run of Hardinge HLV-H 'super precision' lathes were priced at $80,000 each. |

Please fill us in with the details of how you prepped your SL? I recently discovered that WD40 is a very effective way of removing the factory paint, so my hammered green finish is all soft and gooey in places. That crackle finish looks sharp, and with shiny steel parts even more so! That's going to be my future finish for sure! Re: Projects Built on the Unimat?
Hi Tom,
Yes, shapers are not seen or used much these days. My Dad had a small Alas several years ago. He used it to build a log splitter then he sold it. I understand why he sold it. It was too small a machine for his project. I set up and used a large shaper in Trade school and the project was machining a set of 1-1/2¡± parallels. Dick

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWow, just looked up the Hardinge L18. If you ever find yourself thinking that Unimats/accessories are expensive, checkout this L18, base only! Must be made of unobtainium! (from Hardinge web site)

Re: Projects Built on the Unimat?
Some projects do seem to die out.? I started a wood strip ocean kayak about 2005; it's about 90% done, but I haven't touched it since about 2009 or earlier.? Some day, maybe... -Dave

Funny story about your dad - but we all have a bit of that in us, grand visions/ideas, sometimes too grand, and then they sit for someone else to finish. I'm trying to reverse that trend and going full tilt trying to learn as much as I can and making things by hand (and buy as much tooling as I need to do that). And - finishing things that I have started. I'm currently in the process of building a micro shop, with the Unimat as the Queen overseer. A mix of old school tools and newfangled stuff, CNC, 3D printers, air brush paint booth, etc.? I hope that when I croak that all this stuff goes to the person who can appreciate it!

Crackle/wrinkle/crinkle black Unimat paint
My Unimats are Black and all the accessoires are a different tint green. Because I don't like the green color(s) and it didn't match the lathe color, I repainted them. To me it looks ways beter now. I used this spray paint for it. ? |

Re: Projects Built on the Unimat?
Hello, Paul!
Your website is very informative and interesting. The wheel profile cutters are what I had pictured and are similar to screw machine form tools. My dad was interested in model railroading and hade begun to build a brass locomotive. He machined the wheels but never completed the rest of the project. It was always that way with him. The brass loco just sat there unfinished.
