Re: Recommendations for learning the basics

If you're an accomplished machinist, that is absolutely true, but for a true beginner, there are other things that you need to know first that aren't in the Unimat manual. Same applies to the Harbor Freight 7x10 that was my first owned lathe. I struggled for a few years. 2008-2015, in fact, before finding out that I'd lost the necessary sense of touch to get accurate readings from a dial caliper or micrometer. You need a consistent grip and pressure on the measuring instruments to get accurate readings from them, and if I ever had it, I'd lost in in the 35 or so years between my high school machine shop course and getting that HF lathe. Had that problem early in my "bookwork" portion of the 2nd class, and spent a few hours with a micrometer and calipers measuring gage blocks. Now, as long as I don't get in a rush, I can get accurate measurements. I bought a set of the 36 piece round gage blocks so when/if that happens again, I have what I need to practice up again. Though I admit to the temptation to buy a set of good grade A blocks. ;)?

This is similar to the set I bought:??Though I paid about $35 for mine.?

This is the set I want, but couldn't possibly justify even to myself:??Though it's very similar to the Fowler set I was using at school, and which I'd happily settle for! ;)

Brad, read the manual. All you need is there. Then and only then watch videos. Beginning with videos is like starting in the middle of a page. Get a good foundation.
